THE MOWGLIS HOWL 2015 THE MOWGLIS HOWL THE ANNUAL OF THE SCHOOL OF THE OPEN VOLUME XCIII 2015 To Keep the Comradeship and the Memory of the Pack 2015 EDITORIAL BOARD: Tommy Greenwell Meg Hurdman Buzz Ringe Holly Taylor Den Panther Nic Stathos Kurt Gassiraro Akela Baloo Jack Sears Reece Harding Toomai Cubs Patrick Jenkins Christoph Osselmann-Chai 1 Pack History 2015 The season started with much anticipation and excitement with the arrival of the boys in late June. Campers and staff from the United States, Mexico, Venezuela, Great Britain, Spain, Germany, France, Poland, Russia, Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and China arrived at camp eager to start the summer. The day started with Opening Day Ceremonies, Industry selections, and veteran campers teaching new campers the Mowglis Way, followed by the first regular Sunday afternoon, and the long-standing tradition of reading from The Jungle Book. It all made for a great start to the season. Staff and campers were off to a familiar quick start, with Industries, open period games, and the first trips departing. Akela hiked to Nancy Brook in the rain, and were treated with seeing some wildlife up close, as a black bear toyed with their food and toothpaste! The Den took two different routes through the Pemigewasset wilderness. Panther split into three groups; two traversing the Franconia ridge and the third getting deeper into the Pemigewasset Wilderness. Baloo crossed the lake in the War Canoes to Cliff Island. Belle Island was visited next by Toomai, and Akela took on their first Pack Trip to the Kinsman Ridge. On trip days a lot of trail clearing took place along the Mowglis trails, while the war canoes (and smaller canoes) explored the lake. The Yearling Program started with a new activity: Wilderness First Aid training. The group took the training seriously and did a great job. The instructor, a veteran combat medic, had nothing but good things to say about the boys. The group proceeded into the woods behind Bear Mountain, only to get lost, and find their way back. Through the various activities—kayaking, The Den of 2015 The biking, hiking, service projects, and rock climbing—the group became a high-functioning unit. And then, all of a sudden, it was Parents’ Weekend. Three weeks in and camp was running smoothly. The grounds were in good shape, the boys were working hard in Industries and began to earn Ribbon requirements. Inspections were starting to shape up, but Akela definitely had the lead. The afternoon was spent with parents before the evening program. Gray Brothers Hall decorations went up in true Mowglis style. The Drama crew put on a spectacular rendition of “Mowglis Back to the Future,” which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The ranks of the Junior Staff doubled with the completion of the Yearling Program. Sixteen young men worked hard to keep the camp running smoothly, doing duties, helping in Industries, and pointing out things like “Panther has no coverage” and “We legally have to get a day off Henry Hodde, Mr. Conklin, Mr. Bartlett. Front Row: Ben Morgan-Butcher, Carlos Moya. Absent: Nicolas Covarrubias Nicolas Absent: Moya. Carlos Morgan-Butcher, Ben Row: Bartlett. Front Conklin, Mr. Mr. Hodde, Henry every week.” This group of young men liked to do work, and didn’t back down from any task. On occasion we would ask them, “Campfire or work projects?” They always chose the projects. Brett Thomas, a visiting ceramics teacher and Artist in Residence, spent a week at camp teaching the Japenese form of pottery glazing called Raku with his mobile setup. Campers Back Row: Mr. Higgins, Mr. Welch, Victor Geng, Jack Beckford, Jordan Eisenmann, Mikasi Costandine, Max Perozek, Nic Stathos, Peter Zirnkilton, Zirnkilton, Peter Stathos, Nic Perozek, Costandine, Max Mikasi Eisenmann, Jordan Beckford, Jack Geng, Victor Welch, Mr. Higgins, Mr. Row: Back and staff learned some new skills and created their own Mowglis tiles. Woodsmen’s Day was a day to remember! Boys and staff showcased balance and strength on the rope joust, exhibited precision and accuracy with an axe, they put their camping skills 2 3 to the test, and flipped, threw, tossed, and pressed a diverse selection of lumber from the axe yard. And the four Cubs already at camp joined in many valuable roles! An unknowingly wise decision was to have Woodsmen’s Day the day before the full squad of Cubs arrived. Within hours, their presence was known to everyone in the Pack by decibels alone. Den journeyed North to the headwaters of the Connecticut River, paddling in and visiting pristine areas. Again, three groups from Panther took on the Mahoosucs and all conquered the mud and the Notch with great success. Toomai was off to Mt. Cardigan. The Mt. Washington and Gopher Honor Squads embarked on the Presidentials, both summiting Washington with some of the most unpredictable weather in memory. Mowglis hikers visited more rocky summits, while the Racing Crews rowed to Wellington Beach. Cardigan was ascended by all those not on the Red Ribbon Trip, including some visiting photographers. There were a diverse number of campfires by staff, guests, and alumni. Beginning with “How to pack and wear a Mowglis Pack,” the Zamboni brothers surprised Mr. Hart during his exciting motorcycle campfire; a movie and fireworks on the Fourth of July; stump the story teller; learning about staff travels; the Welch vs. Davidge tennis rematch; Mr. Spodick taught about “larping,” and then was taken on by Jordan Eisenman; Mr. Scott Smith presented on mountaineering; a local photographer and Wayne King talked about the Blue Moon and what made this one so special; trip reports; s’mores; Howls; current events; crew cheers and rallies; Mr. Walbridge, Mr. Ringe, and Mr. Bengtson finished out the final three evening programs for the summer. Candle Boat building in the Craft Shop was in high gear, as boys and staff built traditional and unique boats to be launched. One of the largest groups of Graduates and guests attended Graduates Dinner to celebrate and honor the Den Graduates. Final safety and ribbon requirements were earned 2015 Graduates’ Dinner Reception on the final day of Industries in preparation for the Inner Circle Ceremony. The final day was as fast-paced as usual, with packing, tournament finals, and enjoying the final hours on the clear waters of Newfound Lake, all before the beloved Candlelight Chapel Service and Candle Boat launching. As we watched the boats make their way out into the darkness, we reflected on all that we have accomplished as individuals, as dorms, and as members of a caring community. As we prepare to strike out into the world as men, let us not forget the lessons we have learned in the Jungle at camp. Before we depart these shores, let us remember the words of Mr. Harvey Russell from the indoor goodnight song: “Above may each boy send forth his light, While songs from Cubs and Pack now wing their flight, Good-Night, Good-Night, Good-Night.” MOWGLIS 2015, WE SALUTE YOU! —W.
