JENKINS It is the twelfth of November and near the top of Franklin's tree, the size and shape of overgrown pearls, are five unopened buds that surely will be caught by the killing frost, which this year, later than usual, cannot now be long in coming. Since the first of August the tree has been in constant bloom and like the venerable philosopher, whose growing namesake it is, Franklinia Altamaha is giving of its beneficence as did he, with the same generous hand, up to the very end. Few trees or shrubs bloom continuously for three months as does this and still fewer equal it in the beauty of its blossoms. They float in the air like minia- ture pond-lillies, with snow-white petals and a great cluster of golden stamens against the background of its magnolia-like leaves. No tree which ornaments our gardens has a more romantic history. For one hundred and forty years botanists have sought to find it growing in its native habitat by the Georgia river1 which is the descriptive part of its name. Cavanilles’ detailed illustrations established the dahlia in the botanical taxonomy In 1796, the third volume of “Icones” introduced two more dahlia species, named D. coccinea and D. rosea. They also were initially thought to be sunflowers and had been brought to Spain as part of the Alejandro Malaspina/Luis Neé expedition. More than 600 drawings brought the plant collection to light. Cavanilles, whose extensive correspondence included many of Europe’s leading botanists, began to develop a following far greater than his title of “sacerdote” (priest, in French Abbé) ever would have offered. The A. J. Cavanilles archives of the present‐day Royal Botanical Garden hold the botanist’s sizable oeu‐ vre, along with moren tha 1,300 letters, many dissertations, studies, and drawings. In time, Cavanilles achieved another goal: in 1801, he was finally appointed professor and director of the garden. Regrettably, he died in Madrid on May 10, 1804. The Cavanillesia, a tree from Central America, was later named for this famousMaterial Spanish scientist. ANDERS DAHL The lives of Dahl and his Spanish ‘godfather’ could not have been any more different. Born March 17,1751, in Varnhem town (Västergötland), this Swedish botanist struggled with health and financial hardship throughout his short life. While attending school in Skara, he and several teenage friends with scientific bent founded the “Swedish Topographic Society of Skara” and sought to catalogue the natural world of their community. With his preacher father’s support, the young Dahl enrolled on April 3, 1770, at Uppsala University in medicine, and he soon became one of Carl Linnaeus’ students. -

BOOK REVIEWS Dec. 258 John and William Bartram> Botanists and Explorers y i6gg—iyyjy 1739— 1823 (Pennsylvania Lives series). By Ernest Earnest. (Philadelphia, University of Pennsylvania Press, 1940. vii, 187 p. Portraits.) The second volume of "Pennsylvania Lives" now being published by the University of Pennsylvania Press is devoted to two of our most distinguished Pennsylvania naturalists, John and William Bartram, father and son. Of fine intellectual caliber, they, like others of Quaker faith at that time, were denied expression of their talents in art and music (or dancing), and like others of similar faith in the earlier days of our history they turned to serious reading and to scientific experiment or exploration. The author of the book succeeds immediately, by means of skillfully chosen quotations from letters and publications, interwoven with the results of exten- sive studies, in making the reader intimately acquainted with the strangely similar, yet widely different, personalities of father and son. The reviewer became so interested that he recently seized an opportunity to visit the old Bartram homestead and garden along the west bank of the Schuylkill in south- ern Philadelphia. Here, by his industry and skill, John Bartram had trans- formed swampy land into fertile fields, enlarged his farm to 261 acres, and by his own hands split the slabs of stone and added to the diminutive original Swedish house. The leaders of the American Philosophical Society, among whose founders Benjamin Franklin's name appears first and John BartramJs second, were men who labored and carried on their scientific work with their own hands. -

“So Many Things for His Profit and for His Pleasure”: British and Colonial Naturalists Respond to an Enlightenment Creed, 1727–1777 N MAY OF 1773 the Pennsylvania farmer and naturalist John Bartram (1699–1777) wrote to the son of his old colleague Peter Collinson I(1694–1768), the London-based merchant, botanist, and seed trader who had passed away nearly five years earlier, to communicate his worry over the “extirpation of the native inhabitants” living within American forests.1 Michael Collinson returned Bartram’s letter in July of that same year and was stirred by the “striking and curious” observations made by his deceased father’s friend and trusted natural historian from across the Atlantic. The relative threat to humanity posed by the extinction of species generally remained an unresolved issue in the minds of most eighteenth-century naturalists, but the younger Collinson was evidently troubled by the force of Bartram’s remarks. Your comments “carry Conviction along with them,” he wrote, “and indeed I cannot help thinking but that in the period you mention notwithstanding the amazing Recesses your prodigious Continent affords many of the present Species will become extinct.” Both Bartram and Collinson were anxious about certain changes to the environment engendered by more than a century of vigorous Atlantic trade in the colonies’ indigenous flora and fauna. Collinson 1 The terms botanist and naturalist carry different connotations, but are generally used interchange- ably here. Botanists were essentially those men that used Linnaeus’s classification to characterize plant life. They were part of the growing cadre of professional scientists in the eighteenth century who endeavored to efface irrational forms of natural knowledge, i.e., those grounded in folk traditions rather than empirical data. -

