References 43 Abstract: Modern ecclesiology has been evolving over the last few decades as Christian institutions and belief systems have adapted in response to postmodern society. This trend is known as the emerging church movement. A movement that spans across denominational lines, the emerging church has influenced Church culture by attempting to change the way individuals view religion This study examines the trends within Christianity over the last several years and their impacts on ecclesiology and society. Findings include a more progressive theology, an increased emphasis on missiology, changes in structure of religious services, and a deeper connectedness with the global community. Mass and Mission: Enacting God's Mission in the Christian Assembly Today Thomas H. Schattauer I doubt that I need to underscore the ferment surrounding the matters that are the theme of this year's Institute: worship and mission. The practice of worship in our congregations has become fragmented by multiple and competing proposals for what should happen when we gather. As a teacher of worship, the questions and discussions I encounter day by day reveal a general distrust of conventional liturgical practice and a genuine hunger for something-anything-that will engage and enliven people at worship in our time and place. There is no simple and direct approach to matters ofworship-this is what we do, this is where it comes from, this is what is means, this is how to do it-with people lining up to receive authoritative pronouncements. There is real engagement with fundamental questions and a willingness to consider the value of our historic liturgical inheritance, but there is less and less common practice or shared experience of worship to draw on and little consensus about which direction to head. On the mission side of things, there is also considerable ferment. We have evangelism strategies and encouragements to traditional social ministry as well as more political, even partisan social engagement. We all have mission statements and vision statements and action plans; we consume strategies for congregational renewal and mission. There is increasing awareness of the complex contours of our own society-its racial and ethnic diversity, its cultural and religious pluralism, its wealth and poverty-as well as the global horizon of our lives. -

The following bibliography covers additional resources (by no means exhaustive), some of which may be required reading for courses in the Master and Doctor of Worship Studies programs. In light of the fact that Christian worship is always embodied within the cultural context of a community, the resources mentioned in the following bibliography will refer to cultural analyses as well as theological studies. Many titles could easily be categorized under several “headings,” so it would be wise to explore multiple areas when building a list of possible resources to examine. Heidbrink: Exploring the Religious Frameworks of the Digital Realm EXPLORING THE RELIGIOUS FRAMEWORKS OF THE DIGITAL REALM: OFFLINE‒ONLINE‒OFFLINE TRANSFERS OF RITUAL PERFORMANCE by SIMONE HEIDBRINK Looking at the constantly growing field of religion online, the shifts in and the new definition of religious frameworks become an increasingly important topic. In the field of religious rituals, it is not only the participant, location and conduction of the ritual that is affected by this shift; also the researchers have to overthrow their former theologically resp. systemic based definition of religiousness and spirituality due to the fact that on the Internet, religion is defined and realized in a completely different way by its participants. This is true even in the field of Christianity as the example of a ritual created by some British „Emerging Church“ groups shows. These loosely defined groups which span all denominational borders of the Christian spectrum have been established since the late 1980s mainly in the UK in order to organize church services they refer to as „Alternative Worship“. The Inter- net plays an important role as a platform of communication and (self-)organization of the members and as technically and aesthetically challenging means of (re)presentation. Some events that were conducted in real life, like the multimedia labyrinth installation in St Paul`s cathedral in 2000, have even been „reconstruc- ted“ in virtual space,1 generating a new form of worship. Interestingly but not unexpectedly, these transfer processes entail consequences for spirituality in real life. -

259 RACHEL ATKINSON Alternative Worship: Post-Modern or Post-Mission Church? Rachel Atkinson here offers an overview and critique of the alternative worship movement. She outlines its roots and then focuses attention on four of its central characteristics – the concerns for contextualisation, experience, multi-sensory worship and participation. Finally, she evaluates its contribution to the church while also offering some serious challenges concerning its attitude and practice in relation to mission in the world. The term ’alternative worship’ is potentially applicable to a range of contemporary expressions of worship, but has come to refer to a particular genre of worship services in Britain, New Zealand, Australia and America. Although diverse in content and style, alternative worship events share a common desire to bring ‘the authentic message of Christ to bear on life in postmodernity’.1 In doing so they usually combine ‘mixed-media technology and techniques with an eclectic use of the worship traditions of the church’.2 The extensive use of the historic resources of the Church renders the designation ‘alternative worship’ (alt.worship) somewhat imprecise, but the term is nevertheless used to describe a particular form of worship, sometimes expressed through occasional or regular services, and sometimes through alt.worship groups which are emerging as distinct communities both within existing denominations and as post-denominational gatherings. This article briefly looks at alt.worship’s roots, examines in some detail its shoots, before concluding with an evaluation of its fruits. Alternative worship: the roots The Nine O’Clock Service The beginnings of the alt.worship movement can be traced back to the Nine O’Clock Service (NOS) in the late 1980’s. -

The Emerging Church–Part 2: Epistemology, Theology, and Ministry Fernando Canale Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary Andrews University Having outlined a basic historical context from which to understand and evaluate current mutations taking place within the evangelical movement in the first article of this series, we now turn our attention to the “emerging church” movement itself. Probably most people associate the “Emerging Church” label with a worship style fad. On July 8, 2005, a PBS Special Documentary defined the “Emerging Church” as “a growing movement that is rethinking what Christianity and the Church should look like in contemporary culture.”1 The anchor, Bob Abernethy, went on to explain that the emerging church movement is about worship and doing church for the next generation in a changing culture. However, as Evangelicalism, the emerging church is a complex and variegated movement that defies definition.2 One reason for this is that “the churches that embrace this label are not monolithic.
