First up was the 6-year-old gelding Brae Hill (Ire) (Fath) in 2012, followed by Gabrial (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) three years later. Fahey noted that the popular contest has become more difficult to win. "The Lincoln has got a lot tougher to win in the last five years, but Gabrial was a decent horse," said Fahey. "He was a group horse in a handicap really, whereas Brae Hill was a good, hardy handicapper, the type that used to do well in it. "Our horses are always very fit when they run in it. • “We Just Don't Want to Frighten the Horses”
“WE JUST DON’T WANT TO FRIGHTEN THE HORSES”: THE 1975 STABLE LADS’ STRIKE Janet Winters > Bristol Business School > University of the West of England > Frenchay Campus > Coldharbour Lane > Bristol > BS16 1QY Email: [email protected] “WE JUST DON’T WANT TO FRIGHTEN THE HORSES”: THE 1975 STABLE LADS’ STRIKE Introduction The TGWU first organised the Newmarket stable lads in 1935 moving on to other racing centres such as Lambourn, which had been the “starting point for the stable lads‟ strike of 1938” in support of higher wages (Racing Post 2001). Ultimately, TGWU organisation was turned to the disadvantage of stable lads, then as now still enduring a largely feudal employment relationship, rooted in the class structure of a bygone era. For these reasons, the 1975 strike looms large in the industry‟s folklore - “There was one event in 1975 which towers above all others in the context of racing history, and that was the stable lads‟ strike.” (Wilson 1998:232). The strike had quite unintended and certainly unexpected consequences for the future of industrial relations in the industry. However, the development of national collective bargaining amongst a group of small firms, its retention in the face of more recent trends to decentralise, and its outcomes for workers remain unexplored. This paper considers evidence drawn from a wider case study of the racing labour process and the social relations which surround it. The evidence is drawn from a number of sources, primarily historical sources in order to establish the context of collective bargaining and the 1975 strike and then data from semi-structured interviews with current workers, which were conducted from October 2003 to June 2004.

  • When Other Royal Meeting's Weren't
WHEN OTHER ROYAL MEETING’S WEREN’T QUITE THE SAME… 11th June 2020 These are unprecedented times, certainly in our lifetimes. Royal Ascot Behind Closed Doors marks another chapter in the racecourse’s history. Whilst it is desperately sad that the most colourful event in the racing calendar will be open to only a few, one day it’ll be the stuff of legend, very much like… The “Black” Royal Ascots Queen Victoria died aged 81 on January 22, 1901, bringing her then record 63-year reign to a close. As the nation remained in mourning, Royal Ascot that year was held in a sombre mood with the Royal Stand closed and the racecard featuring a black border. Dressing in black was also the order of the day, although it was recorded in The Times that by the Thursday, when the Gold Cup was run, “a number of ladies who were in black on the first two days had assumed a more modified form of mourning, as there were many dresses of white, lavender and mauve, although not enough to impart any colour to the scene.” The new Sovereign, King Edward VII, was also absent from the Royal Meeting in 1901, although this was on account of his own illness. His extreme discomfort turned out to be appendicitis and also resulted in his Coronation, scheduled for a fortnight after Royal Ascot, to be postponed. King Edward VII, a great devotee of the turf, himself died on May 6, 1910 at the age of 68. Royal Ascot again saw an overwhelming dominance of black attire, with the Daily Mirror recording “Strange and striking were the contrasts at Ascot.

Cambridge University Press 978-1-107-01385-8 - The Cambridge Companion to Horseracing Edited by Rebecca Cassidy Frontmatter More information The Cambridge Companion to Horseracing People have been racing horses for thousands of years, all over the world. Yet horseracing is often presented as an English creation that was exported, unaltered, to the colonies. This Companion investigates the intersection of racing and literature, art, history and finance, casting the sport as the product of cross-class, cosmopolitan and international influences. Chapters on racing history and the origins of the thoroughbred demonstrate how the gift of a fast horse could forge alliances between nations, and the extent to which international power dynamics can be traced back to racetracks and breeding sheds. Leading scholars and journalists draw on original research and firsthand experience to create vivid portraits of the racetracks of Newmarket, Kentucky, the Curragh and Hunter Valley, exposing readers to new racing frontiers in China and Dubai as well. A unique resource for fans and scholars alike, this Companion reopens essential questions regarding the legacy and importance of horseracing today. rebecca cassidy is a professor of anthropology at Goldsmiths, University of London.
