1 Pack History 2015

The season started with much anticipation and excitement with the arrival of the boys in late June. Campers and staff from the , Mexico, Venezuela, Great Britain, Spain, Germany, France, Poland, Russia, Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and China arrived at camp eager to start the summer. The day started with Opening Day Ceremonies, Industry selections, and veteran campers teaching new campers the Mowglis Way, followed by the first regular Sunday afternoon, and the long-standing tradition of reading from The Jungle Book. It all made for a great start to the season. Staff and campers were off to a familiar quick start, with Industries, open period games, and the first trips departing. Akela hiked to Nancy Brook in the rain, and were treated with seeing some wildlife up close, as a black bear toyed with their food and toothpaste! The Den took two different routes through the Pemigewasset wilderness. Panther split into three groups; two traversing the Franconia ridge and the third getting deeper into the Pemigewasset Wilderness. Baloo crossed the lake in the War Canoes to Cliff Island. Belle Island was visited next by Toomai, and Akela took on their first Pack Trip to the Kinsman Ridge. On trip days a lot of trail clearing took place along the Mowglis trails, while the war canoes (and smaller canoes) explored the lake. The Yearling Program started with a new activity: Wilderness First Aid training. The group took the training seriously and did a great job. The instructor, a veteran combat medic, had nothing but good things to say about the boys. The group proceeded into the woods behind Bear Mountain, only to get lost, and find their way back. Through the various activities—kayaking, The Den of 2015 The biking, hiking, service projects, and climbing—the group became a high-functioning unit. And then, all of a sudden, it was Parents’ Weekend. Three weeks in and camp was running smoothly. The grounds were in good shape, the boys were working hard in Industries and began to earn Ribbon requirements. Inspections were starting to shape up, but Akela definitely had the lead. The afternoon was spent with parents before the evening program. Gray Brothers Hall decorations went up in true Mowglis style. The Drama crew put on a spectacular rendition of “Mowglis Back to the Future,” which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The ranks of the Junior Staff doubled with the completion of the Yearling Program. Sixteen young men worked hard to keep the camp running smoothly, doing duties, helping in Industries, and pointing out things like “Panther has no coverage” and “We legally have to get a day off

Henry Hodde, Mr. Conklin, Mr. Bartlett. Front Row: Ben Morgan-Butcher, Carlos Moya. Absent: Nicolas Covarrubias Nicolas Absent: Moya. Carlos Morgan-Butcher, Ben Row: Bartlett. Front Conklin, Mr. Mr. Hodde, Henry every week.” This group of young men liked to do work, and didn’t back down from any task. On occasion we would ask them, “Campfire or work projects?” They always chose the projects. Brett Thomas, a visiting ceramics teacher and Artist in Residence, spent a week at camp teaching the Japenese form of pottery glazing called Raku with his mobile setup. Campers Back Row: Mr. Higgins, Mr. Welch, Victor Geng, Jack Beckford, Jordan Eisenmann, Mikasi Costandine, Max Perozek, Nic Stathos, Peter Zirnkilton, Zirnkilton, Peter Stathos, Nic Perozek, Costandine, Max Mikasi Eisenmann, Jordan Beckford, Jack Geng, Victor Welch, Mr. Higgins, Mr. Row: Back and staff learned some new skills and created their own Mowglis tiles. Woodsmen’s Day was a day to remember! Boys and staff showcased balance and strength on the rope joust, exhibited precision and accuracy with an axe, they put their camping skills

