It is a serious inherited disease in that it causes the breakdown of the hoof wall, and whilst sometimes it can be managed in a good environment, it is incurable and often results in the affected pony having to be intensively managed (a welfare issue) or having to be put down. It is not white line disease, and it is not caused by the environment. It is caused by the mating of two carrier ponies each having a particular single mutated gene, resulting in a 1 in 4 chance of the resulting foal being affected. An affected pony cannot be cured. The Connemara Pony Breeders’ Society request that breeders act mindfully and only breed from either: both non-carrying parents (N/N x N/N) or only one carrier parent to a non-carrying parent (N/HWSD x N/N). It is hoped this gene in time will be bred out of the herd. A carrier pony will show no clinical symptoms. Carriers must not be totally excluded from breeding as this will only further contract the gene pool; the sole purpose of testing is to have the knowledge to avoid matings that could result in affected foals being born. It is desirable that all Connemara colts should be tested for HWSD and that all foals for registration should be tested. Breeders are strongly recommended to test any stallions or mares with which they intend to breed. With this knowledge of carriers, the disease can be managed and hopefully eradicated within a few years. It is an inexpensive DNA test readily available. For this special price to apply kits must be returned to Weatherbys Scientific Laboratory before 11 September or they will not be processed.
