In that fight Baker, who used to be one of the most punishing wallopers among the welters landed only one light left jab on .Jimmy, and Jimmy slaughtered him with five rapid smashes to the head that dropped Sammy for a nine-second count, and finished him with four more as soon as he got up. This brings McLarnin into the limelight again – and this time as a welterweight. It also brings him into public notice as Jackie Fields Nemesis. When McLarnin fights Fields for the welter championship, as he surely will, It will be more than an ordinary fight. It will be a fight in which the champion meets a man who once knocked him out, almost spoiling a meteoric career. 2 Ladies Followed Jimmy. Little Jimmy McLarnin began fighting as a professional, after a year or so of amateur scraps, about a year before Fields became a professional. -

A PageRank algorithm was utilized to rank the boxers from the network to determine a list of the top 10 fighters from 1897 to 2019. Two data sets were utilized, a truncated subset and a larger data set, to explore the impact of network size on the rank of boxers. Additionally, the researchers systematically varied the damping factor of the PageRank algorithm to determine the effects on the rankings. A discussion of the results includes a comparison of journalistic rankings and those from a points-based system from the respected boxing website BoxRec. -
Tuscon Alchemy
eryl David Rosofsky, a.k.a. Barney Ross, never fought in Tucson, BArizona. Most of his gritty contests, tournaments of toughness, took place in Chicago with occasional sojourns to New York or up and down the West Coast. Desert locales were off Barney’s circuit. That didn’t keep a flame of passion for this Windy City hard charger from igniting in Tucson resident Mike Mayersohn. Mike’s a New York City native, from the borough of Manhattan, having moved to this Southwestern address in the mid-seventies, via a tempo- rary Toronto dogleg. (Tucson I found out has as few natives as San Fran- cisco.) He’s a teaching professor at the College of Pharmacy, University of Arizona and shares an alma mater with Harold Letterman. Barney Ross is his feel good medicine. Over lunch at the Café Poca Cosa, Mr. Mayersohn’s generous treat, Mike explained to me his interest in Mr. Ross. Mike is, and Barney was, Jewish. At the time he turned pro, 1929, fighting in the prize ring, to kosher culture, was con- sidered “a shame and a disgrace”. In Yiddish, a shandeh un a charpeh. Some- thing to hide from Mama. Beryl Rosof- sky took the name Barney Ross to aid in his deception. Mike said Ross’s family misgivings lasted until fame and fortune, in those early Depression years, changed their outlook from lead into gold. Familial pride shined through in a tough Jew in an anti-Semitic time. Ross went on to win three World Cham- pionships; lightweight, junior welter- weight and welterweight. -
