CFC ANNOUNCES PARTICIPANTS FOR THE SLAIGHT MUSIC RESIDENCY

Four talented creators chosen to participate in new initiative, focused on building stronger Canadian onscreen musical talent

TORONTO, September 25, 2012 – CFC (Canadian Film Centre) is pleased to welcome the four participants of the inaugural SLAIGHT MUSIC RESIDENCY.

The final selection committee was comprised of the program’s Chair, Jim Cuddy (Blue Rodeo), mega-hit songwriter// performer Marc Jordan (Josh Groban, , Cher, Bette Midler, , Diana Ross), filmmaker/lyricist Michael McGowan (Score: A Hockey Musical), composer/conductor Glenn Morley (One Magic Christmas), Emmy Award-nominated composer Amin Bhatia (“Flashpoint”) and Oscar-nominated and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Larry Weinstein (Rhombus Media).

After an extensive selection process, the four participants of The Slaight Music Residency include:

• Jeff Morrow, a -based composer and musician whose credits include “Crash Canyon” (Teletoon/MTV), “The Passionate Eye” (CBC) and “The Fifth Estate” (CBC). He has also contributed music to “The Bridge” (CBS/CTV). He is currently scoring “Rocket Monkeys” (Teletoon) and a feature-length documentary about the Attawapiskat First Nation with director Victoria Lean. Morrow holds a Bachelor of Music from McGill University, and works as an in-house composer at the Eggplant Collective.

• , a composer and producer, Kobakov has seven feature film scores to his credit, including The Samaritan, Cold Blooded, and Young People Fucking. His work for Cold Blooded won the Audience Award at the 2012 Fantasia Film Festival. Kobakov has also created vivid soundtracks for short films, TV and dozens of Canadian and international commercials. A key player in Toronto's , Kobakov has created transcendent string for such artists as Metric, Stars, , k-os and more. His solo debut, , was released in 2010 to glowing critical acclaim and featured guest vocalists Emily Haines and Tunde Adebimpe.

• Allie Hughes, is a songwriter and performer. A classical voice/piano student of Michigan’s Interlochen Arts Academy and a graduate of Sheridan College’s Musical Theatre Performance program, Hughes was a finalist on the CBC series “Triple Sensation”. Her acting credits include "Boys In the Photograph" (Mirvish), "King" (Showcase), "Being Erica" (CBC) and "" (CTV). Hughes has co-written songs with Canadian Ron Sexsmith, co-founder , and many others. Her songs have been featured in "Rookie Blue" (Global), “Saving Hope” (CTV) and the yet-to-be released independent film Love Me.

• Chris Bartos, a songwriter, composer and producer, studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, before returning to Toronto to continue writing and producing for a variety of platforms including film and television. Bartos has also appeared on several albums including his own 2009 Dukestreet release “FORT WILLIAM”

The Slaight Music Residency launched on Monday September 24th with a Master Class on music and film with Academy Award-nominated filmmaker and CFC Founder and Chair Emeritus , and award-winning filmmaker Bruce McDonald. Other esteemed guests and industry professionals on board include: internationally-acclaimed Mychael Danna (Composer Chair), critically-acclaimed filmmaker Atom Egoyan, musician/songwriter/composer Jim Vallance, best known as the songwriting partner of Canadian international recording artist , award-winning film and TV composer Christophe Beck (The Hangover, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”), music composer, Paul Hoffert, C.M., music composer/conductor Lesley Barber, award- winning executive producer , songwriter Christopher Ward and singer/songwriter/performer Chantal Kreviazuk.

The SLAIGHT FAMILY MUSIC LAB, supported by The Slaight Family Foundation, offers the nine-month Slaight Music Residency as well as two unique business opportunities to incite greater awareness and inclusion of Canadian musical talent in the onscreen industries.
