Lee, Chair This dissertation traces flattened affects in twentieth- and twenty-first-century Asian American and Chinese literature, original ethnographic fieldwork, and film that imagine circuits of migration and capital between China and the U.S. following China’s entry into the global economy. This project builds on interest in Third World and Afro-Asian legacies in Asian American Studies and on considerations of the transpacific as a transnational field shaped by but also exceeding nation-based formations. I do so to propose a postsocialist framework that considers emergent possibilities for transnational affiliations and forms of agency following economic reform in China, when it was once a communist world revolutionary touchstone. This postsocialist framework seeks to make visible forms of agency that take shape through non-revolutionary affects, such as ambivalence and detachment, that do not seek to clearly overthrow a situation. Instead, they enable living on within dominant nation-based projects tied to capital without full affective commitment to them. ii Specifically, the narratives this project examines center sites of gendered affective care labor within and outside the family as arenas through which to apprehend and learn to navigate these still- changing and emergent postsocialist conditions. Rather than affects commonly demanded of caretaking relations, such as complete emotional regard, availability, and investment, these narratives elaborate on valences of flatness as a way of traversing and living on within China-U.S. circuits through caring for the self and others. Flatness enables the figures of these narratives to do so without fully acquiescing to either Chinese imperatives to cultivate the self and family for the nation’s economic prosperity or U.S. imaginations of Asians as economic resource and threat. My first chapter examines Ha Jin’s The Crazed (2002) and Yiyun Li’s Kinder Than Solitude (2014) to consider how flattened affects are differentially available in different gendered subject positions in the wake of China’s accelerated economic growth and increasing ties between China and the U.S. from 1989 onward. Chapter Two elaborates on original ethnographic fieldwork in Beijing, China (2017) to consider how my primarily female interview subjects who have lived through the Maoist era and China’s reform formulate flatness as healthful and desirable mode of caring for themselves and others to navigate and live with the unassimilable aspects of these vast changes. Chapter Three considers Chinese investigative journalist Chai Jing’s air pollution documentary Under the Dome (2015) and Chang-rae Lee’s On Such a Full Sea (2014) to elucidate how gendered affective care is a racialized technology that extends into a speculative, technologized future. The project ends with a coda on Boots Riley’s feature film Sorry to Bother You (2018) to further mine how transnational forms of gendered care work underwrite contemporary imaginations of the evolving global economy and possibilities for contesting its structures. iii The dissertation of Kathryn Cai is approved. She will be a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the Interdisciplinary Humanities at Wake Forest University beginning in fall 2019. viiii Introduction Care Work and Affect in Transpacific Postsocialist Circuits This dissertation traces affective stances that enable orientations to large-scale conditions that are continuing to shift in the present. In particular, I examine in twentieth- and twenty-first- century Chinese and Asian American narratives that that grapple with China’s entry into the global economy, which officially began in 1978 and accelerated in the 1980s and 1990s. As is widely discussed in the Western popular media and academic scholarship alike, China’s economic growth on a massive scale has rendered it a significant global economic and geopolitical player, with far- reaching but shifting and unknown consequences. 1 China, however, has long been a globally significant site and actor. Maoist China once served as a historic touchstone for global Marxist and Third World movements and exemplified the possibility of a revolution that would overturn not just a capitalist but a racist and imperialist world order. 2 As scholars in Asian American studies increasingly consider the potentialities that Third World solidarities have for the racial and class politics of the present, 3 this project investigates how contemporary imaginations of China-U.S. circuits insist on the need to grapple with the emerging conditions of China’s economic reform. Far from a process with a clear end point and parameters, the drastic changes to local and global conditions are continuing to unfold in the present. The imaginative literature, original ethnography, and film I examine accordingly turn to murkier affects to sense and navigate these still-emerging and uncertain conditions.     CHAPTER 5 How the personal became (and remains) political in the visual arts Catriona Moore and Catherine Speck Second-wave feminism ushered in major changes in the visual arts around the idea that the personal is political. It introduced radically new content, materials and forms of art practice that are now characterised as central to postmodern and contemporary art. Moreover, longstanding feminist exercises in ‘personal-political’ consciousness-raising spearheaded the current use of art as a testing ground for various social interventions and participatory collaborations known as ‘social practice’ both in and outside of the art gallery.1 Times change, however, and contemporary feminism understands the ‘personal’ and the ‘political’ a little differently today. The fragmentation of women’s liberation, debates around essentialism within feminist art and academic circles, and institutional changes within the art world have prompted different processes and expressions of personal-political consciousness-raising than those that were so central to the early elaboration of feminist aesthetics.     IN FOCUS: Revoicing the Screen Introduction by TESSA DWYER and JENNIFER o’mEARA, editors he paradoxes engendered by voice on-screen are manifold. Screen voices both leverage and disrupt associations with agency, presence, immediacy, and intimacy. Concurrently, they institute artifice and distance, otherness and uncanniness. Screen voices are always, to an extent, disembodied, partial, and Tunstable, their technological mediation facilitating manipulation, remix, and even subterfuge. The audiovisual nature of screen media places voice in relation to— yet separate from—the image, creating gaps and connections between different sensory modes, techniques, and technologies, allowing for further disjunction and mismatch. These elusive dynamics of screen voices—whether on-screen or off-screen, in dialogue or voice-over, as soundtrack or audioscape— have already been much commented on and theorized by such no- tables as Rick Altman, Michel Chion, Rey Chow, Mary Ann Doane, Kaja Silverman, and Mikhail Yampolsky, among others.1 Focusing primarily on cinema, these scholars have made seminal contribu- tions to the very ways that film and screen media are conceptual- ized through their focus on voice, voice recording and mixing, and postsynchronization as fundamental filmmaking processes. Debido al confinamiento, todos los proyectos que tenía retrasados los estoy acabando, también pasando tiempo con la familia. Me monto mi horario, hacer ejercicio, trabajo, la familia… nunca antes lo había podido tener. Normalmente siempre estaba trabajando, siempre ando liado con muchos proyectos, en realidad demasiados… pero luego cuando no hago nada, me preocupo por no estar haciendo nada. D: Sabes, al principio de este podcast estaba hablando, de cómo se están cancelando grandes conciertos, grandes eventos, pero esto no significa que la música vaya a desaparecer, y me ha venido a la cabeza lo que pasó en Sevilla con Antonio Saavedra, el cantante de flamenco, ¿te acuerdas? B: Sí, estábamos en el café, en Sevilla, él apareció, le “pillé” el ritmo cogí el móvil, y todo listo. Creo además, que se volvió viral y sonó en algunas radios. D: Así que crees que como están las cosas, es momento de volver a la música como algo más local, más de pequeño formato, no todo tienen que ser grandes eventos. Disfrutar de la música de todos modos, no necesitas tener 20mil personas a tu alrededor para ver un buen concierto o cualquier tipo de arte B: Creo que a estas alturas en realidad ya es así de alguna manera. Míralo de este punto de vista, en los 90’s necesitabas tener un contrato discográfico, al menos en los EEUU.
