  • The Post Infocom Text Adventure Collection
The Post Infocom Text Adventure Collection Many of us played and loved the text adventures produced by Infocom in the 1980’s. They were rich in story and puzzles, and contained some excellent writing. In the years since Infocom’s demise in 1989, there have been a lot of good games produced using the Z-Machine - the game format that Infocom was using. This gives us a chance to make these modern-day games run on the computers of the 80’s, like the Commodore 64. I decided to create a collection of Z-machine games for the C64, and this is it. All in all, it’s 31 games, released in 1993-2015. Each game has been put into its own directory, in which is also an empty disk for game saves and a file called AUTOSWAP.LST to make life easier for people using the SD2IEC diskdrive substitute. If you haven’t played text adventures before, or feel that you never got the hang of it, you should read the chapter How to play a text adventure. If you want more of a background on Infocom and the game format they used, you should read the chapter about The Zork Machine at the end of this document. There is also a chapter about the process of porting Z-machine games to the C64 and, finally, a chapter about writing your own games. I created this documentation as a PDF, so that you could easily print it out and keep it nearby if you’re enjoying the collection on a real C64.

  • 2004 February
February 2004 Games and Entertainment Megan Morrone Today you can use the same machine to organize your finances, create a presentation for your boss, and defend the Earth from flesh-eating aliens. But let’s be honest: Even with the crazy advances in software, organizing your finances and creating a presentation for your boss are still not half as much fun as defending the Earth from flesh-eating aliens. That’s why we’ve devoted the entire month of February to the noble pursuit of games and entertainment for PCs, Macs, game consoles, and PDAs. I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking that you can skip right over this chapter because you’re not a gamer. Gamers are all sweaty, pimpled, 16-year-old boys who lock themselves in their basements sustained only by complex carbohydrates and Mountain Dew for days on end, right? Wrong.Video games aren’t just for young boys anymore. Saying you don’t like video games is like saying you don’t like ice cream or cheese or television or fun.Are you trying to tell me that you don’t like fun? If you watch The Screen Savers, you know that each member of our little TV family has a uniquely different interest in games. Morgan loves a good frag fest, whereas Martin’s tastes tend toward the bizarre (think frogs in blenders or cow tossing.) Kevin knows how to throw a cutting-edge LAN party, while Joshua and Roger like to kick back with old-school retro game emulators. I like to download free and simple low-res games that you can play on even the dinkiest PC, whereas Patrick prefers to build and rebuild the perfect system for the ultimate gaming experience (see February 13).And leave it to Leo to discover the most unique new gaming experience for the consummate early adopter (see February 1).

Subsequently, system evolution is hampered by the resulting state of unevenness, or reverse salience, which results from the presence of the sub‐system that delivers the lowest level of performance with respect to other sub‐systems, namely, the reverse salient.

  • Participatory Gaming Culture
Master thesis Participatory gaming culture: Indie game design as dialogue between player & creator Martijn van Best student ID: 3175421 [email protected] New Media Studies Faculty of Humanities UTRECHT UNIVERSITY Course code: 200700088 THE-Scriptie / MA NMDC Supervisor: Erna Kotkamp Second reader: René Glas DATE: March 28th, 2011 1 To Mieke 2 Abstract In this thesis I argue that the current dichotomy between indie game design and mainstream design based on commercial appeal versus creative audacity is non-constructive. Instead, I wish to investigate to what extent indie game designers are able to establish a personal dialogue with their audience through their game. I frame independent game design as a participatory culture in which indies alter and modify existing game design conventions through a practice called abusive game design. This is a concept developed by Douglas Wilson and Miguel Sicart. Players who wish to master (partially) abusive games, need to learn about the designer's intentions rather than the game system. I argue that a designer's visibility in this way allows for a dialogue between creator and player. However, in a case study of indie title Super Crate Box (2010), it appears that in order to maintain a sense of fun, certain conventions of mainstream game design need to be adhered to. Indie designers, who often have the most visible and personal relationship with their audience, need to navigate between their wish for a personal connection with players and user friendly, but 'faceless' design. Scaling the tipping point too much to the abusive side instead of the conventional one, may be counter to designers' wishes to create an enjoyable game.

