Y. 10562 (914) 941-3554 FAX (914) 941-5940 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Music Legend Sonny Sharrock to Be Recognized by an Honorary Street-Renaming Free-Jazz Guitar Master, Miles Davis Sideman Warren "Sonny" Sharrock Gets His Due, Oct. 2, in Ceremony Conducted by Bill Hanauer, Mayor, Village of Ossining; Special Performance by Sons of Sharrock 2010 Marks What Would Have Been Musician's 70th Birthday WHAT: The Village of Ossining, in conjunction with the family and friends of the late, great guitar legend Warren "Sonny" Sharrock (August 27, 1940 – May 26, 1994), is pleased to announce that an honorary Street Re-naming ceremony will be held on Saturday, October 2nd. Mayor Hanauer said "Sonny Sharrock honored his native Village of Ossining with his brilliance, influential musicianship and his ability to inspire generations of artists. As he brought honor to our community we will honor him with this ceremony." South Malcolm Street in Ossining, will be renamed “Sonny Sharrock Way,”. There will be a special performance by Sons of Sharrock, a newly formed reportorial band under the direction of Sharrock's cousin and former collaborator Kendall Buchanan. WHEN: Saturday, October 2, 3PM Corner of South Malcolm Street and Hamilton Avenue, Ossining, NY 10562 Map: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl WHY YOU SHOULD GO: Hailed as the father of free-jazz guitar by the New York Times, Sonny Sharrock carved his own unique niche in the world of jazz by adapting the free-form improvisational style pioneered by 1960s jazz horn players to the guitar. One of the first jazz guitarists to incorporate dissonance, distortion, feedback, and chord clusters into his playing style, he revolutionized jazz guitar concepts by developing an abstract, passionate, and truly original instrumental voice in his work with Miles Davis, Bill Cosby, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Mann, Pharoah Sanders, Bill Laswell, and more. His string-breaking, rule- shattering, free-for-all improvising influenced two generations of guitarists from jazz master Nicky Skopelitis to rock players Carlos Santana, Vernon Reid and Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready. "My view of improvisation is very personal," Sharrock wrote in Guitar Player magazine. "It’s full of love, anger, truth, lies, and, in the end (I hope), sense.” Contacts: Christina Papes Bill Lessard, PRwithBrains 914-941-3554 Sonny Sharrock Family/Sons of Sharrock [email protected] [email protected] 914.476.6089 - office 914.330.3501 - cell .

GOODISON: Tell me about your life before you came to New York. TATE: I was born in Dayton, Ohio, and we moved to DC when I was about twelve, so that would have been about 1971, 1972, and that was about the same time I really got interested in music, collecting music, really interested in collecting jazz and rock, and reading music criticism too. It kinda all happened at the same time. I had a subscription to Rolling Stone. I was really into Miles Davis. He was like my god in the 1970s. Miles, George Clinton, Sun Ra, and locally we had a serious kind of band scene going on.

He spent his first 25 years moving back and forth between Finland and the USA, finally leaving the States after graduating from the Berklee School of Music in Boston. He settled in Helsinki, where he began to integrate his interest in ethnic and electronic musics into the bands that he was fronting at the time and the rock and jazz styles he was already adept at. Raoul first came to international attention with Edward Vesala's Sound & Fury band. Bjorkenheim says: “Vesela wanted me to let loose and totally obliterate anything that had to do with standard guitar.” Bjorkenheim formed his own group Krakatau as an offshoot of Sound & Fury. In 1988, Krakatau recorded its first album, Ritual. The record featured a unique blend of heavy guitar work that used feedback and distortion combined with dual wailing, Coleman and Ayler-influenced horns and a rhythm section that included bass (electric and acoustic) and two drummers. Despite being released only on lp and only in Finland, it gained attention from critics and listeners alike. The Wire called Ritual "…a hotter, more raw proposition, expressionistically blowing the lid off Finnish stoicism. …Björkenheim’s writing merits comparison with Shannon Jackson’s best… In short, this is a vital and important record signaling the arrival of some world-class talents.” By the time of Krakatau’s 3nd release, Volition, it had been signed to the well-known German ECM label.

  • View the Redux Book Here
1 Photo: Alex Hurst REDUX This Redux box set is on the 30 Hertz Records label, which I started in 1997. Many of the tracks on this box set originated on 30 Hertz. I did have a label in the early eighties called Lago, on which I released some of my first solo records. These were re-released on 30 Hertz Records in the early noughties. 30 Hertz Records was formed in order to give me a refuge away from the vagaries of corporate record companies. It was one of the wisest things I have ever done. It meant that, within reason, I could commission myself to make whatever sort of record took my fancy. For a prolific artist such as myself, it was a perfect situation. No major record company would have allowed me to have released as many albums as I have. At the time I formed the label, it was still a very rigid business; you released one album every few years and ‘toured it’ in the hope that it became a blockbuster. On the other hand, my attitude was more similar to most painters or other visual artists. I always have one or two records on the go in the same way they always have one or two paintings in progress. My feeling has always been to let the music come, document it by releasing it then let the world catch up in its own time. Hopefully, my new partnership with Cherry Red means that Redux signifies a new beginning as well as documenting the past.

The guitarist, composer and loops magician is a quiet but ubiquitous force on stages around his hometown. With fearsome chops and a keen ear for odd beauty, Pirog has helped expand the possibilities of jazz, rock and experimentalism in a city formerly known for its straight-ahead tradition. Pirog performs regularly in a broad spectrum of venues (and musical contexts) across DC – jazz and rock clubs, the Kennedy Center Millenium Stage, art galleries and museums, the annual Sonic Circuits Festival of Experimental Music, and much more. DC has a rich legacy of brilliant guitarists and gifted composers – Danny Gatton, Roy Buchanan, John Fahey, and Duke Ellington come to mind for key roles they played in the city’s 20th Century musical past. In the cutting-edge cultural and technological mecca that is the new, 21st Century Washington, Anthony Pirog is DC’s leading guitarist/composer and fast rising star. Palo Colorado Dream—recorded with the all-star trio of Michael Formanek on bass and Ches Smith on drums—is Pirog’s Cuneiform Records debut as a bandleader, and it marks the young innovator’s entrance onto the national stage.
