”SUSTAINABILITY IN SPORTS – SOLARIZING SOCCER AND CRICKET“ | 28th May - 4th June 2017 | Germany 3 India now consumes more than 6,600 TWh of energy per year, but its per capita electricity consumption of around 1,000 kWh, is less than one seventh of that of industrialized countries. This creates considerable challenges in all areas of society and in rural and urban regions. Restricted access to energy, be it for private households, industrial enterprises or service providers, limits opportunities for economic development and poverty reduction. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has taken several steps to fructify Prime Minister Shri ’s dream of clean energy. The largest renewable capacity expansion programme in the world is being taken up by India. The government is aiming to increase share of clean energy through massive thrust in renewables. Core drivers for development and deployment of new and re- newable energy in India have been Energy security, Electricity shortages, Energy Access, Climate change etc.In 2015 India set itself the ambitious goal of generating 175 GW of renewable energy by 2022, including 100 GW from Solar PV systems. Several sectors such as airports, ports, warehouses, religious establishments, government buildings, canal tops, stadiums etc. can be the host of the large capacities of rooftop solar energy power plants. As far as Indian Sport Facilities are con- cerned, these do not qualify for any government subsidies or incentives and therefore are prone to implement solar energy plants with international developers and components to make them the Lighthouse projects for the renewable energy movement in India. However, initial support is required by such institutions for the adoption of solar energy projects. Accordingly, in order to create the awareness GIZ has supported the State Cricket Association for the imple- mentation of rooftop solar photovoltaic power plant of suitable capacity at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium at . The main objective of the campaign is to promote sustainability and especially solar rooftops through sports. MNRE in co- operation with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has aligned with GIZ (German Development Cooperation) to further solarize Indian Stadia. Th e main aim is to show best practice models from Germany where a “Solare ” had been established in the context of the soccer worldcup, which took place in 2006.

Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd. (SECI) is a Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) under the administrative control of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), set up on 20th Sept, 2011 to facilitate the implementation of Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) and achievement of targets set therein. It is the only CPSU dedicated to the solar energy sector. In the present outlook of the RE sector, especially solar energy, SECI has a major role to play in the sector’s development. The company is responsible for implementation of a number of schemes of MNRE, major ones being the VGF schemes for large-scale grid-connected projects under JNNSM, solar park scheme and grid-connec- ted solar rooftop scheme, along with a host of other specialised schemes such as defence scheme, canal-top scheme, Indo-Pak border scheme etc. SECI is currently processing 1,2 GW grid connected Solar PV tenders with the lowest bid of 3,5 EURct./kWh. for 500 MW Bhadla Solar Park in . In addition, SECI has ventured into solar project develop- ment on turnkey basis for several PSUs. The company also has a power-trading license and is active in this domain through trading of solar power from projects set up under the schemes being implemented by it.

N I S E National Institute of Solar Energy

National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) is an autonomous institute under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India. It is established to facilitate the Research & Development, Testing, Certification, Skill Development activities in the field of Solar Energy. NISE also supports the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in the implementati- on of prestigious National Solar Mission. The institute is committed to the development and demonstration of solar energy technologies and its applications to the common man in India. NISE continuously strives to improve the facilities so as to compete with the latest technological advancements. NISE is also maintaining a NABL accredited solar photovoltaic module testing laboratory, lighting system test laboratory, battery testing facility and a water pumping system test rig and outdoor test facilities. The centre has fully developed testing facility for small and large size solar thermal systems and Solar Resource Assessment.

Main goal of the campaign is to promote sustainability and especially solar rooftops through sports. The Green

Wicket project so far supported the installation of a solar rooftop on the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore along with other sustainable measures such as rain water harvesting, waste water recycling and solid waste management. MNRE in cooperation with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has aligned with GIZ (German Development

Cooperation) to further solarize Indian Stadia.

The main aim is to show best practice models from Germany, where a “Solare Bundesliga” had been established in the context of the soccer worldcup, which took place in 2006.

Karnataka State Cricket The Karnataka State Cricket Association (formerly the Mysore Cricket Association) is committed to develop Kar- Association (KSCA) nataka as the premier cricketing state in the country. It aims to take the game to mofussil areas of the state for development at the grassroots level and to continuously promote the welfare of its players. The KSCA was founded during the year 1933-34 and affiliated to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The Association made steady progress from 1934 to 1959 when the Silver Jubilee was celebrated to coincide with the visit of the Australian team to Bangalore to play against the Combined Universities XI. In the late Sixties the Association acquired its own cricket ground and the stadium now known as the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium came into being. Bangalore became a Test centre, and several memorable tests and One-Day International matches, including the 1996 World Cup quar- ter-finals, have taken place here. Kerala Cricket Association Kerala has always been in the forefront in its bid to foster sporting talent in India. Though Keralites in general favor football over any other sport, there were a few pioneers in cricket as well. The Mambally family of Clincher, contributed greatly to the enrichment of the game. P M Raghavan, who led the first Travancore-Cochin team in the Ranji Trophy in 1951, was a hard hitting batsman and an astute captain. K V Kellappan Thampuran was the live wire behind the great achievements of the Tripunithura Cricket club, formed in 1935. It was he who was the brain behind the limited over format. Col. Godavarma Raja of the Travancore royal family was responsible for putting Kerala on the sports and tourist map of India. The Kerala Cricket Association emerged from the Travancore-Cochin Cricket Association formed by him in 1950. He was the first from the state to become a vice-president of the BCCI. Gradually however, things made a turn for the better and through the sixties, Kerala participated in the various inter-school and age group tournaments run by the BCCI.
