TEAM NOTES:

OFFENSE FROM THE DEFENSE Brian Dumoulin’s clutch game-tying shorthanded goal midway through the third period on Saturday helped Pittsburgh salvage a point against the Oilers. The goal was his first of the year, and first-career shorthanded goal. Over his last six games played, he has four points (1G-3A) and is plus-12.

Dumoulin has emerged as one of the most steady, solid, blueliners in the league. His plus-11 is tied for first in the NHL, and since the beginning of the 2018-19 campaign, no NHL player has a better plus-minus than Dumoulin’s plus-42.

The Penguins are 7-2-1 with Dumoulin in the lineup this season.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN Starting with tonight’s game, the Penguins will play four of their next five games on the road. The team is averaging 4.20 goals per game away from PPG Paints Arena, a figure that ranks first in the NHL. On the flipside, Pittsburgh has allowed the third-fewest goals against on the road (13).

Below is a list of the Penguins road point leaders:

Player GP G A PTS Jake Guentzel 5 4 3 7 Sidney Crosby 5 1 5 6 Sam Lafferty 5 3 3 6

Aston-Reese, Blueger, Hornqvist, Letang and Tanev are all tied for fourth with four points in five games.

POWERFUL PENALTY KILL After finishing 19th in the NHL last season with a 79.7% success rate on the penalty kill, the Penguins set out to improve not only their four-man units’ success rate, but also the number of power plays they allow.

So far through 14 games, the Penguins have taken 34 minor penalties, the second fewest minors taken in the NHL (Winnipeg, 29). In addition to their more disciplined play, Pittsburgh’s penalty killing unit has killed off 85.3% of all penalties, good for ninth-best in the NHL. They’ve killed off 14 of their last 15 penalties (93.3%).

Pittsburgh has scored three shorthanded goals this season (Aston-Reese, Dumoulin, Tanev) which is tied for third in the NHL.

PENGUINS PRODUCING AT EVEN STRENGTH The Penguins have scored 38 of their 47 goals this season at even strength (80.6%). The team’s 38 even-strength goals is the sixth- most in the NHL:

Team ESG Washington Capitals 46 Toronto Maple Leafs 41 Nashville Predators 40 Florida Panthers 39 Montreal Canadiens 39 Pittsburgh Penguins 38

From an individual standpoint, Sidney Crosby (14) and Jake Guentzel (11) are tied for fourth and 15th in the NHL in even-strength points, respectively.

HOMECOMING FOR MARINO Tonight’s game figures to be a special one for defenseman John Marino, who grew up in North Easton, Massachusetts, roughly 45 minutes south of TD Garden. Marino will have dozens of friends and family in attendance as he faces his hometown team as a member of the Penguins. Marino, who also played collegiately at Harvard University in the Boston area, was acquired this offseason by the Penguins and played his way onto the team’s opening night roster with a strong preseason performance, and has since established himself as a regular on the Penguins third defensive pairing. He has one assist in 12 games this season.

BRICK WALL Penguins netminder Matt Murray extended his unbeaten streak to three games (2-0-1) after stopping 26 of 28 shots (.929 SV%) against Edmonton on Saturday. During this three-game stretch, Murray has stopped 80 of 83 shots (.964 SV%) and has a microscopic 0.99 goals-against average. He has lost in regulation just once over his last eight games (6-1-1).

Murray blanked the Stars in his last road outing, stopping all 25 shots he faced on October 26, for his 11th career shutout.

NOTEABLES FROM LAST GAME (NOV. 2 VS. EDM) *The Penguins fired 18 shots on goal in the first period, establishing a new season high for a single period. *Pittsburgh fired 52 shots on goal in Saturday’s loss, the highest mark since Nov. 27, 2017 against Philadelphia (52). *Grabbing one point in the standings, the Penguins improved their unbeaten streak against Edmonton to 18 games (14-0-4). *Yesterday’s one point ensured the Penguins remain unbeaten when giving up two or fewer goals in a game with a 7-0-1 record. *Evgeni Malkin recorded six shots in 19:45 minutes of time on ice in his return to the lineup. *Matt Murray is now 4-0-1 in his last five home games with a 2.11 goals-against average and a .928 save percentage after stopping 26 of 28 shots (.929 SV%) in the overtime loss.
