  • Central European Triathletes Dominate Double Iron Ultratriathlon – Analysis of Participation and Performance 1985–2011
Open Access Journal of Sports Medicine Dovepress open access to scientific and medical research Open Access Full Text Article Original RESEARCH Central European triathletes dominate Double Iron ultratriathlon – analysis of participation and performance 1985–2011 Katrin Sigg1 Background: A recent study showed that European triathletes performed faster in Double Iron Beat Knechtle1,2 ultratriathlons than North American athletes. The present study analyzed triathletes participating Christoph Alexander Rüst1 in Double Iron ultratriathlons to determine the origin of the fastest Double Iron ultratriathletes, Patrizia Knechtle2 focusing on European countries. • Chew's View 2004 RAAM Writings
CHEW’S 2004 RAAM PICKS 6/12/09 6:11 PM DANNY CHEW’S 2004 RAAM PREVIEW & PICKS 98 riders in all categories make the 2004 RAAM the biggest starting field ever. The largest solo field was 39 in 1988, but only 14 of them finished. Today, a larger % of riders finish because in 2000 the old 48 hours behind the winner rule was replaced with a new flat time limit of 12 days, 2 hours for official finisher status. Solo: Twelve of the 20 men on the solo-starting roster are American. Thirteen are solo rookies, and three are former winners. Only four finishers from last year are back. Russ Godwin and Tracy McKay are making the bold transition from 2-person team to solo. I am very happy to see two former Chew Crew members: Bob Rich (2000) and James Rosar (1998) on the starting line. Unfortunately, no women are entered. In 2001, Cassie Lowe was the last woman to finish; she finished just behind me. The San Diego, CA to Atlantic City, NJ course is basically the same as last year, but with that nightmarish traffic section around York, PA eliminated. Three time champion and six time finisher Wolfgang Fasching is going for an unprecedented men’s fourth win (Kish is also eligible for this). I am the only person to beat Fasching twice, and both times the desert heat was a huge factor, though he did beat me in a hot 1997 RAAM. His last two wins (2000 & 2002) were relatively easy as the cool start in the Northwest and more climbing allowed him to open up huge time margins, which he held to the end.

  • The World's Toughest Endurance Bicycle Race
_____________________________________________________________ The World’s Toughest Endurance Bicycle Race Boulder, CO - The Race Across America (RAAM) and the Race Across the West (RAW) are pleased to make the following announcements regarding their ultra-endurance coast-to-coast bicycle races are both beginning June 17, 2009 in Oceanside, California. RAAM is pleased to welcome back the only person to ever win 4 Solo Male RAAM Championships, Jure Robic of Slovenia. Robic’s dominance will be challenged this year by several international racers; one time RAAM Champion, Daniel Wyss of Switzerland; Gerhard Gulewicz of Austria who survived a spectacular crash in RAAM 08; Marko Baloh, one of the world’s greatest ultra-endurance cyclists who also is a Slovenian national; Navy Seal David Goggins; Julian Sanz Garcia who rode a strong race in 2008; and an Austrian rookie who shows all the promise of becoming a future RAAM Champion - 26 year old Christoph Strasser. In a world of orchestrated events that attempt to manipulate the impression of something spectacular, RAAM delivers the real deal. For 28 years, RAAM has been producing champions from everyday people and the trials and tribulations they endure never fails to intrigue, motivate and inspire all those that cross their path. Regardless of whether they witness firsthand a RAAM team and its’ entourage of support vehicles racing through their town or by following the progress on the race's official website, www.raceacrossamerica.org, RAAM creates an energy of its own. While maintaining an extremely competitive perspective, many racers find the desire and ability to utilize RAAM as a forum to raise awareness and funds for the charities and causes that they support.

  • Danny Chew's 2005 Solo Raam Preview & Picks
DANNY CHEW’S 2005 SOLO RAAM PREVIEW & PICKS 6/12/09 6:31 PM DANNY CHEW’S 2005 SOLO RAAM PREVIEW & PICKS Slovenian Juré Robic and Mike Trevino are racing to break Pete Penseyres’ 19-year old average speed record of 15.40 mph. In only his second RAAM, Robic won last year averaging 14.66 mph. Although this is the eighth fastest solo transcontinental crossing, Robic will need very favorable weather (tailwinds) conditions. He has the racing speed; he is the UMCA 24-hour non-drafting record holder, covering 522 miles last September. Read about it at: http://www.ultracycling.com/records/24hour_record2004.html Last years Rookie-of-the-Year and 2nd place finisher Trevino also has SPEED; last month he set a new Across Iowa record riding 273 miles at a sizzling 25.7 mph. Read about it at: http://www.ultracycling.com/records/iowa_record2005.html Despite false cheating allegations against him last year, he still set the 3rd fastest RAAM rookie speed of 13.88mph. An ultra runner turned cyclist, Trevino entered RAAM at the last minute this year. Although Trevino is hungrier for his first win, I still give the edge to Robic because of his brutal 48 hour sleep deprivation training. Also, Robic beat Trevino by 11 hours last year so I wonder how much faster Robic could have ridden the final few days if somebody was breathing down his back. However, Kish says that rookies can expect to ride about 12 hours faster in their 2nd RAAM so it could be a very close race.

  • 1981 Double Transcontinental Record Attempt
1981 Double Transcontinental Record Attempt by Lon Haldeman 1981 Double Transcontinental AN UP CLOSE VIEW Introduction by Ed Haldeman Listening to a weekly radio broadcast in the 1940’s involved the thrilling adventures of the Lone Ranger and his trusty Indian sidekick, Tonto. It was a requirement for thousands of thrill seeking youngsters like myself to tune the radio dial following our return from school. None of us would have dared miss his latest episode and escape from some new peril. For thirty minutes our ears would be glued to the sound box as we listened spellbound to the adventures of the famous masked man. Each weekly lead-in would begin --”Return with us to Yesteryear......”. Today, these many years later, we return to experiences of a different nature. Instead of listening enthralled to sounds of galloping hoof beats by the Lone Ranger’s horse, Silver, emanating from some far off radio station, our ears in the 1970’s and 1980’s were tuned instead to the whir and purr of rolling bicycle wheels. Sounds changed as rubber encountered a variety of road surfaces spanning our nation. During grade school years Lon Haldeman adopted a steed which rolled instead of clopped, squeaked instead of neighed, and which required devouring thousands of calories while moving instead of standing at a food trough filled with hay and oats. Saddles were mounted on each, one on a horse, the other on a bicycle. Neither were the most comfortable, but gradually were accepted as tolerable and efficient. Lon’s obtaining such a strange beast would require strenuous personal effort involving propulsion.
