It is a serious inherited disease in that it causes the breakdown of the hoof wall, and whilst sometimes it can be managed in a good environment, it is incurable and often results in the affected pony having to be intensively managed (a welfare issue) or having to be put down. It is not white line disease, and it is not caused by the environment. It is caused by the mating of two carrier ponies each having a particular single mutated gene, resulting in a 1 in 4 chance of the resulting foal being affected. An affected pony cannot be cured. The Connemara Pony Breeders’ Society request that breeders act mindfully and only breed from either: both non-carrying parents (N/N x N/N) or only one carrier parent to a non-carrying parent (N/HWSD x N/N). It is hoped this gene in time will be bred out of the herd. A carrier pony will show no clinical symptoms. Carriers must not be totally excluded from breeding as this will only further contract the gene pool; the sole purpose of testing is to have the knowledge to avoid matings that could result in affected foals being born. It is desirable that all Connemara colts should be tested for HWSD and that all foals for registration should be tested. Breeders are strongly recommended to test any stallions or mares with which they intend to breed. With this knowledge of carriers, the disease can be managed and hopefully eradicated within a few years. It is an inexpensive DNA test readily available. For further information please refer to www.cpbs.ie which explains the problem in full, or follow the link to download or complete a CPBS test application form: https://cpbs.ie/hwsd-form/. CPBS testing kits are offered at a special price of 15 euros until 1 September, 2020. For this special price to apply kits must be returned to Weatherbys Scientific Laboratory before 11 September or they will not be processed. Thereafter they will revert to the price of 35 euros each for CBPS members and 45 euros each for non-members. • Loughs Carra, Mask and Corrib; Resources, Borders and Passageways
Loughs Carra, Mask and Corrib; resources, borders and passageways A National Heritage Week 2020 Project by the Joyce Country and Western Lakes Heritage Network Introduction: Loughs Carra, Mask and Corrib are all connected with all their waters draining into the Atlantic Ocean. Their origins lie in the surrounding bedrock and the moving ice that dominated the Irish landscape. Today they are landscape icons, angling paradise and drinking water reservoirs but they have also shaped the communities on their shores. This project, the first of the Joyce Country and Western Lakes Heritage Network, explores the relationships that the people from the local towns and villages have had with these lakes, how they were perceived, how they were used and how they have been embedded in their history. The project consists of a series of short articles on various subjects that were composed by heritage officers of the local community councils and members of the local historical societies. They will dwell on the geological origin of the lakes, evidence of the first people living on their shores, local traditions and historical events and the inspiration that they offered to artists over the years. These articles are collated in this document for online publication on the Joyce Country and Western Lakes Geopark Project website (www.joycecountrygeoparkproject.ie) as well as on the website of the various heritage societies and initiatives of the local communities. Individual articles – some bilingual as a large part of the area is in the Gaeltacht – will be shared over social media on a daily basis for the duration of National Heritage Week.

  • Field Day Review 62
Field Day Review 62 The Journey West The Journey West Patrick Joyce1 At the edge Josef Koudelka called this photograph (Fig. 1), Irlande 1972. It is part of a collection of his work entitled Exiles. The three men kneel at the summit of Croagh Patrick, a site of Christian pilgrimage for over a millennium and a half, and before then, for perhaps twice that time, it has been a sacred place. Below the summit, and in the background, is Clew Bay, the Atlantic Ocean speckled with Clew’s many islands, drowned drumlins marooned by geological time. In the photographs that make up Exiles, Koudelka photographed the margins of Europe, margins which are partly geographical, for Croagh Patrick is at the outermost western limits of Europe, and partly social. He repeatedly returns to images of gypsies, one of Europe’s two great symbols of what it is to be at the margins of an acceptable social life from which they are exiled. Indeed, Koudelka was himself an exile, having fled from Prague after the Russian invasion of 1968, following which he took up a relentlessly peripatetic professional life as a photographer, much of it as a stateless person. To be at a margin, or on a border, is to be both inside and outside, or it is to be neither Fig. 1: Ireland. Croagh Patrick Pilgrimage, 1972. As it has become more popular in recent years, I have often been asked what are the best parts of the road to ride. Here are my top ten, in order of north to south. Other people may have other thoughts about places that are equally as good, but these are my favourites that I have ridden and seen for myself. 2. • 20-Year Strategy for the Irish Language 2010 - 2030 Progress Report: 2010 - 2015 Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources
20-Year Strategy for the Irish Language 2010 - 2030 Progress Report: 2010 - 2015 Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources During the period covered by this report, the Department has adhered to its commitments set out in its implementation plan under the Strategy and in accordance with the Broadcasting Act 2009. In 2009, with the enactment of the Broadcasting Act 2009, the allocation of licence fee money to the Broadcasting Funding Scheme, of which TG4 is one of the main beneficiaries, was increased from 5% to 7%. The Good Friday Agreement provided that the British Government would work with the relevant British and Irish broadcasting authorities to make TG4 more widely available in Northern Ireland. Following the switchover to digital television in 2012, TG4’s coverage has reached 94% in Northern Ireland. RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta is also being provided on the Northern Ireland Freeview DTT network. In autumn 2014, TG4 launched an upgraded/redesigned TG4 website with major new features for national and global users. An IOS app for iPad and iPhone and a Smart TV app, available for download to all major platforms, was also launched. This ensures access to Irish language programming via multiple devices for a worldwide audience. With the launch in October 2015 of a book and app based on the television series Saol faoi Shráid, TG4 has delivered a multi-platform Irish language puppet series for children. In addition to these formats, TG4 has provided extended children's access to the series with a live puppet show, which toured nationwide and featured in Baboró Kids Festival 2015.