This is where I met many of the independent game designers I’ve come to know and respect while feeling this renewed sense of vigor about my academic studies. I came alive when I discovered this area of study and I still have that spark every time I talk about it to others or read someone else’s inquiry into independent game development. For this, I thank Dr. Peaslee for being the catalyst in finding a home for my passions. More pertinent to the pages that follow, Dr. Peaslee also carefully combed through each malformed draft I sent his way, narrowed my range of topics, encouraged me to keep my sense of progress and challenged me to overcome challenges I had not previously faced. I feel honored to have worked with him on this as well as previous projects.

  • Floyd Here Now!"
"Floyd Here Now!" A Study of Planetfall's Most Enduring Character Kirk Shimano STS 145 Case History March 16, 2004 "There is a multiple purpose robot here." In 1983, Infocom published Planetfall. This science-fiction themed text adventure introduced players to a robot named Floyd - a diminutive sidekick with the personality of an eight-year-old. Floyd whistles tunelessly, gossips relentlessly, and ultimately sacrifices his life so that the hero can live. Players have been talking about Floyd ever since. "The emotions I (and others) felt with this supporting character is legendary," wrote one gamer on MobyGames, 16 years after Planetfall was originally released. "This has to be experienced to be believed. I don't think anyone has come as close in any other game today."1 In 2001, another gamer on Slashdot.org posted, "Are you kidding? Losing Floyd was probably the most emotional moment I'll ever have playing computer games."2 In listing his favorite titles on an adventure game newsgroup, another gamer posted "Planetfall - Floyd, need I say more?"3 Perhaps a decade ago, nothing more needed to be said. But as computer games have progressed from diskettes to CDs to DVDs, a smaller and smaller percentage of gamers have played any text adventures at all. The features that made Floyd an endearing character are no longer widely known or immediately obvious. In today's graphically- centric medium, character design is intrinsically linked with questions of physical appearance, costume design, and animation - all of which are aspects that Floyd wholly lacked. Writings about Planetfall tend to focus only on gamers' reactions to Floyd's death, but while that shows us the end result of his characterization, it does not explain how the bond between Floyd and the player comes to be.

  • Tencent Games Strategy 2020
Tencent Games Strategy 2020 Asia Games Market Intelligence: Tencent Games Strategy Profile Tencent is a Chinese technology conglomerate founded in 1998. It is one of the top 10 public corporations globally, by market cap, and is one of the world’s largest venture capital and investment firms. Tencent’s success is at least partially attributable to WeChat and QQ, which are two of the largest social messaging platforms globally (despite being used primarily in China). It is also the largest gaming company in the world by revenue, having generated games revenue of $20.2 billion in 2019. Tencent Games was founded in 2003 – we at Niko Partners like to say that since we were founded in 2002, we have been analyzing the games market in China longer than Tencent has had a Games division. Tencent has solidified its position as the #1 games developer and publisher globally, primarily through success in its home market of China where it ranks as both the #1 mobile and PC game publisher by market share. The company has refined its internal development operations, marketing and publishing capabilities to successfully launch self-developed and licensed games in China. The company has also enhanced its portfolio of games, primarily through investments in more than 80 games companies globally. Part of this involves investment in global game development and publishing capabilities to further extend its presence outside China, focusing primarily on self-developed titles based on original or licensed IP. No new “wow” elements for the 2020 strategy: 1. Strengthen self-development capabilities in China and overseas 2.

Abstract Rosén, J. 2009. Hyperdistribution and the future of copyright economics A study of the contemporary Nordic Gaming industry. Master thesis. This interdisciplinary study shows that because of the changing demands from consumer caused by the growing influence of the internet and file-sharing the Nordic Gaming industry is going through an economic evolution. This result was derived by using qualitative questionnaires directed towards Gaming industry decision makers in the Nordic region combined with critical discourse analysis based on the methodology of Norman Fairclough, using theories of different characters to understand the field. In this thesis the case of the Nordic Gaming industry is used to assert that because of changing demands of consumers and an ever growing piracy movement, societies are evolving into transitional economies where it is increasingly harder to sell products consisting of pure information.
