From CBGB to the World: A Downtown Diaspora Featured Session (Music Culture & Stories) - Was it the sizzle or the steak—the fashions or the music, the images or the sounds — that made a tiny dive bar’s influence expand and persist in such an outsized way, even today? Was the abrupt shift in rock music styles in the late seventies and early eighties merely an idea whose time had come? Or was it, instead, individual, unique creative efforts — by members of the likes of Television, Talking Heads, Patti Smith, and the Ramones — that made all the difference? Featuring: Chris Frantz, Julia Gorton, Richard Lloyd, Chris Stamey, and Tina Weymouth. Lena Dunham with Samantha Barry (Entertainment Influencers) - Lena Dunham is an actor, writer, director, producer, and philanthropist. • Beyond Westworld
“We Don’t Know Exactly How They Work”: Making Sense of Technophobia in 1973 Westworld, Futureworld, and Beyond Westworld Stefano Bigliardi Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane - Morocco Abstract This article scrutinizes Michael Crichton’s movie Westworld (1973), its sequel Futureworld (1976), and the spin-off series Beyond Westworld (1980), as well as the critical literature that deals with them. I examine whether Crichton’s movie, its sequel, and the 1980s series contain and convey a consistent technophobic message according to the definition of “technophobia” advanced in Daniel Dinello’s 2005 monograph. I advance a proposal to develop further the concept of technophobia in order to offer a more satisfactory and unified interpretation of the narratives at stake. I connect technophobia and what I call de-theologized, epistemic hubris: the conclusion is that fearing technology is philosophically meaningful if one realizes that the limitations of technology are the consequence of its creation and usage on behalf of epistemically limited humanity (or artificial minds). Keywords: Westworld, Futureworld, Beyond Westworld, Michael Crichton, androids, technology, technophobia, Daniel Dinello, hubris. 1. Introduction The 2016 and 2018 HBO series Westworld by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy has spawned renewed interest in the 1973 movie with the same title by Michael Crichton (1942-2008), its 1976 sequel Futureworld by Richard T. Heffron (1930-2007), and the short-lived 1980 MGM TV series Beyond Westworld. The movies and the series deal with androids used for recreational purposes and raise questions about technology and its risks. I aim at an as-yet unattempted comparative analysis taking the narratives at stake as technophobic tales: each one conveys a feeling of threat and fear related to technological beings and environments.

  • Prim and Poofy
Prim and poofy Craig Courtice, Alison Broverman and Jodie Katz, National Post Published: Friday, November 30, 2007 Filmmaking is a collaborative art, so why isn't film reviewing? Each week in this space, experts, artists and paying movie customers come together to take apart a recent release. It's salty. It's full of hot air. It's the Popcorn Panel. THIS WEEK'S PANEL - Craig Courtice, a short filmmaker who isn't very tall - Alison Broverman, freelance writer and occasional playwright - Jodie Katz, whose own wedding gown was inspired by Belle from Beauty and the Beast. Check her out at www.thesocialbutterfly.ca. THIS WEEK'S FILM ENCHANTED Craig Ah princesses, the scourge of feminists everywhere. These lasses seem content to go through life searching for nothing but a prince. Enchanted certainly winks at all the princess films of yore, but despite its meta-fictional packaging, it's still gooey Disney on the inside. Alison Gooey is right. I've never been much into princesses -- my feminist friends and I often sit around ranting about how bad Disney's princess marketing tactics are for women; princesses are boring and passive, and they never do anything! Surely little girls should be taught to aspire to more than just wearing pretty dresses? I was hoping Enchanted would be a satirical, subversive romp. It wasn't, although it had some clever moments; I loved the New York vermin cleaning up the apartment and the queen's crony questioning his sense of self while watching a soap opera. Also, is there anyone more adorable in the world than Amy Adams? Her character should be cloying and irritating, but she's just so damn charming that she kind of makes the entire film work.

  • Eric Johnson Producer of Recode Decode with Kara Swisher Vox Media
FIRESIDE Q&A How podcasting can take social media storytelling ‘to infinity and beyond’ Eric Johnson Producer of Recode Decode with Kara Swisher Vox Media Rebecca Reed Host Off the Assembly Line Podcast 1. Let’s start out by introducing yourself—and telling us about your favorite podcast episode or interview. What made it great? Eric Johnson: My name is Eric Johnson and I'm the producer of Recode Decode with Kara Swisher, which is part of the Vox Media Podcast Network. My favorite episode of the show is the interview Kara conducted with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg — an in-depth, probing discussion about how the company was doing after the Cambridge Analytica scandal and the extent of its power. In particular, I really liked the way Kara pressed Zuckerberg to explain how he felt about the possibility that his company's software was enabling genocide in Myanmar; his inability to respond emotionally to the tragedy was revealing, and because this was a podcast and not a TV interview she was able to patiently keep asking the question, rather than moving on to the next topic. Rebecca Reed: My name is Rebecca Reed and I’m an Education Consultant and Host of the Off the Assembly Line podcast. Off the Assembly Line is your weekly dose of possibility-sparking conversation with the educators and entrepreneurs bringing the future to education. My favorite episode was an interview with Julia Freeland Fisher, author of Who You Know. We talked about the power of student social capital, and the little known role it plays in the so-called “achievement gap” (or disparity in test scores from one school/district to the next).
