Boys Among Men... Two-year-olds have performed with credit in this race, with Lyric Fantasy (Ire) (Tate Gallery) and Kingsgate Native (Ire) (Mujadil) two whose precocity has led connections to successfully exploit this weight- for-age allowance. Whether Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and Susan Magnier=s Requinto (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) is in that league remains to be seen, but he looks to possess more than his share of the speed of his G2 Queen Mary S. and G1 Phoenix S.-winning dam Damson (Ire) (Entrepreneur {GB}). Her advantage over her peers waned at three, so the decision by David Wachman to make hay this term could be a wise one. He enters on the back of wins in the July 9 Listed Tipperary S. and G3 Molecomb S. at Goodwood July 26. AHe=s fine and I=m not too worried about the ground,@ Wachman told PA Sport. AHe=s won on a slower surface and seems to be pretty adaptable. He obviously gets the weight from the older horses and 2-year-olds have won this before, although it takes a good one to win it.@ Khalid Abdullah=s Bated Breath (GB) (Dansili {GB}) received the plaudit of being the best horse Roger Charlton has trained after his latest second to (Diktat {GB}) in the G1 at Newmarket July 9 and he has always suggested he could be a serious . His first black-type win in Windsor=s Listed Leisure S. over six furlongs May 23 was followed by a fifth on ground which was too testing in the G1 Golden Jubilee S. at Royal Ascot June 18 before his July Cup career-best. Inxile (Ire) (Fayruz {GB}) was the winner of that contest, making it nine black-type wins for his resume, including in Longchamp=s G3 Prix de Saint-Georges May 15. Representing the 3-year-olds are the fillies Margot Did (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) and Wizz Kid (Ire) (Whipper). The former finally delivered on her juvenile promise when registering an impressive win in Sandown=s Listed Scurry S. June 11 and after adding the Listed Land o=Burns S. at Ayr a week later was third third in the July 2 G3 Sandown Sprint. Robert Collet is fresh from watching his stable star (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) take Monday=s G1 Prix Jacques le Marois and Wizz Kid showed the raw material for a test like this when besting Prohibit (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) in the G2 Prix du Gros-Chene at Chantilly June 5.

www.coolmore.com P TDN HEADLINE NEWS • 8/19/11 • PAGE 4 of 14 • thoroughbreddailynews.com RESULTS The Girls in Blue... Few fillies are able to win Classics over a mile and a mile and a half, but of the recent members of that sex to do so it is interesting to note that two were representatives of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Both his homebred (GB) and German acquisition (Ger) (Zinaad {GB}) managed to complete the G1 1000 Guineas- double, with the former even going on to add the St Leger to become a Fillies= Triple Crown titleholder back in 1985. Dettori Performs his Famous Flying Dismount from Blue Bunting Blue Bunting Racing Post/Whitaker could arguably have emulated that pair with better luck, as exaggerated hold-up tactics off a moderate pace undid her chance in the June 3 Epsom Classic. Salt was rubbed in the wound at the end of that race, with Dettori mistaking the winning post and surrendering third place in the process. Bouncing back at The Curragh, the grey pulled the iron out of the fire much as she had at Newmarket to swamp the likely winner Banimpire (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) in the shade of the post and garner the Oaks she had been favored for six weeks earlier. All the early signs so far at this meeting point to the middle-distance races being hard work and so Blue Bunting=s stable companion Rumh (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) was not asked to set a breakneck pace early on, but Dettori was still content to wait in rear as several pulled for their heads in the pack. After the final turn, virtually the whole field was off the bridle with only Wonder of Wonders traveling kindly as she was committed by Seamus Heffernan. She soon started to labor on the ground and by the quarter pole, both Vita Nova and Tom Queally and the eventual winner had loomed with intent on either side. Staying on just the better on the run to the line as Wonder of Wonders backed out of the bout, Blue Bunting refused to buckle despite the intimidating presence of the year-older Vita Nova. Cont. p5

