2020-21 MONMOUTH BASKETBALL GAME NOTES 4 MONMOUTH NOTES HAMMOND BREAKS A RECORD Deion Hammond’s first three-point attempt in Sunday’s game at Siena made him the program record holder for the most threes attempted in program history. He recently passed Justin Robinson (664 att.) to move into a tie for first before passing Deki Delic, who held the record since he graduated 14 years ago at 667 attempts. MARTIN PLAYING IN GAME #100 Senior Melik Martin played in his 100th game against Siena Sunday, becoming the third Hawk this season and 45th in school history to reach the milestone. He joins classmates Deion Hammond and Marcus McClary, who played in their 100th in the first game vs. Canisius. THIS FRESHMEN CLASS Monmouth’s four freshmen all contributed in the sweep of Canisius, combining for 29 points, 20 rebounds, 12 assists and a 17-25 shooting mark from the field in the two victories. Klemen Vuga became the first Hawk to score in double figures as a true freshman since Sam Chaput on 1/5/19 against Saint Peter’s. Myles Foster knocked in his first four field goal attempts in the opening win against Canisius, and Myles Ruth finished the weekend with seven assists. Jack Holmstrom knocked in his first career three in the second win over Canisius. SCORING THE BALL, AND EFFICIENTLY Monmouth scored 97 points in the second win over Canisius, the most since netting 98 on 3/9/19, a MAAC Tournament quarterfinal upset of Canisius. In doing so, MU scored 54 points in the first half, their most in a period since a 55-point outburst at Canisius on 2/14/20. The whopping 59.1% mark from three was MU’s best since a win over Manhattan on 1/18/20, while the 58.7 field goal shooting mark was the best since beating the Griffs on 1/24/19. TOATLEY GETS IT GOING Chattanooga transfer Donovann Toatley has scored in double figures in three of his four games, including tying high school teammate Deion Hammond for the team-high in the second win over Canisius. He is one of three Hawks scoring in double figures on the year, netting 11.5 points in just 17.8 minutes per night. FOSTER TO THE LEFT Freshman Myles Foster scored eight points, knocking in his first four field goals en route to a 4-5 performance against Canisius to top all MU freshmen in single-game scoring to this point in the year. HAMMOND AND PAPAS LEAD THE CHARGE Monmouth senior guards Deion Hammond and George Papas came out of the gates in the first week ready to roll, with each scoring 61 points and combining for 43 of Monmouth’s 82 made field goals and 23 of the Hawks’ 29 made three pointers. The duo combined for over 177 minutes played. COUNTING DOWN TO RECORDS FOR HAMMOND Deion Hammond enters this game with 246 made triples in three-plus seasons, already good for third on the all-time list. He is 11 shy of Justin Robinson’s 257, and 14 short of Dave Calloway’s program record of 260. Hammond has made over 70 three pointers in each of his first three seasons in the Blue and White. Hammond recently passed Fernando Sanders for ninth on the all-time scoring list. Hammond enters the game with 1,395 career points, nine shy of Dave Calloway in eighth on the scoring list. SPREAD THE WEALTH Monmouth played 14 players in both games vs. Canisius, with 13 of them registering a field goal and a rebound at some point in the week. KING GETS 150 Head Coach King Rice became the fourth coach in Monmouth history to win 150 games on 12/18 against Saint Peter’s, with all of them coming at the helm of the Hawks. Rice’s first win came on 12/6/11 at Navy, with win #50 coming over Siena on 3/1/15. His 100th win took place at Manhattan, when a late Micah Seaborn triple propelled his Hawks over the Jaspers on 2/10/17. Rice joins three other MU coaches at the 150 win mark (Bill Boylan, Wayne Szoke, Dave Calloway), and just two that have done it at the Division I level (Szoke, Calloway). There are currently 173 active DI head coaches with 150+ wins, with Rice recently joining that group. Of those 173, only 34 of them have won 150+ games at only one school. Rice is the only coach currently in the MAAC to post 150 wins at their current institution. MAAC PRESEASON POLL The Hawks were selected to finish third in the league via the conference’s preseason poll, conducted by the league’s head coaches. It marks the fourth time in six seasons the Hawks have been selected in the top three. Since joining the MAAC, the Blue and White have been selected to finish outside the top-five just twice, both in their first two seasons in the league. In 2014-15, MU was selected sixth and were chosen 11th as a MAAC unknown in 2013-14, transitioning from the NEC.

