The city will fly its flags at half-staff Monday and asks all residents to observe a minute of silence at 12 p.m. EST. “Congressman John Lewis was a giant among men, and it’s on his shoulders and those of other freedom fighters we stand as a nation and a city. Never wavering from a crystal- clear vision of a time when all men and women could stand shoulder-to-shoulder in equality, he stood with a generation who helped shape a nation where that dream could become reality. Like his partners – including Jesse Jackson, Andrew Young the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., and others – he suffered mentally and physically for what he believed. Yet, he refused to be deterred. A long-time champion and resident of the City of South Fulton and Fulton County, Mr. Lewis stood among those who ensured we as a city had the necessary foundation of guidance and resources to begin our journey. That spirit of resilience, community and political involvement aligns with the values on which South Fulton was founded. We now stand as the state’s fifth-largest city, largely because of people like him. Today, we commit ourselves to continuing his work, not only as we serve our city’s more than 100,000 residents, but as we carry on his vision of compassion, love and equality. Thank you, John Lewis, for a job very well done.” .
