Most races have been decided, but a few may require runoffs. In races where no candidate receives 30% of the vote, the second place finisher may call for a runoff. Given that many political observers see North Carolina as a “purple” state, the November elections are expected to be hotly contested. Terry Van Duyn (20%). Attorney General Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein will face Republican winner Jim O’Neill, the Forsyth County District Attorney, who received 47%. Agriculture Republican Commissioner Steve Troxler will face Democratic winner Jenna Wadsworth, a Wake County Soil and Water Supervisor, who received 54%.     2020 North Carolina Council of State Candidate Summary North Carolina established its Council of State in the Constitution it drew up in 1776, the year that the State and the United States itself declared its independence from Great Britain. The Council is headed by the Governor and meets periodically to allow for coordination and exchange of information across executive branch agencies and to vote on certain decisions, especially regarding the sale of government property or the borrowing of money. In its current form, the Council consists of the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Auditor, Treasurer, Superintendent of Public Instruction, Attorney General, Commissioner of Agriculture, Commissioner of Labor and Commissioner of Insurance. All of these offices are up for re-election in November. Here are the candidates and the races they're involved in: Governor Incumbent Roy Cooper, a Democrat, is being challenged by the current two-term Lieutenant Governor, Republican Dan Forest. Forest retained his position four years ago even though the sitting GOP Governor was unseated by Cooper, and is now trying to retake the Governor's Mansion for his party. Lt. Governor With Forest stepping away from the position after eight years, the No. 2 spot in the Executive Branch is up for grabs between Greensboro Republican Mark Robinson, a day care operator, and current NC House District 38 Representative Yvonne Lewis Holley of Raleigh. Robinson pulled off a surprise victory in the GOP primary after rising to prominence two years ago when he gave an impassioned speech in favor of Second Amendment rights in front of the Greensboro City Council.

    Primary Lineup Set in North Carolina Digital Media and Data Privacy Law Blog on 03.21.2012 Posted in Political Advertising The primary election in North Carolina is Tuesday, May 8, 2012, with a second primary (if needed) being either June 26 or July 17. The second primary will be June 26 if no second primary is needed for U.S. Representative races and it will be July 17 if there is a second primary for those federal races. Since there are a number of multi-candidate primaries in the Congressional races, odds are that the second primary will be July 17. If no candidate receives 40% of the vote in the first primary, the second-place finisher can, but doesn't have to, call for a second primary. We have covered disputes and issues relating to political advertising during prior election seasons With this year's contested primaries in North Carolina and with the presidential election in the fall, we expect to have plenty to report on this year. To kick it all off, we'll run down the primaries slated in North Carolina. Federal Races President President Obama has no named opposition in the primary but consistent with State law, there is a line for "no preference" on the May 8 primary ballot. There will also be such a line on the Republican presidential primary ballot. The four major Republicans pursuing the White House are all on the North Carolina primary ballot--Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum. U.S. House Congressional candidates this year will run in new districts drawn by the 2011 North Carolina General Assembly, and, in many cases, the lines are substantially different than the last election.

Undecided independent voters seem to be moving in McCain’s direction. Last week Obama had a 51-39 lead with that demographic. Now it’s just 50-46, an indication that the Democratic nominee isn’t necessarily losing support but McCain might be picking up the late deciders. “It looks likely to be a long election night in North Carolina,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. “The race couldn’t be much closer.” One race that doesn’t look particularly close is that for the US Senate in the state. Kay Hagan has opened up a seven point lead over incumbent Elizabeth Dole, 51-44. “Kay Hagan’s gained four points on her lead in the last week,” said Debnam. “Clearly the Godless Americans ad backfired.” The Governor’s race is also too close to call, with Bev Perdue leading Pat McCrory by the razor thin margin of 49-48.
