Sophomores Become Amateur Novelists

By J.J. Dugan, English Department

There’s afoot at HHS, but don’t worry, it’s all in your imagination. Twelve-year-old Jason Dorrant has had some bad experiences with authority and he might be planning revenge – or is he? Over forty HHS sophomores decided to ditch the “traditional” essay ap- proach, and chose to write their own conclusion to the cliffhanger novel The Rag and Bone Shop by Robert Cormier. Each of these brave sophs wrote an additional chapter to the novel, incorporating narration, dialogue, and a technique Cormier fea- tures throughout: the private thoughts of many of the characters (set off in italics). I wonder how my article will be received? Will I get the respect an English teacher deserves? If not, maybe I had better plan my own revenge… See how that works? Good thing your thoughts don’t show up on the page in italics, or we might all be in trouble. Many of the creative responses featured some quite creepy variations on the revenge theme, but you will have to visit Room 135 in a week or so if you want to see them. You might want to read the novel first, though, since the “endings” won’t make much sense without the context of reading Cormier’s book (some English II students can explain why I underlined this word). Cormier is an award-winning novelist, and author of The Chocolate War and other famed Young Adult Fiction clas- sics. Often his protagonists are young people in the midst of crisis, and Jason Dorrant is no exception: he has been accused of a brutal murder and faces interrogation by an expert in winning confessions. The English II sophomores worked hard in developing their story lines, using details from the novel to make their “alternate endings” come alive. Choosing a non-traditional path to examine a novel called on all of their creative energies, and the results were explosive. No – there aren’t any real explosions, but some of these students’ ideas scared me a little. I had better be nicer to them for the rest of the year …