2020-21 MONMOUTH BASKETBALL GAME NOTES 5 MONMOUTH ALL THE NOTES ON PAPAS TYING SINGLE-GAME THREE-POINTNOTES RECORD -In the season opener, George Papas tied the program record for made three-pointers in a single game with nine. His outburst tied Monmouth Hall of Famer and former head coach Dave Calloway’s mark, set on January 2, 1990 in a win at Pepperdine. The record stood for more than 30 years before Papas tied it. -Papas is one of four players in school history to record 7+ threes in a game on two different occasions, joining Justin Robinson, Dejan Delic and Dave Calloway. -Papas, who tied his career-high with 32 points in the game, is the third Hawk to score 30+ on opening night. He joins Rich Pass, who had 36 to open the 1984 season against LaSalle, and John Giraldo, who netted 33 in the 1994 opener vs. Loyola (Md.). LET IT FLY Monmouth hit 15 threes on opening night against Hofstra, the most the Hawks have hit in a game since March 14, 2017, an NIT game against Ole Miss, a span of 97 games. HIGH-FLYING MELIK Melik Martin was one point shy of tying his career high on opening night, and matched his career mark of eight rebounds in the game. He also set a career-best with five steals, posting his 11th career game in double figures and second highest scoring output of his career. LATEST START IN HISTORY Due to two non-conference games being canceled and a third vs. Hofstra postponed due to COVID-19, Monmouth is beginning a season at the latest point in the calendar in its Division I history. Twice before the Hawks have opened the season in December, opening on 12/1/92 against George Washington and on 12/1/94 at Loyola (Md.). PLAYERS FROM ALL OVER Monmouth has players representing seven states and two countries this season, the most in the King Rice era. It marks the second time Rice has had players from three different countries on his roster, with 13 Hawks from the United States in addition to Vuga (Slovenia) and Chaput (Canada). The previous time came in 2013-14, when Vuk Baletic (Serbia) and Marcelo Ruediger (Brazil) were in the MU front court. The Hawks also have players from seven states, including New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Illinois and New Hampshire. APPROACHING 1,000 AS A PROGRAM Monmouth currently has 998 total wins as a program, including 467 prior to joining the Division I ranks and 531 since 1983, the Hawks first year in Division I. Bill Boylan, the program’s first coach, leads the way with 364 wins, trailed by longtime coaches Dave Calloway (178) and Wayne Szoke (168). King Rice has 151 wins leading the Blue and White, while Ron Kornegay won 129 times at MU. Ron Krayl also has seven wins as head coach following a brief interim stint.

CALLAHAN NAMED TOP-FIVE ASSISTANT In a summer ranking from “Stadium”, longtime Monmouth assistant Rick Callahan was listed as one of the top five men’s basketball assistant coaches in the MAAC. Callahan is the only assistant that has been with King Rice in all nine of his seasons at MU as they enter year #10 together. Callahan’s career began in 1980 at Syracuse, as he enters his 40th season of collegiate coaching. POSITIVE TEAM ASSIST-TURNOVER RATIO For the 13th time in program history last season, the Hawks posted a positive assist-turnover ratio last season with 399 assists to 395 turnovers. It is the second time the Blue and White were positive in that department under King Rice after going 431-425 in 2016-17. The Hawks are positive in the category through five games this year as well. LONGEST TENURED COACH IN THE MAAC King Rice, entering his 10th season at MU, is the longest tenured coach at their current institution in the MAAC. Rice was hired two weeks before colleague at Manhattan, while took over at Rider the year after Rice was appointed at MU. has been in the MAAC the longest, taking the Saint Peter’s job in 2006, but has only been at his current school, Marist for two seasons. This year, at Iona is the lone coach to make his MAAC debut. WHAT’S RETURNING The Hawks are returning 10 letterwinners from an 18-win team a season ago, including All-MAAC First Teamer Deion Hammond. MU has 1,400 of 2,209 points returning, which is 63.3% of last year’s offensive output. MU has three of its top five scorers back in Hammond, George Papas and Samuel Chaput as well as it’s leading assist man (Chaput) and top shot blocker in Nikkei Rutty. SENIOR HEAVY Monmouth’s four seniors combined to score 76 of the team’s 88 points against Hofstra, knocking in 28 of the team’s 32 field goals. Three of the four seniors went into double figures, led by 32 from George Papas and 24 from Deion Ham- mond. Melik Martin scored 16 points while Marcus McClary chipped in four.

MU Basketball enters its eighth season in the building af- ter playing previously in Boylan Gymnasium. Monmouth University ushered in a new era in the school’s history with the completion and opening of the long anticipated arena in the Fall of 2009. It not only serves the school’s 23 Division I Athletics programs, but is also a key asset for the entire University community. The facility features classroom and seminar space and a confer- ence center that can be used for meetings, or be partitioned and used for study hall, clinics or workshops. The gym, which features a state-of-the-art fitness center, is also the location of the Leon Hess Champions' Hall, Mon- mouth Athletics Hall of Fame and Varsity Club, which will be used for hospi- tality for Blue/White Club members. Student lounges and study areas with complete wireless Internet access are also available. The OceanFirst Bank Center, which is connected to Boylan Gym and the Steadman Natatorium, is 153,200 square feet of space for students and the community to utilize in many different capacities. It’s most prominent fea- ture is the 4,000 seat arena, which is the nest for the Monmouth men’s and women’s basketball programs. The arena also features a six-lane, 200-meter indoor track, which can be used for training and competition all year long. A fitness center with state-of-the-art strength and cardiovascular equipment is also housed here. The arena provides varsity athletes & coaches with meeting facilities, locker rooms, practice and competition facilities & expanded and upgraded ame- nities. The University Bookstore was also relocated from the Stafford Stu- dent Center, which will improve accessibility for commuting students, and the additional square footage will enable the stocking of a greater variety of merchandise. In the summer of 2011, with funds raised through private donations, Mon- mouth’s varsity athletics weight room was given a $200,000 overhaul. Renovations, which began in June and were funded entirely by the gener- ous donations of Monmouth supporters, included a brand new Mondo floor, replaced HVAC system, new lights and a fresh paint job. The aesthetics of the room were improved with MU branded wall decorations.
