The Emerging Church–Part 2: Epistemology, Theology, and Ministry Fernando Canale Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary Andrews University Having outlined a basic historical context from which to understand and evaluate current mutations taking place within the evangelical movement in the first article of this series, we now turn our attention to the “emerging church” movement itself. Probably most people associate the “Emerging Church” label with a worship style fad. On July 8, 2005, a PBS Special Documentary defined the “Emerging Church” as “a growing movement that is rethinking what Christianity and the Church should look like in contemporary culture.”1 The anchor, Bob Abernethy, went on to explain that the emerging church movement is about worship and doing church for the next generation in a changing culture. However, as Evangelicalism, the emerging church is a complex and variegated movement that defies definition.2 One reason for this is that “the churches that embrace this label are not monolithic.