2 3 to the test, and flipped, threw, tossed, and pressed a diverse selection of lumber from the axe yard. And the four Cubs already at camp joined in many valuable roles! An unknowingly wise decision was to have Woodsmen’s Day the day before the full squad of Cubs arrived. Within hours, their presence was known to everyone in the Pack by decibels alone. Den journeyed North to the headwaters of the Connecticut River, paddling in and visiting pristine areas. Again, three groups from Panther took on the Mahoosucs and all conquered the mud and the Notch with great success. Toomai was off to Mt. Cardigan. The Mt. Washington and Gopher Honor Squads embarked on the Presidentials, both summiting Washington with some of the most unpredictable weather in memory. Mowglis hikers visited more rocky summits, while the Racing Crews rowed to Wellington Beach. Cardigan was ascended by all those not on the Red Ribbon Trip, including some visiting photographers. There were a diverse number of campfires by staff, guests, and alumni. Beginning with “How to pack and wear a Mowglis Pack,” the Zamboni brothers surprised Mr. Hart during his exciting motorcycle campfire; a movie and fireworks on the Fourth of July; stump the story teller; learning about staff travels; the Welch vs. Davidge tennis rematch; Mr. Spodick taught about “larping,” and then was taken on by Jordan Eisenman; Mr. Scott Smith presented on mountaineering; a local photographer and Wayne King talked about the Blue Moon and what made this one so special; trip reports; s’mores; Howls; current events; crew cheers and rallies; Mr. Walbridge, Mr. Ringe, and Mr. Bengtson finished out the final three evening programs for the summer. Candle Boat building in the Craft Shop was in high gear, as boys and staff built traditional and unique boats to be launched. One of the largest groups of Graduates and guests attended Graduates Dinner to celebrate and honor the Den Graduates. Final safety and ribbon requirements were earned 2015 Graduates’ Dinner Reception on the final day of Industries in preparation for the Inner Circle Ceremony. The final day was as fast-paced as usual, with packing, tournament finals, and enjoying the final hours on the clear waters of , all before the beloved Candlelight Chapel Service and Candle Boat launching. As we watched the boats make their way out into the darkness, we reflected on all that we have accomplished as individuals, as dorms, and as members of a caring community. As we prepare to strike out into the world as men, let us not forget the lessons we have learned in the Jungle at camp. Before we depart these shores, let us remember the words of Mr. Harvey Russell from the indoor goodnight song: “Above may each boy send forth his light, While songs from Cubs and Pack now wing their flight, Good-Night, Good-Night, Good-Night.” MOWGLIS 2015, WE SALUTE YOU! —W. Shoh and Teddy were right behind me. I looked back to see how far behind. Three seconds later, a tragedy struck. I tripped on a rock and rolled four feet, then slid about six feet. Mr. Bartlett basically carried me to the Lodge as I cried in agony. Mrs. C. took care of me and I wore a big bandage for about two weeks. -BRONSON BROWN

EVERY DAY COUNTS The summer is going by really fast. Crew Week is soon and there are only three weeks of CUBS SWIMMING camp left, so make every day count! I took some of my Cubs swimming out to Waingunga Rock during Soak. It was so cool to -JONAH DORSEY explore the shallow water and dance around on the rocks. I am going out with my friend Peter. I am sure we are going to have fun. All my friends in Den treat each other like family. I love them. I wish I had more time at camp. Two years is just not enough. I want to be a Yearling next year. I love all my friends and this camp. -VICTOR GENG

DEAR HOWL I like camp a lot. You can do a lot of things. Today the Cubs are arriving. I hope they aren’t too loud. -ROBIN SOLIBIEDA

SCARY STORIES This week we heard some scary stories. It was kinda scary. -REMI LAND

FIRST PACK TRIP My first Pack Trip was very fun but a little hard, because every time I would go to sleep Matthew would either roll onto my side and I would have to push him off, or Remi would wake me. Mr. Higgins also got us lost on the last day, but we found our way back. -VAN BEEVER

22 23 WEEK FOUR – THE MAHOOSUCS This week Panther attempted to traverse the Mahoosuc Trail. It was a long and arduous journey, but the satisfaction of completing the longest and steepest 2 miles of the whole Appalachian Trail was well worth it in the end. In other news, Squads are announced today. I hope I have a shot at Gopher Squad, but I won’t be too disappointed if I don’t make it. -WIL OSSELMANN-CHAI

DEN 2015 My Den year has been a great experience. This summer I was around funny and caring people and had the best summer of my camper career. I made Racing Crew, a Squad, Inner Circle, and in a few hours I’m going to finish Swimming, which is also my last Den requirement. I’m also going to Graduate. I couldn’t have asked for any other people to spend my last summer as a camper with than this Den. Den 2015, I salute you! -CARLOS MOYA

FUN WEEK This week was a lot of fun with parents, crew and guitars. My mom brought my guitar on Parents Weekend. People like my guitar. I don’t know who will win the race, but go BVD! -KENNY LITALIEN

