mind will want to trick you, to tell you that you need to listen because it has vital information to keep you safe. Don’t buy into this. You need to be in the "here and now" with your horse, and there is no quicker route there than through your senses.

• Generate an image. What kind of a ride are you trying to achieve? Maybe it’s a “soft” ride. In this case, you could think about marshmallows, feather pillows or fluffy clouds. If you want to ride more aggressively, try conjuring up a picture of a charging rhino or a proud lion. What if you need to be brave? How about a well-armored knight riding into battle or the lion from The Wizard of Oz?

• Play a sound bite. If there was a soundtrack that would best fit the ride or kind of mood you would like to be in, what would it be? Hear what- ever you like in your head – country, hard rock or whatever. No one will ever know what tunes you are playing in your head, but they’ll see the smile on your face and the confidence in your ride.

• Develop a cue phrase. Remember Muhammad Ali’s famous line, “Float like a but- terfly, sting like a bee”? This helped him get in the mood to fight, to be the best. What could your line be? Don’t confuse this with your left-brain talk. It’s just a simple phrase that packs a big emo- tional punch. Some examples might include, “Go hard or go home,” and "Reins to the right” (right brain, that is). —April Clay IN THE KNOW For a Good Cause w If you love to watch cutting horses, experienced and may own their own and also like to see celebrities live cutting horses. “You must meet all things with equanimity. You win, you’re happy; you lose, you’re disappointed QHN Photo File – but don’t let either one of them carry you away.”

The wise words above were quoted by Buster Welch, one of the cut- ting horse industry’s true champions, in and out of the arena, and the first rider to claim a National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Futurity Open Championship – 52 years ago, in 1962 in Sweetwater, Texas, riding Money’s Glo to a final winning score of 224. A five-time Futurity winner (1962, 1963, 1966, 1971, 1977), Welch has been called the Paul Bunyan of the cowboy world – bigger than life and every bit as entertaining – with one central difference – most of the Buster stories are true. The native Texan, who dropped out of school and ran away from home at the age of 14, grew up to become one of the most celebrated horsemen and cattle- men of the 20th century. Welch worked as a breeding and training consul- tant for the renowned King Ranch in Kingsville, Texas, from the mid-70s until the early 80s, before he and his wife, Sheila, returned to West Texas. There, Buster continued to train horses and build the family holdings, which at one time included more than 60,000 acres of leased and deeded land on which Welch ran approximately 1,500 cow-calf pairs on five dif- ferent ranches.
