skaters will meet the world at the Gangneung Oval and the Gangneung Ice Arena in PyeongChang, Korea. Speed Skating Canada’s highly-skilled coaching and IST staff will get those athletes to that start line in a position to win. Our job now is to support them any way we can; letting them do what as athletes and coaches they do best. To the staff and volunteers who have worked over the past three years to get athletes ready, the speed skating family in Canada says thank-you. Your Board of Directors spent the last year focused not just on PyeongChang, but also on the future of our sport. We have worked to make our sport stronger, not only for skaters in 2022 and (we hope in Calgary) in 2026, but for everyone who wants to spend their lives with the skating sport we love. This has meant changes to Speed Skating Canada. These have been difficult; good people have left. Speed Skating Canada benefited from the work of Ian Moss and Brian Rahill. In 2016/17 your Board has weighed the tough decisions and sought to find the best way to go past 2018. Speed Skating Canada’s staff and volunteer team have worked through this change, including the volunteers of the Officials Development Committee, the Competition Development Committee, the Coaching Development Committee, and the Sport Development Committee (formerly Club & Membership). We also recognize the work done by the Youth Development Fund Committee, the Finance and Audit Committee, and the Nominations Committee. Lastly, the High Performance Committees (Short Track and Long Track) have undergone changes this year, and face another, demanding Olympic team selection season. They serve us well. Change is hard. It comes with disruption, with challenges, and with frustrations. Your Board says an emphatic thank-you to SSC staff and volunteers who have worked through these changes and delivered programs and services this past year. We recognize Cynthia Dunford, Speed Skating Canada’s Director of Finance and Administration. She has been a steady hand, working with the new CEO. She has watched finances with a keen eye, and has been critical to our ability to present a surplus financial year. Janice Dawson has contributed much to sport development. Janice was key in Speed Skating Canada’s hosting of an ISU Short Track World Cup in November 2016 in Calgary and the ISU World Sprint Championships in February 2017, two very successful events. We put two well-organized speed skating events in front of Calgary’s Bid Exploration Committee. Danielle Gelineau in the national office has probably spoken to all of you in navigating the Member Management System. Thank you to Danielle
