Upon its release in lateafter the prolonged and dispiriting end of the Eaglesa period of personal turmoil, and a somewhat unfocused solo debut, "The Boys of Summer" not only reestablished Don Henley as a major star, it accomplished something he'd never had before in his entire career: rock critics, uniformly, absolutely loved this song, even those who had spent years gleefully making sport of The Boys of Summer Eagles ' excesses. It's not hard to do, really. Although much was made of the yuppie-baiting line about a Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac although one rather doubts that Henley was driving a beat-up Datsun at the time himselfthe song's overall feel is much more personal and intimate than that soundbite suggests. It's truly Don Henley 's masterpiece. AllMusic relies heavily on JavaScript. Please enable JavaScript in your browser to use the site fully. Blues Classical Country. Electronic Folk International. Meanwhile, Marlo has solved the problem that baffled Stringer Bell: how to maintain discipline--read: murders--without getting police attention. Written by Anonymous. Season 4 of the wire opens up brilliantly, to put it The Boys of Summer. Not only are we introduced to a new set-up of characters, based around the interesting idea of how teenagers on the street struggle between the choice of what is right to try and live an honest life and what is easy crimebut most of the major characters from seasons past are reintroduced seamlessly, as if they'd never been gone. I've tried so far not to fulfil the stereotype of the "preaching Wire fan" who tries to convert everyone to the show, but the fact that for 3 seasons and 1 episode I have been so engrossed within the city and the characters that I'm afraid that's about to change. In the end, quite the other way, one is renewed. From opening day until The Boys of Summer final out, my father had the AM radio tuned to the Royals baseball games. When I got old enough to ride the tractor with my father, we would listen to the game together as the ruts of the field would bounce us from side to side. Baseball made the world seem bigger. My father was a dominate pitcher in high school. His back has a permanent curvature to his spine from all that pitching. This was an era before they had rules and regulations in place to protect young, developing athletes. He was recruited to play college ball. He had thoughts of being an engineer. Going to school and playing baseball were just dreams caught in dust motes Kahn grew up being able to talk baseball with his father and Ulysses with his mother.

“The Royals of Sir Cedric” by Steve Treder of The Hardball Times December 21, 2004 At its inception, the most successful expansion franchise in pre-free agency baseball history didn’t impress many observers. The Kansas City Royals devoted most of their expansion draft picks to unproven young players, in distinct contrast to the approach taken by their companion A.L. expansion team, the Seattle Pilots. • And All the Pieces Matter: Thoughts on the Wire and the Criminal Justice System
And All the Pieces Matter: Thoughts on The Wire and the Criminal Justice System Susan A. Bandes* "Whatever it was, they don't teach it in law school."' I. INTRODUCTION The standard police procedural, even including great dramas like NYPD Blue and Hill Street Blues, adheres to time-honored narrative conventions. It focuses on good, if sometimes imperfect, cops trying to find the real bad guys-the perpetrators-and bring them to justice. The episode begins when a crime ruptures the social fabric, and ends when guilt is determined and things are put to right. The standard procedural is concerned mainly with individual fault and individual heroism. It does not raise disquieting questions about the criminal justice system, the legal system, or the social and political arrangements that lead to a permanent underclass. There are eight million stories in the Naked City,2 and in the police procedural, every one of them stands on its own. This standard cop show narrative reflects and reaffirms a deeply ingrained, reassuring view of the world. The Wire is a different kind of television. It aims not to reassure but to unsettle, or as David Simon once put it, "to pick[] a fight."3 On its surface a police procedural, The Wire has been aptly described as a portrayal of "the social, political, and economic life of an American city with the scope, observational precision, and moral vision of great literature." Unlike the standard police procedural, which presents and resolves a discrete problem every week, The * Distinguished Research Professor, DePaul University College of Law.
