A total of 18 seniors will be playing their final game for the Warriors on Christmas Day in the ConAgra Foods Hawai‘i Bowl. CONAGRA FOODS HAWAII BOWL - UH’S FOURTH BOWL BID The Warriors posted a 9-3 record in 2001 and did not receive an invitation to a No Name (Pos, Ht, Wt, Hometown/Last School) bowl game, but that has changed this season with the newly created ConAgra 55 o Alapai Andrews Foods Hawai‘i Bowl. The win over San Jose State on Nov. 2, 2002 marked the (OL, 6-0, 298, Honolulu/Punahou School) seventh of the season for the Warriors and prompted the nation’s first bowl invitation of 2002. The 81 o Omar Bennett (WR, 5-11, 178, Los Angeles, CA/Laney CC) ConAgra Foods Hawai‘i Bowl, owned and operated by ESPN, is UH’s fourth overall bowl game 13 d Keith Bhonapha appearance and second under head coach June Jones. Hawai‘i posts a 2-1 record in bowl games, (DB, 5-9, 197, Oakland, CA/Skyline HS) 1-0 under Jones. The Warriors made their bowl game debut in the 1989 Jeep Eagle Oahu Bowl (head 54 d Chris Brown coach Bob Wagner) that resulted in a 33-13 loss to Michigan State. In 1992, the Warriors beat Illinois, (LB, 6-1, 255, Kahaluu, Oahu/Damien HS) 27-17, in the Thrifty Car Rental Holiday Bowl in San Diego, CA (head coach Bob Wagner). In 1999, 23 d Sean Butts Hawai‘i beat Oregon State, 23-17, in the Jeep Oahu Bowl (head coach June Jones). (DB, 6-3, 202, Culver City, CA/Culver City HS) 18 o Justin Colbert (WR, 5-8, 170, Rialto, CA/A.B. Miller HS) COLBERT REACHES 2,000-YARD MARK/MAKING MARK IN UH RECORD BOOKS 58 d Laanui Correa Wide receiver Justin Colbert (5-7, 178, Sr, Rialto, CA/A.B. Miller HS), the lone returning starter at (DL, 6-5, 264, Honolulu/UNLV) receiver, became the school’s sixth player to reach the 2,000-yard mark in receiving with his 120 53 o Lui Fuata yards against Nevada on Oct. 12, 2002. Colbert has started the last 37 games for the Warriors (OL, 6-2, 315, Waianae, Oahu/Lahainaluna HS) and is currently third on UH’s career receiving list with 203 receptions for 2,747 yards and 12 22 o Josh Galeai touchdowns in 44 games played. Colbert has also reached the century mark four times this sea- (RB, 5-11, 236, Oceanside, CA/Palomar College) son (four of the last eight games) and currently has five 100-yard games in his career. In his last 88 o Neal Gossett eight games, Colbert has caught 61 passes for 819 yards and three touchdowns (compared to 12 (WR, 5-10, 177, Mililani, Oahu/Waipahu HS) 27 o Greg Kleidon catches for 210 yards in his first four games of 2002). At Fresno State, Colbert caught for a (P, 6-0, 190, Los Angeles, CA/Santa Monica College) career-high 188 yards and a touchdown on 11 receptions. In the final regular season game 65 o Vince Manuwai against San Diego State, Colbert broke the school record for most career catches (203) surpass- (OL, 6-2, 309, Honolulu/Farrington HS) ing former Warrior and current Denver Bronco Ashley Lelie’s record of 194. He also holds the 49 o Mat McBriar sixth spot in all-purpose yardage with 2,921 career yards and is currently ranked second in the (P, 6-0, 221, East Brighton, Australia/Brighton Grammar School) WAC and 16th nationally in receptions per game (6.38) and third in the WAC and 25th nationally 24 o Thero Mitchell in receiving yards per game (88.0). He also currently has 83 receptions this season and needs (RB, 5-10, 210, Bothell, WA/Bothell HS) two to break Lelie’s season record of 84 set in 2001. 10 d Pisa Tinoisamoa (LB, 6-0, 218, Vista, CA/Vista HS) 95 d Colin Wills OWENS RETURNS AFTER FOUR WEEKS WITH SPRAINED KNEE (DL, 6-1, 244, Omaha, NE/Burke HS) Wide receiver Chad Owens (5-9, 177, So, Honolulu), in his second game back after suffering a 7 o Shawn Withy-Allen sprained right knee Oct. 12 against Nevada, has served as UH’s primary return man in the last (QB, 6-4, 219, Kailua, Oahu/Kalaheo HS) three games. Owens, who was injured after making his first catch of the evening, a 50-yard 44 d Matt Wright touchdown, had five kickoffs for 118 yards and six punts for 81 yards against Cincinnati. His 38- (LB, 6-1, 225, Sr, Kailua, Oahu/Iolani School) yard punt return in the second quarter put the ball at the Cincinnati 26-yard line and helped the Warriors tie the score at seven. The Roosevelt graduate is currently third on the team with 41 2002 WAC PRESEASON receptions for 504 yards and two touchdowns (he led the Warriors in both yards and receptions MEDIA POLL before the injury) and played his best game of the season having caught for a career-high 182 (first place votes in parenthesis) yards on 11 receptions against SMU. • Get Downfield Before the Ball Lands, Pos- Mation Would Be Required to Properly Appropriate Sibly Reducing Return Opportunities, Thus Increasing Blame for These Mishaps
Journal of Sports Analytics 4 (2018) 201–213 201 DOI 10.3233/JSA-180164 IOS Press A flight-based metric for evaluating NFL punters R. Drew Pasteur∗, Emily Howerton, Preston Pozderac, Stuart Young and Jonathan Moore Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, College of Wooster, Wooster, OH, USA Abstract. Common evaluation metrics for NFL punters are outdated, failing to account for field position and touchbacks. Using detailed information on each punt of the 2013 season, a nonlinear model is developed, using these factors alongside hang time, coverage quality, and environmental conditions. This leads to punter evaluation metrics using expected points added (EPA), both in total and per punt. The persistence of punting skill is explored, and the relationships between performance and salary are discussed. Keywords: Punting, player evaluation, expected points, NFL, American football 1.