168 Chapter 22 Chapter 22 Freemasonry in Sweden Freemasonry in Sweden Henrik Bogdan The French Period Freemasonry arrived in Sweden as early as 1735, when the lieutenant Axel Wrede Sparre opened a so-called private lodge on Riddarholmen in Stockholm. Like many other young Swedish aristocrats during this period, Wrede Sparre had been initiated into Freemasonry abroad – in Wrede Sparre’s case he had been initiated into a French-Jacobite lodge in Paris at the age of 23, in 1731. It was also in Paris that the future first Swedish National Grand Master, Carl Fredrick Scheffer, was initiated in 1737, and Scheffer would in November of that year receive a charter from Charles Radclyffe, Earl of Derwentwater, to open one or more lodges in Sweden under French obedience. In addition to this charter, Radclyffe provided a set of Règles générales (Sw. Allmänna frimurar- lagar), which regulated the work in Sweden. The 1740s marked a chaotic period in Swedish Freemasonry, with several different lodges competing for recognition, often either founded by foreign masons in Sweden (such as General Keith’s lodge 1743–44, and the Lodge of Kilwinning [Sw. Kilwinningska logen], set up temporarily in Ystad in 1746 by officers from the army of Charles Edward Stuart), or by Swedish Masons who had been initiated abroad. In 1752 Knut Posse founded the lodge S:t Jean Auxiliaire at Stockholm, which is usually credited as the first regularly consti- tuted lodge in Sweden (with a charter from count Clermont-Tonnerre), and in 1753 Wrede Sparre, who had opened the first lodge in Sweden, would join the lodge and turn over his charter from Radclyffe. -

Fry, Bartram's Garden Presented at the ― James Logan and the Networks of Atlantic Culture and Politics, 1699-1751 conference Philadelphia, PA, 18-20 September 2014 Please do not cite, quote, or circulate without written permission from the author These days, John Bartram (1699-1777) and James Logan (1674-1751) are routinely recognized as significant figures in early American science, and particularly botanic science, even if exactly what they accomplished is not so well known. Logan has been described by Brooke Hindle as “undoubtedly the most distinguished scientist in the area” and “It was in botany that James Logan made his greatest contribution to science.” 1 Raymond Stearns echoed, “Logan’s greatest contribution to science was in botany.”2 John Bartram has been repeatedly crowned as the “greatest natural botanist in the world” by Linnaeus no less, since the early 19th century, although tracing the source for that quote and claim can prove difficult.3 Certainly Logan was a great thinker and scholar, along with his significant political and social career in early Pennsylvania. Was Logan a significant botanist—maybe not? John Bartram too may not have been “the greatest natural botanist in the world,” but he was very definitely a unique genius in his own right, and almost certainly by 1750 Bartram was the best informed scientist in the Anglo-American world on the plants of eastern North America. There was a short period of active scientific collaboration in botany between Bartram and Logan, which lasted at most through the years 1736 to 1738. -

INTRODUCTION In 1749, a heavy infestation of the periodical cicada occurred in Pennsylvania. Pehr Kalm, who was visiting there, described in detail the insect in its 18th century surroundings. His paper was published in Kongl. Svenska Vetenskaps Academiens, Handlingar, 17: 101-116, 1756, under the title "Beskrifning pa et slags Grashopper uti Norra America" (Description of a type of Grasshopper in North America). Because of the misleading title, it is doubtful that many scientists are aware of the existence of this early report on the periodical cicada. Kalm refers to the insect as a type of grasshopper, but he also says that it may well prove to be a cicada. The annual cicada, which Kalm and his contemporaries heard, was thought to be a vagrant periodical cicada. Although he was not clear on the taxonomy of the insect, his sharp observa- tions have given us an accurate account of the infestation. Among the many flying insects in North America there is a species of grass- hopper which seems to merit special discussion because of its extraordinary characteristics. The English refer to this species as locust, the Swedes, grashoppor. The Latin name may well be Cicada, maxilla utraque lineis octo transversis concavis; alarum margine inferiore lutescents. This cicada would seem to be exactly the same species as that found in the Provence and Languedoc in France, which is illustrated and described by Mr. -

Already in the middle Sof the seventeenth century there is a remarkable description on the new ly established Cape Province, its settlers and natural history written by Nils , Matsson Kioping - yes he was from Koping - and published several rimes in that century and the next. At the turn of the eighteenth century we find a disserration in Uppsala presided over by the professor of physics Harald Valle rius treating the geography of the Cape.' During this period there had been a number of Swedish immigrants to South Africa, among them Olof Bergh who wrote a much later published account and who established a Swedish dynasty at the Cape. Before 1800 about fifty Swedes had setrled in Sourh Africa.' During the Linnaean era, collaboration berween the Swedish and Dutch East India companies made travel to Sourh Africa more feasible.' Linnaeus wrote to his fTiend and patron Count Carl GustafTessin that "There is no place in the world with so many rare plants. animals, insects, and other wonders of Nature as Africa, and it seems as if they have been concentrated to the Cape.'" Linnaeus J corresponded with the governor of [he Cape Colony, Rijk Tulbagh, whom he named the genus Tttlbllghill af[er.' He tried to send students there - Pehr Kalm, Peter Forsskal, Marren Kahler and Engelberr Jorlin - but unsuccessfully.'
