These ratings will apply for qualification purposes for races closing on the Tuesday of publication through to the following Monday. Amendments to these qualifying ratings will also be published, for information, on the Information area of the Racing Administration Internet site. HANDICAPS WITH SPLIT ENTRY STAKE FEES For those Handicap races which have a split entry stake fee dependent on the Handicap rating of the horse, i.e. £xx stake if the horse is rated aa or higher, or £yy stake if the horse is rated bb or lower with £zz extra if the horse is declared to run The relevant stake fee shall be determined by the Handicap rating used to calculate the weight for each horse entered in the race in question, and not by the published qualifying rating, if any.

    Betfair Media Release for immediate release, Wednesday, January 30, 2019 Waiting Patiently headlines entries for thrilling £150,000 G1 Betfair Ascot Chase Northern-trained superstar Waiting Patiently is among the excellent entries for the £150,000 G1 Betfair Ascot Chase, staged over two miles and five furlongs at Ascot on Saturday, February 16, details of which are revealed today. Waiting Patiently, the 5/4 favourite with Betfair and trained by Ruth Jefferson in Malton, North Yorkshire, came of age in the 2018 G1 Betfair Ascot Chase, when he defeated defending champion Cue Card by just under three lengths to register his first success at the highest level. After missing the rest of last season due to injury, Waiting Patiently has been seen out once this term in the G1 King George VI Chase at Kempton Park on Boxing Day. In what was his first attempt over three miles, he did not have the chance to prove his stamina after being badly hampered and unseating regular rider Brian Hughes at the ninth fence. That was the eight-year-old’s first defeat over fences – he had won his previous six starts over the bigger obstacles. 10-time champion jump trainer Paul Nicholls has won the Betfair Ascot Chase three times, including with the great Kauto Star in 2008, and is going after a record-equalling fourth victory in the G1 race with G1 Melling Chase victor Politologue (5/2) and Cyrname (8/1), an impressive course and distance winner last time out. Politologue defeated Charbel (Kim Bailey, 10/1) narrowly in the G2 Christy 1965 Chase over the course and distance at Ascot in November before finishing fourth in the G1 King George VI Chase, while Cyrname galloped his rivals into the ground when taking a valuable handicap chase at Ascot by 21 lengths on January 19 under Harry Cobden.

    Continuity and Diversity in Nineteenth Century and Contemporary Racehorse Training Laura Jayne Westgarth Manchester Metropolitan University Thesis presented in fulfilment of an MA by Research September 2014 2 Continuity and Diversity in Nineteenth Century and Contemporary Racehorse Training Abstract: This thesis explores stability and diversity in the approaches taken to training National Hunt racehorses by nineteenth-century trainers and those of the modern day. The work first explores horseracing as a sport in the nineteenth and early twentieth century, including consideration of social class, gambling, and the structures surrounding horseracing, particularly the operation of the Jockey Club, as a means of establishing the way in which horseracing operated in this period. This part of the thesis also explains how racing employees operated, the costs of training, and how the role of the trainer evolved from grooms training for their employer into that of public trainers with large racing yards. This section is followed by consideration of the training methods employed during the nineteenth century, with a focus on the practices of purging, sweating, exercise, diet, and physicing, as well as explaining how racing yards were managed. The key research findings of the thesis are then presented in two chapters, the first of which discusses the way in which 'communities of practice' have operated in training stables, both in the context of the nineteenth century and in the context of contemporary racing. These 'communities' allow the passing on of knowledge through generations of racing trainers, through kinship as well as through close working relationships. Some biographical examples of both historical and contemporary trainers and their kinship groups/communities are presented.

    NTF Weekend Notes – 2018 Aintree GN Festival Day 1 - Thursday 1.45 Manifesto Novices’ Chase – Grade 1 Novices’ Chase – 2m 4f – Good to Soft – 6 ran 1st – FINAIN’S OSCAR I really think they need to get him over 3m now, something which should help his jumping. For me he just seems to struggle at his fences when they are at or near racing speed over 2m – 2m5f trips but the naturally slower speed they’d be tracking along at over 3m+ should just allow him to measure his fences that much better. He can certainly jump when he wants to, as evidenced by his leap at the final fence, and with 3 G1’s now in the bank he’s clearly got plenty of class to go to war with, they just need to get his trip sorted out. 2nd – RENE’S GIRL I was surprised by this one here as I thought she would be found out upped to G1 level but she put in a fine performance and she’ll be worth keeping an eye on if she head’s back down the handicap route, providing there is little to no movement from her current mark of OR 144. 4th – CYRNAME Seems to be turning into a typical post-Kauto/Denman Nicholls horse (bar the odd exception of course), one that does really well in G2’s and ‘easier’ early season G1’s but then comes up short in the proper G1 races. He’s possibly also at his very best going right-handed (0/3 LH – 3/6 RH).
