March 5, 2019 FREEFORM BEGINS PRODUCTION ON ‘UNRELATED’ (FKA ‘BESTIES’) MICHAEL MCDONALD SET TO DIRECT Today, Freeform began production on its highly anticipated upcoming comedy series “Unrelated” (fka “Besties”), with actor and director Michael McDonald (“MADtv,” “Brooklyn Nine Nine”) set to direct the first episode. Created by Ranada Shepard, Casey Johnson and David Windsor and executive produced by Kenya Barris, the series follows Becca (Jordin Sparks) and her newly discovered half-sister Jesi (Gigi Zumbado), as they’re thrown into each other’s lives by an online genetics test and have to figure out how to go from strangers to sisters. The series stars Jordin Sparks, Gigi Zumbado, Matt Shively, Jessika Van and Davi Santos. Shepard, Johnson and Windsor will executive produce along with Barris. “Unrelated” is produced by ABC Signature Studios. During the show, film students learned how film & television shows are cast. This episode of Open Doors brought you behind the scenes, long before the cameras are rolling, for an inside look at how professional films and television shows are cast. How has technology changed the way projects are cast? What is SAG-AFTRA? How does a film student find background for a nonunion film or television? Are there non-union casting networks? Why should film students hire professional actors versus friends/family? All these questions and more were answered by professional casting agents. The series, videotaped before a live studio audience in the BCC TV Studio, is produced entirely by student members of the BCC Media and Digital Film Club. The show, which live-streams and is archived on the NYFTSA YouTube channel, was created in 2016 to give film students around the state invaluable film industry access and advice. Today, it's important for shows to have distinctive main titles as they work to grab notice in a very crowded TV landscape.
