Whether you’re looking for a road trip adventure, a local rodeo or even a vacation to Las Vegas in December, below is a gathering of information, tips and links to help you plan your rodeo visit. IF YOU’RE A TRiviA NUT, you might appreciate some nuggets of rodeo facts from Megan Winterfeldt at the The ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. • The first Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo was held on September 23, 1897, and netted $26.12. The 2016 Cheyenne Frontier Days spanned 10 performances and netted almost $1.5 million. • Rodeo celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2019. The first rodeo was hosted in 1869 in Deer Trail, Colorado. The winner was Englishman Emilnie Gradenshire, and he won a new suit of clothes. • It takes 1,200 tons of dirt to create the 12- to 15-inch depth on the arena floor at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. It takes an additional 800 tons to create the stalls and stock pens outside the arena. • Trevor Brazile is the winningest cowboy ever, with 24 PRCA world championships. He is followed by Guy Allen, with 18, and Jim Shoulders, with 16. • There have been 326 inductees in the The ProRodeo Hall of Fame since the museum was opened in 1979. These include both two- and four-legged contestants. • The 1973 film The Great American Cowboy directed by Keith Merrill focused on the All-Around Gold Buckle race between Larry Mahan and Phil Lyne, both Hall of Fame inductees. (PBR): Attention Randy Bernard~CEO of PBR and Ty Murray~PBR President I am writing to urge you to eliminate the presence of ALL tobacco sponsors and messages during your bull riding events. Professional bull riding has moved into ranks of world-class sports and the eyes of the public are now fixed on the PBR athletes, who serve as heroes and role models for youth across the United States. Simply put, children emulate the actions of adults they admire, copying their habits-both good and bad. I have been involved with the sport of bull riding for over 20 years as an announcer, broadcast and print journalist, radio personality, spectator and, most recently, as a spokesperson for Buck Tobacco Sponsorship’s National Tobacco-Free Rodeo Project. The Buck Tobacco program targets rodeos and bull riding events throughout the country with requests to eliminate tobacco sponsorship. (www.bucktobacco.org). I have visited with over 150,000 children across the country to talk with them about the sport of bull riding, along with the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle. Tobacco is not part of a healthy lifestyle and should not be part of bull riding. Numerous churches, schools and community organizations across the country are joining me in the pledge to support a tobacco-free PBR. Many of these individuals regularly attend PBR events with their children, and are disturbed by the tobacco messaging that is reaching kids at your otherwise family-friendly event. Would you encourage or allow your child to use tobacco products? Medical research chronicles the increased likelihood of heart disease and cancer as a result of the use of tobacco products.

    Mayor Kathy Taylor Proclaims May 13 “Jim Shoulders Day”; Honors Tulsa Rodeo Legend During Jim Shoulders Great Western Weekend TULSA, Okla., May 12, 2006 -- Tulsa Mayor Kathy Taylor has proclaimed May 13, 2006 as “Jim Shoulders Day” in the City of Tulsa, honoring the Tulsa native and Oklahoma rodeo legend who will turn 78 on Saturday during the Jim Shoulders Great Western Weekend. Tulsa is hosting the championship finals of the Wrangler ProRodeo Winter Tour -- known as the Pace Picante ProRodeo Chute-out -- as well as a Dodge Xtreme Bulls 2006 Ride Hard Tour stop and a western trade fair during the three-day festival that starts on Friday and ends Sunday. The proclamation will be presented to Shoulders Friday during the opening ceremonies of the Dodge Xtreme Bulls Ride Hard Tour event at 8 p.m. tomorrow night at the Tulsa Convention Center Arena. “Jim Shoulders is a national treasure and has represented the best of Tulsa and Oklahoma his entire life,” said Taylor. “He personifies all of our best attributes -- hard work, love of family, steadfast faith and rock solid loyalty.
