Also participating were former Alberta Premier Rachel Notley, MLA (Edmonton- Strathcona) (top row, right) and Toronto Star columnist Martin Regg Cohn (top row, left). Ontario’s 25th Premier Kathleen Wynne, MPP (Don Valley West) participated in an online forum hosted by the Ryerson Democracy Forum on November 26. Also participating were former Alberta Premier Rachel Notley, MLA (Edmonton-Strathcona) and Toronto Star columnist Martin Regg Cohn. MLA Notley is still the leader of the opposition in Alberta. Former Premiers Wynne and Notley discussed the importance of women’s involvement in a male dominated political realm. Also participating was PEO Government Relations Consultant Howard Brown. TVO’s Steve Paikin published an article about the panel entitled “The real reason more women should be in politics.” “It’s just very clear that, when there’s a critical mass of women at the table, it means different issues get discussed, and there’s a different commitment to substance,” said MPP Wynne. “We’ve got to change the criteria of what a good leader looks like,” said MLA Notley. “And, left to their own devices, all political parties will leave women behind.” MPP Wynne recently announced that she is stepping down as an MPP as of the 2022 election. She has a long time relationship with PEO and has frequently attended events. PEO Chapter representatives are encouraged to continue participating in online discussions to stay top of mind and build relationships with local elected officials. 7 | PAGE PEO NEWS NDP MPP SHARES VIDEO OF SUPPORT WITH PEO EAST TORONTO CHAPTER Peter Tabuns, MPP (Toronto– Danforth), NDP Energy and Climate Crisis Critic Peter Tabuns, MPP (Toronto-Danforth), NDP Energy and Climate Crisis Critic sent a video the PEO East Toronto Chapter GLP Chair Omid Sadeghi, P.Eng. on November 15. The video was in support of PEO’s 30 by 30 initiative, which hopes to have 30% of newly licensed engineers be women by the year 2030. “The fact that women are 18% of engineers in Ontario and 50% of the population, says that we’re not getting the best talent,” said MPP Tabuns. “If you’re going to mobilize the best talent in society, you have to make sure that all sectors of society take party in that mobilization.” This is a great example of a strong relationship with a local MPP. Please distribute widely. Updated as of September 30. Ontario Health Coalition UPDATED LIST BELOW Day of Action on Long-Term Care Thursday October 8 at 11 a.m. We are calling for: • Immediate action by the Ford government to recruit & train staff, improve pay and working conditions and provide full-time work. Quebec's and BC's governments have already done this. There is no excuse for further delay. The conditions of work are the conditions of care. • The Ford government to implement a minimum care standard of 4-hours of hands-on care per resident per day. • Both our federal and provincial governments to end for-profit long-term care, starting by making Revera public. The funding and staffing announcements this week so far increase the money but the announced staffing is far less than needed and strings are not attached to ensure that care levels are actually increased. There is no clear recruitment plan and the updated visitor policy does nothing to stabilize the workforce or increase the care per resident. What we are calling for has not changed, and is needed now more than ever before. Join the Day of Action to create political pressure to expose the lack of action to improve care in long-term care and to push for an end to for-profit privatization of long-term care. 15 Gervais Drive, Suite 201, Toronto, Ontario M3C 1Y8 Tel: 416-441-2502 Email: [email protected] Web: www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca UPDATED LIST OF EVENTS, PLEASE JOIN IN: If you would like to organize an action in your area, in accordance with our safety guidelines and Public Health rules, please contact us at 416-441-2502 or [email protected] (with the subject line: DAY OF ACTION) Current Public Health guidelines forbid groups of more than 25 outside across Ontario.