Yorkshire Oaks cont. Racing Manager Simon Crisford revealed the St Leger as a likely target afterwards. AI think her toughness matches her brilliance, because when the second came to give her a hard time in the final quarter mile she was very resolute and very honest and was always holding her,@ he said. AShe=s a fantastic filly, because she can perform on such a range of distances and ground--it was fast at Newmarket when she won the Guineas, soft at The Curragh and sticky today--and a great all-rounder and top-notch filly. She just does enough and although I wouldn=t describe her as lazy she keeps a little bit up her sleeve for when the knock-out is needed. I think for the rest of the season, we have some great races to look forward to including the G1 St Leger [at Doncaster Sept.10] because a mile and six should really suit her. We=ll see how she is over the next ten days, but that is a distinct possibility. There is every good reason to go for the last Classic and Sheikh Mohammed wants to keep options open. He has won it with a filly before in Oh So Sharp, so it wouldn=t be anything new but it=s nice to go to Town Moor with one like this. The Breeders= Cup race for fillies and mares and the Japanese race on Nov. 13 (G1 Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup, 2200 meters) come into the equation and so she could be busy right to the end of the year. Because she goes on all types of ground, it makes the decision as to where to go more complicated, but I think right now we=ve got to see whether she will be our representative in the St Leger. Earlier in the year, we would have thought she would almost definitely stay in training, but we=ll have to see how she is at the end of the year before we decide on that. It=s been a great team effort and all credit to them.@ Sir Henry Cecil, who had saddled the one-two in the G1 Juddmonte International 24 hours earlier, was almost celebrating a second Group 1 of the week with Vita Nova and told PA Sport, AShe ran a fabulous race. I=m really pleased with her. I like winning, but you can=t take anything away from her as there was a long way back to the third. She=ll stay in training next year and I like spreading her races out. We might look at the G2 Pride S. at Ascot on Champions= Day [Oct. 15] over a mile and a half.@

Best Terms opened her account at Windsor in her first go Apr. 18 and doubled up in a May 13 conditions heat at Newbury next time. She took the challenge of pattern company in the June 15 G2 Queen Mary S. at Royal Ascot, keeping her unbeaten with a narrow verdict, and exhibited blistering speed here to unleash a career-best effort at the expense of highly regarded rivals under a three-pound penalty for a latest success. The bay homebred pinged the lids and seized immediate control, settling into a smooth rhythm at a high tempo. Gathered together in readiness for the inevitable challenges approaching the final quarter mile, only G3 Anglesey S. victress Fire Lily was able to take up the cudgels inside the final quarter mile, but was unable to land a significant blow. She was readily disposed of as Best Terms kept on strongly under minimal urging in the closing stages and the Hannon trainee was not fully extended to easily maintain her perfect tally. AWe really didn=t know how good she was beforehand and I=m not sure we do now after that performance,@ admitted assistant trainer Richard Hannon Jr. AI thought her 11-1 odds were slightly disrespectful of her chance and, with a penalty, she has done it very well. She hit the gates extremely well and [jockey] Richard [Hughes] felt she was never going to get beaten for a yard. It is very encouraging and I suppose all roads lead to the [G1] Cheveley Park [S. at Newmarket Sept. 24] as that=s the only race for her now. She=s a May 22 foal and was only just two when she won at Royal Ascot so we=ll deal with next year when it arrives.@ Hughes added, AWe always though she needed six furlongs and she was very good today. LIKELY LAD Lilbourne Lad faces the age-old prospect of having to pay for his precocity and give weight away all round in today=s G2 Gimcrack S., having earned a penalty with his success in the six-furlong G2 Railway S. at The Curragh June 26. Subsequently only fourth back over that track and trip in the Aug. 7 G1 Phoenix S., he hails from the four-times winning Richard Hannon stable and that trainer said, ALilbourne Lad has proved a real star for us and he ran another cracker in the G1 Phoenix S. at The Curragh last time, only feeling the pinch in the last half-furlong. He has the three-pound penalty for winning the Railway, which does not help, but you could set your watch by him as he never lets us down, and I am sure that he=ll be right there at the finish again.@ B Fifty Two is one of the more exposed types here, but his experience could be useful with the ground on the easy side. No match for the impressive Dabirsim (Fr) (Hat Trick {Jpn}) when runner-up in Deauville=s G3 Prix de Cabourg over this trip last time July 31, he did have Lilbourne Lad back in second when taking a Newmarket conditions event May 14.
