We want to take time to thank John Trandem of the Fargo-Morehead area for responding to our plea for articles for our newsletter. Over the years, John has contributed a few which really show his long time love of our favorite brand. John is really an expert on the 70s era Marks. He knows how to find the best examples and at the right price. Here is John’s story…. It was 1994, and I had just moved to Minneapolis at the age of 19 when I started noticing the Lincoln Mark V. In those years, there were still plenty of them on the road, and they could be bought for a reasonable price, so I set out to find one. Now when I say 'reasonable price,' what I Welcome to the really mean is three figures- not four, so my choices were not exactly abundant, but they were out there. Browsing one of the local auto trader type magazines one day, I came across a 1977 Lincoln Northstar News, the Mark V Cartier and wanted it bad! The problem is that it was $2,000, and I didn't have $2,000 monthly publication of any more than I had $2,000,000, so I looked at the ad every day and hoped that another one would the Northstar Region come along in my price range. Well, one did, but it was not a Cartier, and is not the subject of this story, but I did own my first Mark V- Burgundy with a white half-vinyl top and Burgundy Roma- of the Lincoln and no velour interior.

  • Good Day, Mystery Fans! Today's Stellar Author Is John Sandford. I
Good day, Mystery Fans! Today’s stellar author is John Sandford. I could do two write-ups on his work as he has two heroes, and perhaps I will. For now, though, I would like to tell you about Virgil Flowers, my personal favorite. The thirteen book ongoing series started in 2007 with Dark of the Moon. T he latest one, published in 2021, is O cean Prey. Sandford’s Lucas Davenport series has titles that all have the word “Prey” in them, so you might be wondering what Flowers is doing in a “Prey” book. The answer must be that Sandford wanted to capture the fans of both of his heroes with just one book. Flowers is tall, lean, late thirties and has been divorced three times. Deciding he did not want to be a four time loser, he stopped getting married. He is still a bit of a lady’s man. He works for the fictional Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension in the twin cities of St.Paul and Minneapolis. He has a university degree in environmental science, is an outdoorsman and a published author in hunting and fishing magazines. Flowers loves to fish, and often brings his fishing boat behind his car when seeking justice for the wrongdoer. In order to be completely transparent in my reviews, I should say that I grew up in St.Paul and thus recognize lots of the places where Virgil goes in his quest to catch or dispatch the villains. The books are thrillers, not cozys. There are some graphic scenes, but they don’t overwhelm the narratives.

This book does depend on at least one pretty amazing coincidence, but by the time it occurs, you really don't care. Officer Graff Brandon McGibbon More about membership! We don't even get much sense of knowing Davenport from the inside, though Sandford does bring out his phobia of flying in planes, and his liking for escaping job stress by fishing in the North Woods. Ernie prodded Dale-Something with the toe of his desert boot, and Dale blew a bubble of blood. The Prey books usually feature a tightly plotted war of wits, but in this case Lucas makes a deductive leap that seems reasonable and leads to an important clue.
