2019-20 MONMOUTH BASKETBALL GAME NOTES 4 MONMOUTH BREAKOUT GAME FOR RUTTY NOTES Sophomore forward Nikkei Rutty established the post early on against Hofstra, and converted a career high five field goals for his first career double-digit scoring effort, finishing with 10 points. The big man also snagged seven rebounds, a career best, and blocked a pair of shots, tied for a career best. He has started the first two games of the season. PAPAS DISHING IT OUT Junior guard George Papas collected seven assists, three more than his previous career high, in the Hawks’ contest at Hofstra. Papas has seen significant time in the early season at the point guard spot after playing a majority of his minutes as a freshman and sophomore off the ball. He made just his second career start in the season opener at Lehigh and the first since December 16, 2017 as a freshman, making a critical late game three pointer in the win. ASSIST-TURNOVER SUCCESS Monmouth has had an equal or positive assist-turnover ratio in both games played this season after doing so just seven times all of last year. MU had 16 assists and 16 turnovers at Lehigh before going 18 assists-10 turnovers at Hofstra, led by seven helpers from George Papas after Sam Chaput dished out seven at Lehigh. SALNAVE AND HAMMOND ALMOST MATCHED Since the beginning of last season, Monmouth’s Preseason All-MAAC Second Team selections Ray Salnave and Deion Hammond are separated by just two points and three total minutes played in 36 games played. Salnave has 429 points in 939 minutes, while Hammond has 427 points in 942 minutes. SPREADING THE WEALTH All 12 players in uniform have seen action in both contests for King Rice to open the season, and 11 of the 12 have scored in each game. Gob Gabriel was the only Hawk to not score at Lehigh, while Sam Ibiezugbe was the lone Hawk left off the scoring column at Hofstra. FIRST CAREER START Sophomore guard Samuel Chaput made his first career start at Hofstra, playing 14:32 in the game. Despite dealing with a nagging injury preseason, Chaput dished out a career-best seven assists in the win over Lehigh, and did so while playing a career-high 28 minutes. He added four points and turned it over just twice on the night. BIG SAM BEING BIG SAM Senior center Sam Ibiezugbe collected a career-high eight rebounds in just 10+ minutes against Lehigh, also converting three field goals for six points, one off his career high for made shots. The big man had a steal and an assist and disrupted several Lehigh possessions inside defensively. 18 ASSISTS Monmouth dished out 18 assists against Hofstra, the most MU has accumulated in the last 55 games dating back to a 19-assist performance at Quinnipiac on December 28, 2017. The Hawks are averaging 17 assists per contest through two games. TRAVELING HAWKS Monmouth will travel 6,035 miles before returning to West Long Branch for its first home game on November 26. That travel will all take place in a 17-day span between November 5 and November 22, with MU traveling to Lehigh, Hofstra, Kansas State and Kansas, Pittsburgh and Orlando for seven contests before returning to the OceanFirst Bank Center. MAAC PRESEASON Monmouth was chosen to finish fourth in the MAAC by the league’s head coaches. MU was five points behind third- selected Quinnipiac and two points clear of the fifth selection, Manhattan. ayR Salnave and Deion Hammond were selected to the conference’s Preseason Second Team after finishing just four points apart from each other overall a season ago. Salnave led MU with 11.9 points per game with Hammond checking in at 11.8, while the latter led MU in made threes with 74. WHAT THE HAWKS LOST The Hawks had four players on last year’s roster that will not return this season, with that group accounting for 23.0% of the Hawks scoring. The biggest loss was All-MAAC Third Team choice Diago Quinn, who led MU in rebounding and blocks while becoming the all-time games played leader in Hawks history. Nick Rutherford left via transfer after leading the Hawks in steals, while Trevon Gross (out of eligibility) and Dave Calloway Jr. are no longer on the roster. WHAT THE HAWKS RETURN Monmouth returns its top two scorers and four of the first five. Of the 11 players coming back for the Blue and White, eight of them have at least two years of experience in the program and will be juniors or higher entering the season. Mustapha Traore is the only Hawk coming back that started every single game a season ago.

