Spring Concerts and Recitals this Weekend Perpetual Motion Dance Program Tonight and Saturday Sewanee’s annual Perpetual Motion dance performances continue at 7 p.m., tonight (Friday) and Saturday, April 9, at Guerry Auditorium. This year will feature a variety of dance—in fact, more than two dozen dances choreographed and performed by students from the College and the community. The public is invited, and the performances are free. The program will also raise funds for the victims of the tsunami in Japan, with donations accepted at the door. Perpetual Motion is a performing dance company begun in 1989 and de- signed to give students an opportunity to perform for the Sewanee community the many forms and styles of dance. Area dancers join Sewanee students in the dance company. After the inaugural Perpetual Motion performance of 1989, Dean “Red” Lancaster called it a “celebration of life.” After more than 20 years, Perpetual Motion maintains a certain magical quality. Sewanee Dance Conservatory Recital Saturday The Sewanee Dance Conservatory will present its spring recital at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 9, at Guerry Auditorium. Dancers from ages 4 to 18 will be performing ballet, tap, jazz and other dance styles. David Herriott is the director of the Sewanee Dance Conservatory.     Harry Miller's Isipingo: Which Way Now - review http://www.cloudsandclocks.net/CD_reviews/millersisipingo_wwn_E.html Harry Miller's Isipingo Which Way Now (Cuneiform) It's incredibly easy for me to recall the first time I happened to listen to Harry Miller: the stylus in my turntable had just descended on the grooves of King Crimson's new LP, Islands, when the beautiful sound of a double bass, played arco, started giving shape to the main theme of Formentera Lady; after what to me sounded like a minor eternity (in reality it was only a few seconds) Mel Collins's flute and Keith Tippett's piano joined the bass. Later, it was the piano that together with Robert Fripp's Mellotron and Mark Charig's cornet took the track of the same name - and the whole album - to its majestic conclusion. Harry Miller's double bass was not the first discovery for which one had to be grateful to King Crimson and Robert Fripp. Keith Tippett's piano had been the unanticipated guest on In The Wake Of Poseidon (1970), and the piano's explosive contribution - also on an atypical single such as Cat Food - had surprised quite a few listeners. The same year, Tippett had again appeared on Lizard, this time alongside Mark Charig's cornet and Nick Evans's trombone: for many this was their first real exposure to "new English jazz". (Likewise, the first time when many heard Mongezi Feza's explosive trumpet was on Rock Bottom, Robert Wyatt's acclaimed masterpiece.) (It's not only people like Fripp who are nowadays absent.

Considerati tra i fondatori del progressive rock, pubblicano l’album In The Court Of The Crimson King 1 nel 1969 con Fripp alla chitarra, Ian McDonald (1946) al sax e al mellotron, Michael Giles (1942) alla batteria, Greg Lake (1948) al basso e alla voce e Peter Sinfield (1943) nel ruolo di paroliere. I lunghi brani strutturati, gli elaborati riff suonati all’unisono e i testi di ispirazione fantastica e fiabesca non solo diventano la caratteristica principale del gruppo, ma anche gli elementi fondanti del nuovo genere. Toivo Burlin: The creation (and re-creation) of virtual spatiality: Surround sound mixing in King Crimson’s back catalog box sets Abstract: The article analyzes surround mixing of King Crimson’s analog recordings. “Lizard,” “Larks’ Tongues in Aspic (Part 1),” “The Night Watch,” “Trio,” and “One Time” are analyzed using the theoretical perspec- tives of the music recording as representation and spatial design. There is a difference between live and studio recordings in surround: live recordings tend to be mixed according to the direct/ambient principle, while studio re- cordings are mixed according to the principle of direct-sound all around. Live recordings in surround can also often be understood as examples of documentarism, and studio recordings as examples of hyper realism. The spatial design of the surround mix tends to emphasize aspects of spatiality in the broad sense: where the recording can, for example, be interpreted as a landscape in sound.
