Required Materials: ● Sketchbook and pens/pencils/markers ● Pots and acrylic paints/paintbrushes ● Succulent cuttings and soil ● Packed lunches (each day) ● Sculpey or other clay form ● Andy Goldsworthy books/video ● Additional art supplies for projects at school Learning Outcomes: ● Students will learn more about the connections between nature and art and the ways the two themes intersect ● Students will get to explore various forms of art and nature based art ● Students will have the opportunity to gain exposure to various art forms and to try them out Course Description: ● Students will have the opportunity to learn about the connections between art and nature through visiting a couple museums and exploring mural style art. Students will also get to paint pots and and make a succulent to take home with them. Students will get to explore multiple styles of art that integrate nature including activist/mural art, drawing, sketching, painting, creating plants, and sculpting. Tentative Schedule*: ● Monday: Meet in morning talk about connection between art and nature, do some icebreaker activities, go to Cal Academy of Sciences and/or De Yung, eat lunch, and sketch in notebooks ● Tuesday: Visit Murals in the Mission, meet with artist who specializes in activist/movement art eat lunch at Dolores Park, and sketch in notebooks ● Wednesday: Paint pots, learn about sculpture, create small nature themed sculptures ● Thursday: Plant succulents in painted pots, Create a second art project based on one of the themes you’ve learned about this week (mural, movement art, scupture, painting, etc). ● Friday: Learn about nature artists (Andy Goldsworthy etc), Create art at the beach in small groups, reflect on the week, finish any final projects, and closing circle. Interim Week Course Description – 2019 Title: Artists’ Studio - Mural Painting Teacher: Cruickshank Credits Applied: 2.5 Elective Requested Donation: $30 Additional Information: If you sign-up for this Interim you may be required to contribute time beyond the school day for which you will receive community service hours. We will also need to meet before Interim week to power-wash and scrub the area as well as priming panels. If weather presents a problem we will postpone the world-map and concentrate on panel paintings. Required Materials: ● Old clothing and shoes that do not matter if they get paint on them Learning Outcomes: ● Mural design and creation ● Painting techniques ● Organization ● Problem solving ● Manual dexterity ● Innovation Course Description: Leave your creative mark on Oceana in a permanent way and share in a continuing visual legacy. During the week of Interim we will: ● Collectively repaint and rehabilitate the world map in front of the gym. ● Individually or in small groups create mural panels that reflect and celebrate cultural heritages ● Upon completion of the world map, plan and participate in a schoolwide celebration that may include a drone photograph of the “hands-around-the-world Human Kind/Kind Human” schoolwide portrait. Details will be given during Interim Faire Tentative Schedule*: ● Monday: Planning, prep and set-up and begin painting ● Tuesday: Painting ● Wednesday: Painting ● Thursday: Painting ● Friday: Painting followed by a thorough clean-up Interim Week Course Description – 2019 Title: Arts in the Bay Teacher: Smith Credits Applied: 2.5 Elective Requested Donation: $55.00 Required Materials: ● Walking Shoes Learning Outcomes: ● Art analysis ● Awareness of arts organizations in the Bay Area ● Navigation of public transportation in San Francisco Course Description: If you love art and San Francisco then this is the interim for you! This Interim is for students who love to learn about art in many forms. Students will be exposed to drawings, paintings, sculptures, murals and gardens. We will visit art museums, and other kinds of art centers and learn how art impacts the community. We will be spending most of our time in San Francisco. In the past we have visited SF MOMA, Precita Eyes Mural Center and Creativity Explored. Students will be provided a sketch book and given opportunities to draw things that inspire them from our travels. The majority of our time will be spent off campus so be prepared to walk. By the end of the week you will realize how art can change lives. Transportation: This interim will meet and end up at Daly City BART four out of the five days. Students will also be riding San Francisco MUNI. Tentative Schedule*: Monday – Creativity Explored Art Center Tuesday – On campus art project and movie Wednesday – Japanese Tea Garden, Rose Garden, Golden Gate Park Thursday – Precita Eyes Mural Center Friday – SF MOMA * A detailed schedule will be sent with your student as we approach interim week. Interim Week Course Description - 2020 Title: Backpacking for Beginners (or those who love it! Teacher: Ryan Reidy in conjunction with the Golden Gate National Park Conservancy Credits Applied: 2.5 Elective Requested Donation: $50-55 per person for fees and food. Important Information: FULL COMMITMENT IS REQUIRED FOR PARTICIPATION IN THIS INTERIM! This trip requires students to carry backpacks that will weigh up to 30- 40 pounds over rugged terrain while hiking up to six miles each day. Additionally, there will be private pit toilets and running water, however there will be no showers the whole week. No phones are allowed on the backpacking portion of the trip. While you do not have to have any backpacking experience, please carefully consider your willingness to commit to the full week of strenuous physical activity. Pre-Trip Meeting: Students in this interim may be required to attend up to two pre-trip meetings on a Wednesday after school from 1-4pm. Required Materials (ALL camping gear will be provided by Bay Area Wilderness Training): ● Layered clothes ● Water bottle st ● All completed paperwork ● Bag lunch for 1 and last day ● Toiletries/personal medications ● A gear list will be handed out at interim advisory. All backpacking gear will be provided unless you would like to bring your own Learning Outcomes: ● Students will learn backpacking skills such as leave no trace, map reading, risk management, and backcountry cooking. ● Students will practice plant and animal identification with traditional human uses for these resources. ● Students will learn respect and appreciation for the natural history and ecology of Point Reyes and Milagra Ridge. ● Students will develop leadership, team building and self-reflective skills. Course Description: This course is designed for students with little or no outdoor experience to grow their comfort, leadership, and confidence in the backcountry. Students will learn how to organize their own backpacking trip and all of the necessary skills to have a safe and enjoyable backpacking experience. We will spend two to three nights in places like Point Reyes National Seashore, a landscape marked with rugged mountains, cool pine forests, and crashing ocean waves. We will travel in vehicles provided by the National Park Service. Once at the site, we will our nights and days camping, hiking, learning and working in the park. We will learn “leave no trace” principles and about the ecology and plants and animals of the region. Students will have the opportunity to sleep under the stars, or to share a three-four person tent with other students. There will be an adult to student ratio of ~1:5 during the camping portion of this interim. Tentative Schedule*: ● Monday: At OHS: Learn the basics of backpacking: setting up tents, packing your pack. First day of backpacking. We will arrive at Pt Reyes in the afternoon for the hike to our first campsite. ● Tuesday: Hike to our second campsite: beach and bonfire ● Wednesday: At the second campsite: nature lessons, explore, beach and bonfire ● Thursday: Clean up and pack out of Pt Reyes, back to OHS afternoon ● Friday: Clean and sort gear: back at OHS & lunch at the beach? *The schedule will be determined based on site availability. We will provide a complete schedule well before interim. Interim Week Course Description – 2020 Title: Bay Area Museums Teacher: Poehler & Peters Credits Applied: 2.5 Elective Requested Donation: $45.00 Additional Information: Students will take Muni and/or BART every day.