TOOMAI 2015 FIRST CREW WEEKEND EXPERIENCE This is my first Crew Weekend and so far I have never experienced anything quite like it. Last night was the pep rally and the bonfire, and the rivalry between the crews was palpable. On FIRST WEEK AT CAMP the mighty Red Crew, boys painted their whole bodies red and brandished flaming swords. This first week of camp has gone by so fast. I have done so many things already that they might Mr. Spodick even bruised his forehead during cheers because he repeatedly hit himself with his not even fit on this paper. So I got to camp real late at night and when I thought I would get some larping shield. I guess his bruises will fade, but his Red Crew pride will never waiver. Go Red! sleep I hear everybody ask “So who is actually packed for the trip tomorrow?” In the morning -MISS SYDNEY I discovered I was just in time for the best trip of the whole summer. Those four days were very exciting and full of activities I didn’t think were possible. Once back at camp, I started talking to Mr. Carothers about how awesome the view is from the Waterfront. Next week is Squads Week, DEAR HOWL and in a few hours we will find out which Mowglis climbers will hike the most feared terrain in Today we put up crepe paper. Me, Liam, and Patrick red-ified Toomai. It was fun. I like taking the White Mountains, Mt. Washington. the Crafts and Camping Industries. -PABLO YESAKI -ALEX MCGREEVY

ROCK CLIMBING Today I went rock climbing with Liam and Ollie, and we climbed the side of a waterfall. It was the best experience I’ve ever had. Thanks, Mr. King! -PAOLO CUNICELLI

RACE DAY It is Race Day and I am so excited. I can’t wait to see who will win (BVD). Camp has gone by so fast, I can’t believe it’s almost over. Hopefully we can get ice cream by the end of the year and I can get my Inner Circle. Overall, it has been a fun year and I am ready for next year. -INAKI REGO Toomai Trip Day 24 25 THE CUBS ARRIVAL “The Cubs are coming, the Cubs are coming!” a random member of the Pack yells, running down the hill from the lodge. Followed by 15 cars full of Cubs, all of them laughing out the windows while they pull into Cubland. The Cubs climb trees, raid the dining hall, and steal the sail boats. This ruckus doesn’t last long as Miss Liz, Mr. Davidge, Mr. Rubin, and Miss Sydney round them all up onto Gray Brothers Field as Miss Liz keeps them in line. Everyone cheers for the Cubs and Miss Liz because we all know that she will make them into real members of the Pack. -ZACH PAIGE

A GREAT SUMMER What a great summer this has been. I’ve had a wonderful, fun, cool, funny, awesome summer. I will miss my friends a lot. I will miss fighting with Mr. O’Connor and Mr. Hurdman. I will miss having fun with the sloth (Jack Sears) and Chuck (Otto). I will miss drawing pictures of the ‘vonsnorkeller’ with Nick Sears. But most of all I will miss the Pack, and even the Cavites. The fun I have here I will never forget, with all the memories I’ve BALOO 2015 made, this is a really special place. I hope to come back for Den next summer! -PATO MARTINEZ

Thanks to the technical genius of the Den, the tetherball was up and running in no time. However, instead of resting atop a metal pole, we installed an indoor tetherball arena. This tetherball court had gone where no tetherball has gone before. It is a true feat of creativity and engineering. -MAX PEROZEK

BACK TO THE FUTURE My last couple of weeks at Mowglis have been very eventful. After a grueling yet extremely productive two-week rehearsal process, “Back to the Future” debuted to a house full of campers and visiting parents. Having watched the campers rehearse tirelessly, I can say that PANTHER 2015 each and every one of them exceed even my greatest expectations. I was amazed by how quickly the boys memorized their lines, especially Liam, George, and Jacob, who had a lot to memorize. Mr. O’Connor also managed to memorize a lot of lines, which was especially SAILING CLUB impressive considering he only got two rehearsals. Even the boys who had fewer lines held Today was Clubs. After the Cubs were dismissed and IMPRESSED Tableboys begin their dirty work, we headed back to Cub Land to work on our duties. For two weeks I am impressed. The Cubs tried things like Sailing, Row Boating, Canoeing, and Swimming all for the first time. It is truly amazing to watch these little gentleman find out what they’re capable of, and create new goals for themselves. Our first Trip Day was upon us, and Mr. Rubin led the way on our hike up Plymouth Mountain, just across the street from camp. It was a hot day and it was very tiring to hike the Mowglis trail, but we got to the top and ate our lunches like champions. We always go the extra mile teaching “Leave No Trace”, and show the Cubs how to pack away their trash. Before leaving, we all went looking around to pick up garbage left by other hikers. The Cubs take pride in knowing that it was a Mowglis trail that got them to the top of a mountain, and they proved that they, too can maintain it like the older boys in the Pack. Before we knew it, time had flown by and we are at the start of Crew Week. The Cubs received their bandanas and split up into our Red and Blue Crews. Next we readied ourselves for our first overnight camp trip to Cliff Island. We packed up our gear and split up into our respective war canoes. Red Crew in the red canoe, and Blue Crew in the blue canoe. Blue beat the Red to Wellington Beach for the first half of the trip, but then Red beat the Blue to the Island. We were then joined by Mr. and Mrs. Robbins and their kids Lizzie and Dru who camped out with us! We ended the long day of adventure around the campfire eating well-deserved s’mores. The following morning was very windy. We went swimming around the island. The boys took turns sharing goggles to jump in and look at the colorful, underwater world, searching eagerly to spot a fish! After all of fun and games, the Junior Staff came to gather our belongings and help canoe us back home. Once Crew Week came to an end and the Red crew oar was raised, we went back to doing more Industries. This time the Cavities explored Tennis, Crafts, and even got squeezed in for Woodworking with Mr. Bengtson! The Cubs also got the chance to go Rock Climbing at the famous Rumney rocks with the very cool Mr. King.

