Biography Albert Yackle was born on May 13, 1922 in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1944 with B.S. in Mechanical Engineering / Aeronautical Option. He spent two years in the United States Navy as an Operation Officer in 1946. Shortly after, he began his aeronautical career at Kellett Aircraft Corporation from 1946 through 1960. In between his time at Kellett, Yackle briefly worked at Chase Aircraft Company for two years. He joined Lockheed Aircraft Corporation in 1960 and remained there for over 30 years. During his career at Lockheed, his projects included the Four Place Helicopter, Vertical / Short Take-Off and Landing (V/STOL), and the AH-56A Cheyenne. After his retirement, Yackle worked as a consultant in Pasadena, California. Scope and Content The collection is roughly divided into four series: Kellett Aircraft Corporation; Lockheed Aircraft Corporation; Yackle; and audio/visual. Within each series, the folders are organized alphabetically by subject. Series 1 consists of material related to Yackle’s career at Kellett Aircraft Corporation. Although, he did spend two years at Chase Aircraft Company between 1948 and 1950, those items have been included in this series. Found in this series are, but not limited to, correspondence, interdepartmental memorandums, technical data, diagrams, blueprints, reports, papers, printed ephemera, manuals, and presentation material. These are items are not exclusively related to Kellett Aircraft Corporation, but also other aerospace companies and organizations accumulated by Yackle. Series 2 consists of material related to Yackle’s career at Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, more specifically, Lockheed-California Company from 1960 through 1991. Similar to the previous series, the items include, but not limited to, correspondence, interdepartmental memorandums, technical data, diagrams, blueprints, reports, papers, printed ephemera, manuals, and presentation material. Again, these items are not entirely related to Lockheed, they include other aerospace companies and organizations compiled by Yackle during his career. Series 3 consists of material related to Yackle’s education and continued affiliation with Pennsylvania State University. Also included are items related to his consultation business after his retirement from Lockheed in 1991. They primarily Albert Yackle papers mssYackle 2 relate to Yackle’s writings about the short take-off and landing (STOL) and his career at Lockheed. Also found in this series are items related to Yackle, specifically resumes and short biographies. Series 4 consists of audio and visual material related to Yackle’s career at Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, as a consultant, and alumni from Pennsylvania State University. Cataloger note: The specific subject of a folder, when provided by Yackle’s original folder description, is provided. Otherwise, materials without a folder are in [Miscellaneous], under the respected series. The best way to navigate this collection is to perform a keyword search because there will be overlapping subject matter located in various boxes. Arrangement The collection is organized into four sections: Kellett Aircraft Corporation, Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, Yackle, and audio/visual material.
