Tv Land Debuts Unflinching Larry David Comedy, “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” on February 16 TV LAND DEBUTS UNFLINCHING LARRY DAVID COMEDY, “CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM,” ON FEBRUARY 16 New York, NY – February 14, 2013 – TV Land will premiere Larry David’s hit HBO comedy series, “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” kicking off with marathons on Saturday and Sunday, February 16th and 17th, from 11pm to 6am and Monday, February 18th from 11pm to 3am. The show will then settle into its regular timeslot of 2am ET/PT beginning Tuesday, February 19th, where it will air daily. TVLand.com will also stream full episodes of the show, and fans will be able to stay engaged with @tvland during the marathon to judge #awkward or #notawkward on their favorite Larry moments. “Curb Your Enthusiasm” stars Larry David as himself in an unsparing but tongue-in-cheek depiction of his life. Shot in a vérité style and often featuring celebrities who play themselves, the episodes are improvised by the actors from a mere outline created by David. The series also stars Cheryl Hines (“Suburgatory”) as David's wife Cheryl, Jeff Garlin (“Daddy Day Care”) as David's manager Jeff and Susie Essman (“Keeping the Faith”) as Jeff's wife Susie. The series has been nominated for seven Primetime Emmy® Awards over the course of its run, and won a Golden Globe® Award for Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy in 2003. “Curb Your Enthusiasm” has also received awards from the Writers Guild of America, Directors Guild of America, Producers Guild of America, NAACP Image Awards, the American Film Institute and Monte Carlo Television Festival, among others. “Curb Your Enthusiasm” is executive produced by Larry David, Jeff Garlin, Gavin Polone, Alec Berg, David Mandel, Jeff Schaffer, Tim Gibbons and Erin O'Malley. Our schools should be community centers with a wide variety of after school and social/emotional programming. I believe ini- tiatives like Ryan Banks Academy can be game changers in addressing the issue of youth violence, which is a public health crisis.” - Arne Duncan, Former U.S. Secretary of Education Who is Ryan Banks? The vision for Ryan Banks Academy was born from tragedy. Ryan Banks was a happy-go-lucky 12 year old boy who was enthusiastic, full of life, always curious, and loved to make others laugh. While he had a difficult upbringing and had every reason to be angry, he was one of the happiest seventh graders to ever walk the hallways of New Sullivan Elementary School, on Chicago’s far-east side. But on May 19, 2012, Niazi “Ryan” Banks was shot and killed by gun- fire. Ryan was a very special child who had the entire world ahead of him. However, Ryan is just one of far too many Chicago students who are lost to gun violence each year. In addition to the chil- dren and teens who are lost to senseless acts of violence, thousands more fall through the cracks in other ways—those who do not receive the proper academic and social/emotional sup- port they need at the school level, live in an unsafe neighborhood, and those who are dealing with trauma within their family environment.

IRONIC FEMINISM: RHETORICAL CRITIQUE IN SATIRICAL NEWS A Dissertation Presented to the Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Rhetorics, Communication, and Information Design by Kathy Elrick December 2016 Accepted by Dr. David Blakesley, Committee Chair Dr. Jeff Love Dr. Brandon Turner Dr. Victor J. Vitanza ABSTRACT Ironic Feminism: Rhetorical Critique in Satirical News aims to offer another perspective and style toward feminist theories of public discourse through satire. This study develops a model of ironist feminism to approach limitations of hegemonic language for women and minorities in U.S. public discourse. The model is built upon irony as a mode of perspective, and as a function in language, to ferret out and address political norms in dominant language. In comedy and satire, irony subverts dominant language for a laugh; concepts of irony and its relation to comedy situate the study’s focus on rhetorical contributions in joke telling. How are jokes crafted? Who crafts them? What is the motivation behind crafting them? To expand upon these questions, the study analyzes examples of a select group of popular U.S.

1 COM 321, Documentary Form in Film, Television, & Interactive Media Humor and the Documentary The Four Humor Mechanisms (Neuendorf & Skalski et al.; see also the extended handout on the class web site) 1. Disparagement: Focusing on a perception of superiority, a one-up/one-down relationship, e.g., “putdown” humor, satire, sarcasm, self-deprecation, and the display of stupid behaviors (Freud, 1960; Hobbes, 1651/1981) 2. Incongruity: The juxtaposition of inconsistent or incongruous elements, e.g., wordplay (e.g., puns), “pure” incongruity, absurdity, and sight gags (Schopenhauer in Martin, 2007; Koestler, 1964). 3. Arousal/Dark: The creation of a high level of physiological arousal, e.g., slapstick, dark humor, sick humor, and sexual or naughty humor (Kant & Spencer; Spencer, 1860; Berlyne, 1972). 4. Social currency: Playful interaction, or building a sense of group belonging or understanding, e.g., joking to fit in, joking around socially, inside jokes, and parody (relying on a shared view of a known form, such as a film genre) (Chapman, 1983; Fry, 1963). Satire vs. Parody Parody deals with literary/cinematic norms (at the level of the cultural product) Satire deals with social/political norms (at the level of the culture or society) There is sometimes confusion between the two, perhaps because they may be used together (e.g., Western movie parody + satire on racism = Blazing Saddles) Four Stages of Genre Development (Giannetti and others) 1. Primitive 2. Classical 3. Revisionist 4. Parodic 2 Humor and Documentaries: 1. [Social] Satire

There's nothing funny about it. But survival, and what it takes to survive, there can be humor in that.” -Rob Reiner, Director “I am…privy to many of the films that are released on a yearly basis about the Holocaust. I cannot think of one project that has taken the approach of THE LAST LAUGH. THE LAST LAUGH dispels the notion that there is nothing new to say or to reveal on the subject because this aspect of survival is one that very few have explored in print and no one that I know of has examined in a feature documentary.” -Richard Tank, Executive Director at the Simon Wiesenthal Center SHORT SYNOPSIS THE LAST LAUGH is a feature documentary about what is taboo for humor, seen through the lens of the Holocaust and other seemingly off-limits topics, in a society that prizes free speech.

HUMOR AND PHILOSOPHY IN THE MOVIES OF JOEL AND ETHAN COEN A Report of a Senior Study by Geoffrey Bokuniewicz Major: Writing/Communication Maryville College Spring, 2014 Date approved ___________, by _____________________ Faculty Supervisor Date approved ___________, by _____________________ Division Chair Abstract This is a two-part senior thesis revolving around the works of the film writer/directors Joel and Ethan Coen. The first seven chapters deal with the humor and philosophy of the Coens according to formal theories of humor and deep explication of their cross-film themes. Though references are made to most of their films in the study, the five films studied most in-depth are Fargo, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men, Burn After Reading, and A Serious Man. The study looks at common structures across both the Coens’ comedies and dramas and also how certain techniques make people laugh. Above all, this is a study on the production of humor through the lens of two very funny writers. This is also a launching pad for a prospective creative screenplay, and that is the focus of Chapter 8. In that chapter, there is a full treatment of a planned script as well as a significant portion of written script up until the first major plot point. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS Page Chapter - Introduction VII I The Pattern Recognition Theory of Humor in Burn After Reading 1 Explanation and Examples 1 Efficacy and How It Could Help Me 12 II Benign Violation Theory in The Big Lebowski and 16 No Country for Old Men Explanation and Examples
