Street Fighter
STREET FIGHTER by Luis Filipe Based on Capcom's videogame "Street Fighter II" Copyright © 2019 This is a fan script [email protected] OVER BLACK. All we hear is the excited CHEER of a crowd. Hundreds of voices roaring in unison, teasing something to come. Under those voices, there is also the rhythmic sound of TRAMPLES on the floor that sound like drums. CUT TO: INT. CORRIDOR - NIGHT A dirty, dimly lit corridor. A few meters ahead, a beam of light leaks through a door that gives access to another scenario. Standing in the corridor hidden in total shadow, a barefoot MAN attired in a white karate gi uniform tightens a black martial arts BELT. We do not see his face. The cheer continues, seeming to be coming from beyond that door in the hallway. After putting on the belt, the man takes a pair of RED GLOVES from his duffel bag, which is on a bench beside him. He wears them calmly. Finally, he also grabs a RED HEADBAND from the bag and ties it around his head. All this is almost ritualistic for him. When completed, the mysterious man walks toward the corridor door where comes the intense light. INT. STREET FIGHTER ARENA - NIGHT A large warehouse-like room. Wooden boxes surround the boundaries of the fighting area. And behind these boxes are the spectators, some sit in stands and others stand on feet. Our mysterious man comes in, revealing his face for the first time: RYU. A Japanese experienced martial artist. The audience goes wild to see him there. -

Frank G. Bosman and Archibald L. H. M. van Wieringen Reading The Book of Joseph A Communication-Oriented Analysis of Far Cry 5 Abstract In the game Far Cry 5, a book called The Book of Joseph plays an important role. It is the confession, autobiography and sermon compilation of Joseph Seed, the leader of the fundamentalist, Christian-inspired violent Doomsday cult called “Project at Eden’s Gate”. In the game, the player is tasked to defeat Seed’s grip on – fictional – Hope Coun- ty, Montana (USA). The Book of Joseph is not only found in the game, where its content is kept hidden from the player, but is also featured in a live-action trailer, called The Baptism. Most importantly, Joseph Seed’s book has also been published as a physical object and was distributed to the first2 ,000 buyers of the Mondo edition of the game. In this article, the authors argue that the communicative function of The Book of Joseph differs significantly from one medial object to the next (game, trailer, book), influenced by the intertextual and intermedial relationships between those medial objects and by their exclusive characteristics. Using a communication-oriented method of text analy- sis, the authors investigate the various communicative processes within the different “texts”, in order to establish the narrative loci of the book’s materiality. Keywords Far Cry 5, The Book of Joseph, Communication-Oriented Method, Intertextuality, Cult, Intermediality, Materiality Biographies Frank G. Bosman is a theologian of culture and a senior researcher at the Tilburg School of Catholic Theology, Tilburg University, the Netherlands. -
Fighting Games, Performativity, and Social Game Play a Dissertation
The Art of War: Fighting Games, Performativity, and Social Game Play A dissertation presented to the faculty of the Scripps College of Communication of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Todd L. Harper November 2010 © 2010 Todd L. Harper. All Rights Reserved. This dissertation titled The Art of War: Fighting Games, Performativity, and Social Game Play by TODD L. HARPER has been approved for the School of Media Arts and Studies and the Scripps College of Communication by Mia L. Consalvo Associate Professor of Media Arts and Studies Gregory J. Shepherd Dean, Scripps College of Communication ii ABSTRACT HARPER, TODD L., Ph.D., November 2010, Mass Communications The Art of War: Fighting Games, Performativity, and Social Game Play (244 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Mia L. Consalvo This dissertation draws on feminist theory – specifically, performance and performativity – to explore how digital game players construct the game experience and social play. Scholarship in game studies has established the formal aspects of a game as being a combination of its rules and the fiction or narrative that contextualizes those rules. The question remains, how do the ways people play games influence what makes up a game, and how those players understand themselves as players and as social actors through the gaming experience? Taking a qualitative approach, this study explored players of fighting games: competitive games of one-on-one combat. Specifically, it combined observations at the Evolution fighting game tournament in July, 2009 and in-depth interviews with fighting game enthusiasts. In addition, three groups of college students with varying histories and experiences with games were observed playing both competitive and cooperative games together. -

Analyzing Modular Smoothness in Video Game Music
Analyzing Modular Smoothness in Video Game Music Elizabeth Medina-Gray KEYWORDS: video game music, modular music, smoothness, probability, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Portal 2 ABSTRACT: This article provides a detailed method for analyzing smoothness in the seams between musical modules in video games. Video game music is comprised of distinct modules that are triggered during gameplay to yield the real-time soundtracks that accompany players’ diverse experiences with a given game. Smoothness —a quality in which two convergent musical modules fit well together—as well as the opposite quality, disjunction, are integral products of modularity, and each quality can significantly contribute to a game. This article first highlights some modular music structures that are common in video games, and outlines the importance of smoothness and disjunction in video game music. Drawing from sources in the music theory, music perception, and video game music literature (including both scholarship and practical composition guides), this article then introduces a method for analyzing smoothness at modular seams through a particular focus on the musical aspects of meter, timbre, pitch, volume, and abruptness. The method allows for a comprehensive examination of smoothness in both sequential and simultaneous situations, and it includes a probabilistic approach so that an analyst can treat all of the many possible seams that might arise from a single modular system. The Sony Playstation 2 Case
The Sony PlayStation 2 case THE SONY PLAYSTATION 2 The video games industry comprises both hardware (games consoles) and games software, much of it dedicated. This case discusses the rapid growth of Sony’s first video games machine in the mid-late 1990s - and which quickly became a major contributor to Sony’s profits - and the launch of its successor, PlayStation 2, in 2000. The launch was affected by temporary supply chain problems. This case looks at the possible impact of the Nintendo GameCube and Microsoft’s X-Box, both due for launch in November 2001. This case was written by John L Thompson in 2001 from a variety of published sources for the purposes of class discussion. It should not be taken to reflect either effective or ineffective management. INTRODUCTION Late in 2000 Sony was unable to satisfy the early demand in both the US and Europe for its new PlayStation 2 video games console. It was experiencing internal supply problems of critical components, a real setback in the run-up to Christmas, the peak sales period. The innovative Sony has typically striven to bring its new products to market as quickly as possible, laying it open to criticism that it will not get things 100% right. One rival, Sega, seized the opportunity this created to promote its newest model, the Dreamcast. The other main competitor, Nintendo, planned a new model launch in 2001. Microsoft was also planning to enter this market for the first time in 2001. In 1994 Sony had been a ‘non-entity’ in the video games market - but by 1996 it was the world leader of this fast growth market. -