44 45 Our final day trip took us to Lincoln for some mountain biking with Mr. Gulitti. We managed to pedal a distance up the Kancamagus Highway before we found a river suitable for us to cool ourselves off in under the hot afternoon sun. We spent some time splashing about before we headed back for a high-speed downhill sprint. Little did we know that as we were heading home, Yearling History 2015 the Yearling program had completed its final excursion for the year. With the first half of the season winding down, there was already planning and preparing for With safety a primary concern, the Yearlings spent the first two days at camp training in the inevitable transition into adulthood, with their first step becoming Junior Staff. These young wilderness first aid. This rigorous, 18-hour course is the same one provided to the Staff. men were already preparing themselves for the responsibilities of employment. After countless The SOLO program is designed to train us to become more informed first aid providers in roundtable discussions about the future, and several trial runs with Junior Staff duties, it was clear backcountry environments, where supplies are scarce and professional medical help is hours or where the motivations of the group would be taking them. They were ready to shed the image of even days away. Wilderness First Aid grants us the knowledge base in which to identify injuries as a camper and start giving back to Mowglis and become the next generation of fantastic Staff that well as improvise medical solutions from our immediate environments. This has been an integral will impact the lives of countless youngsters for years to come. addition to the Yearling Program, as well as to Mowglis as a whole. It is an investment that provides knowledge and training for the Yearlings to utilize when they ultimately become staff. -ADAM BILLINGSLEA, YEARLING LEADER The Yearling Program is integrated with community-oriented service projects. The boys assisted in trail clearing and maintenance projects around camp, cleaned up Belle Island, assisted at picnic suppers, and, on one occasion, helped get a van unstuck from the mud on a rainy afternoon. In all, the Yearlings have amassed a combined total of over 200 hours of community service. The program is not all certifications and giving back; a main focus of the Yearling program is to have one last hurrah as campers! Mowglis makes sure that their final weeks as campers are filled with new and unique activities, tailored specifically to these boys. Yearlings have final say in trip planning, which allows for a dynamic program catered specifically to each group’s interests. Our first overnight trip took us to Belle Island. A late start to the day allowed us to leave camp just as the persistent rain clouds broke overhead. We cleaned up the island from previous visitors’ use, and left the campground in better condition than we found it…the Mowglis Way! Rock Climbing has recently been reintroduced at Mowglis, and the Yearlings were honored to be the first of the Pack to be guided by Mr. Zach King. Under his qualified and competent leadership, the Yearlings all challenged themselves to rise to greater and greater heights, literally. Yearlings rock climbing We had hardly finished our first day of climbing when we headed out to Zoar Outdoors in western for a three-day white water kayaking clinic. For three intense days we suited up and ventured out on the Deerfield River to try our luck in the rapids. Led by fantastic and entertaining guides, we were taught the art and science of paddling. We also had a great deal of fun on our trips. Spirits were always high and light. By day three all of us had become accomplished river scouts, skilled in the ability to read the rapids, and to choose our own paths forward. It wasn’t long after we had returned to camp that we found ourselves out once again with Mr. King, scaling the rock walls of Rumney and Cannon. The Yearling program was lucky enough to spend several days out climbing new and exciting pitches. With the third and final week ofY earlings approaching, we took a break from all the excitement and decided to have a lazy river trip down the Baker with Mr. Bartlett accompanying. A flat-water experience running contrast to the rapids of Zoar, we still managed to find new and unique ways to keep ourselves entertained and happy. We camped out for a night, and enjoyed the short time we had left together as Yearlings.