2019-20 MONMOUTH BASKETBALL GAME NOTES 5 MONMOUTH WHAT THE HAWKS BROUGHT IN NOTES Four new players join the MU roster this season, including three freshmen in Gob Gabriel, Jarvis Vaughan and Jake Glezen as well as transfer guard Donovann Toatley. Gabriel was an All-NEPSAC Second Team choice out of New Hampshire, scoring over 20 points per game. His brother, Wenyen, played against the Hawks in 2017 as a member of the University of Kentucky and is now with the NBA’s Sacramento Kings. Vaughan comes off a prep year at Massanutten Military Academy, and prior to that was the Virginia 2A State Player of the Year at Robert E. Lee HS. Glezen was a NEPSAC Class A All New England pick at Loomis Chaffee School in Connecticut at power forward, and Toatley scored in double digits last season at Chattanooga. He led the Mocs in assists and shot over 42% from the field. Toatley was high school teammates at Riverdale Baptust with Deion Hammond. ANOTHER TOUGH NON-CONFERENCE Of Monmouth’s 11 non-conference opponents, six of them were picked in the top-five of their respective league’s preseason polls with three chosen to win their conference. Kansas was picked to win the Big 12, while Hofstra was the top pick in the CAA and Radford was the Big South leader. Six of 11 won 20 or more games last year, and four competed in major national postseason tournaments (NCAA/NIT). NUMBER CHANGE After playing his first two seasons in #11, junior guard George Papas will wear #5 for the Blue and White this sea- son. Papas becomes the fourth Hawk in five seasons to wear #5, joining Deon Jones, Ray Salnave, and Nick Rutherford. BRINGING IN SIZE Monmouth is one of just six teams nationwide to tout a freshman class with an average height of 6’8” or more. Illinois and Utah State come in at an average of 6’10”, with Army West Point at 6’9”. MU is tied with Georgetown and Tennessee in bringing in a freshman class averaging 6’8”. ANOTHER MAAC FINALS APPEARANCE MU has played in two of the last four MAAC Finals, falling to Iona in each matchup. Last season, all three of Monmouth’s MAAC Tournament wins came over teams they were unable to beat in the regular season. MU went 0-5 in the regular season against their three MAAC Tourney foes before going 3-0 over them to go to the finals. MU fell to Niagara by 27, and dropped a pair to both Canisius and Quinnipiac during the regular schedule. SECOND LONGEST TENURED COACH IN THE MAAC King Rice, entering his ninth season at MU, is the second longest tenured coach at their current institution in the MAAC. RICE PASSES KORNEGAY With his 130th career win over Quinnipiac in the MAAC quarterfinals last season, King Rice tied Monmouth Hall of Famer Ron Kornegay in career wins, making him fourth all time in school history. Kornegay is MU’s all-time scoring leader across all divisions, netting 2,526 points from 1966-69. He passed Kornegay with win #131 over Canisius in the semifinals. Iona 6-9 Rice posted 17 league victories, including an 11-2 mark at home and a nation-leading 13 road tallies and 17 wins Kentucky 0-2 away from home, including neutral site wins. He secured Monmouth’s first regular season title in 11 years and the top Lafayette 1-1 Lehigh 2-1 seed in the conference tournament while knocking off the program’s first-ever ranked opponent in No. 17 Notre Dame on LIU Brooklyn 1-3 Thanksgiving night as well as wins at UCLA, Georgetown and Rutgers and a neutral site victory over Southern California. Maryland 0-2 In his fifth season in West Long Branch, Rice mentored MAAC Player of the Year Justin Robinson and league Rookie Memphis 1-0 of the Year Micah Seaborn, both of whom were all-conference selections along with senior Deon Jones. Robinson earned Mississippi Valley State 1-0 multiple national awards while setting the single-season scoring record under Rice’s tutelage. Mount St. Mary’s 2-2 Navy 1-1 Following the 2015-16 campaign, Rice was rewarded with a contract extension, which extended his contract to 2020-21. The Hawks, who advanced to the conference semifinals in just their second season in the league, Notre Dame 1-1 put a pair of guards on all-conference teams and held 26 of their opponents to 70 points or less. Ole Miss 0-1 In 2014-15, the Hawks placed guard Justin Robinson on the All-MAAC First Team and the NABC All-District Second Penn 2-2 Team and guard Deon Jones on the All-MAAC Third Team, while senior guard Andrew Nicholas was honored as the Penn State 0-1 Princeton 1-2 league’s Sixth Man of the Year. In his first two seasons in the Robert Morris 0-5 league, Monmouth outperformed its preseason coaches poll prognostication, as the Hawks were selected sixth prior to Rutgers 1-2 2014-15 and finished the regular season in a tie for third place, with eventual tournament champion Manhattan. Sacred Heart 1-1 In 2013-14, paced by one of the highest scoring duos in program history in Jones and Nicholas, the Hawks posted Saint Francis 2-2 an 11-21 overall record, which included the championship trophy in the regional pod of the Barclays Center Classic, and Saint Joseph’s 0-1 Saint Peter’s 7-6 the team’s highest scoring average in 13 years. Seton Hall 0-2 The Hawks started the 2012-13 campaign with a 5-3 record before finishing their final season in the Northeast Con- Siena 11-2 ference with an overall mark of 10-21 and 5-13 in league play. South Carolina 0-1 In his first season with the Blue and White, Rice made an immediate impact on the program, leading the Hawks to South Carolina State 1-0 a fifth place tie in the league standings. The Hawks finished 12-20 overall, but finished the year winners of nine of their St. Francis Brooklyn 4-2 St. John’s 0-1 last 12 games to claim a 10-8 league mark and grab the No. 6 seed in the conference postseason. MU Basketball enters its eighth season in the building af- ter playing previously in Boylan Gymnasium. Monmouth University ushered in a new era in the school’s history with the completion and opening of the long anticipated arena in the Fall of 2009. It not only serves the school’s 23 Division I Athletics programs, but is also a key asset for the entire University community. The facility features classroom and seminar space and a confer- ence center that can be used for meetings, or be partitioned and used for study hall, clinics or workshops. The gym, which features a state-of-the-art fitness center, is also the location of the Leon Hess Champions' Hall, Mon- mouth Athletics Hall of Fame and Varsity Club, which will be used for hospi- tality for Blue/White Club members. Student lounges and study areas with complete wireless Internet access are also available. The OceanFirst Bank Center, which is connected to Boylan Gym and the Steadman Natatorium, is 153,200 square feet of space for students and the community to utilize in many different capacities. It’s most prominent fea- ture is the 4,000 seat arena, which is the nest for the Monmouth men’s and women’s basketball programs. The arena also features a six-lane, 200-meter indoor track, which can be used for training and competition all year long. A fitness center with state-of-the-art strength and cardiovascular equipment is also housed here. The arena provides varsity athletes & coaches with meeting facilities, locker rooms, practice and competition facilities & expanded and upgraded ame- nities. The University Bookstore was also relocated from the Stafford Stu- dent Center, which will improve accessibility for commuting students, and the additional square footage will enable the stocking of a greater variety of merchandise. In the summer of 2011, with funds raised through private donations, Mon- mouth’s varsity athletics weight room was given a $200,000 overhaul. Renovations, which began in June and were funded entirely by the gener- ous donations of Monmouth supporters, included a brand new Mondo floor, replaced HVAC system, new lights and a fresh paint job. The aesthetics of the room were improved with MU branded wall decorations.