  • “As a Straight, White Man — Wait, Not White.”
Queen’s Park Today – Daily Report February 6, 2020 Quotation of the day “As a straight, white man — wait, not white.” Liberal leadership candidate Alvin Tedjo, who is of Asian descent, makes a quip about using fellow contender Steven Del Duca’s speaking notes during the party’s LGBTQ forum. Today at Queen’s Park On the schedule The house will reconvene on Tuesday, February 18, 2020. In the park The Ontario Autism Coalition will stage a “freeze-in” to protest the Ford government’s delay in implementing a needs-based autism program. Families and advocates will march on the legislature’s south lawn and stand still for five minutes at 11:30 a.m. Coronavirus scare shines light on need for public health funding: NDP The Opposition and government traded barbs over concerns about the coronavirus at Queen’s Park on Wednesday. That’s despite the latest update from provincial health officials that there are no new cases beyond the three previously confirmed, and as the number of cases under investigation continued to drop this week. NDP Leader Andrea Horwath held a press conference to call on the PCs to reverse future funding cuts to public health, while Health Minister Christine Elliott’s office fired back that Horwath was trying to “score political points.” “Ontario’s expert public health officials have been unanimously clear: Ontario is prepared to effectively respond to the 2019 novel coronavirus, something Andrea Horwath herself acknowledged,” Elliott’s spokesperson Travis Kann said in an email statement. Kann added that public health officials have briefed the NDP three times on the matter in order to ensure all MPPs are informed and “to demonstrate that the health and safety of Ontarians is and always should be above politics.” Horwath did admit Ontario’s response to the outbreak has been “outstanding” but stressed that “we need to keep it that way.” She urged the PCs to cancel planned funding cuts and asked the government to review public health resources in order to keep Ontarians safe in the future.

Queen’s Park Today – Daily Report July 23, 2019 Quotation of the day “Get some BBQ & A time.” The tagline for an upcoming summer PC Party fundraiser featuring Michael Tibollo. Today at Queen’s Park On the schedule The summer recess is on until Monday, October 28. Dean French drops defamation suit against Randy Hillier Dean French has abandoned his defamation lawsuit against Independent MPP Randy Hillier. French — who resigned as Premier Doug Ford’s chief of staff amid a patronage scandal last month — was seeking $100,000 in damages over Hillier’s tweets alleging French was involved in electoral fraud in Ontario and Alberta political leadership races. Hillier said in a statement Monday he’s “happy to turn the page” on the matter, which he called a “distraction.” “While Mr. French and I do not see eye-to-eye on many things, I am glad we have found something we can agree on,” said Hillier, who was expelled from the PC government benches in March. French’s lawyer Gavin Tighe said his client is “grateful” Hillier took down the tweets in question. Tighe said there was little point in carrying on with expensive and time-consuming litigation as French is no longer involved with the government. He noted French had planned to donate any award to charity. Tighe has long represented the Ford family and Doug Ford since becoming premier; he was appointed to chair the Public Accountants Council with a $166K annual salary last year. The PC Party previously said it would not foot the bill for French’s lawsuit.

  • LETTER to ATTORNEY GENERAL DOUG DOWNEY from KATE LUSHINGTON CC: Charles Harnick LAO, Premier Doug Ford, Andrea Horvath NDP
LETTER TO ATTORNEY GENERAL DOUG DOWNEY FROM KATE LUSHINGTON 1 Dear Attorney General Doug Downey, I am profoundly shocked and saddened by the recent cuts announced to legal aid for the poor by our provincial government, and even more so by their devastating and retroactive implementation by Legal Aid Ontario, directly targeting some of the most vulnerable people in Ontario, through removing the invaluable work for access to justice, public legal education and community support done by specialized legal clinics for the poor and marginalized throughout Ontario. My connection to this issue is through the Injured Worker Community Legal Clinic, which has been serving injured workers free of charge for nearly 50 years. IWC is a model of value for money in every possible measure, from their well-documented contribution to ground-breaking and cost-saving law reform to their individual representation of the most difficult cases that no generalized legal clinic would touch, thus saving taXpayers from having to support them. The work achieved by this specialty clinic far exceeds its current yearly budget and geographical location. It is indeed based in Toronto, but the effects and delivery of service have attained an immeasurable province-wide impact through its vital dissemination of accumulated knowledge and eXperience and its community engagement in public legal education. I have been involved for the past fifteen years in one such far-reaching community public legal education project, the Injured Worker Speaker School (IWSS). I was able to offer my eXpertise in public speaking and adult education, but the bulk of the work in legal education was done by my colleagues, the staff of IWC, well-beyond their paid hours of duty and time devoted to individual case work.
