  • Castrovince | October 23Rd, 2016 CLEVELAND -- the Baseball Season Ends with Someone Else Celebrating
C's the day before: Chicago, Cleveland ready By Anthony Castrovince / MLB.com | @castrovince | October 23rd, 2016 CLEVELAND -- The baseball season ends with someone else celebrating. That's just how it is for fans of the Indians and Cubs. And then winter begins, and, to paraphrase the great meteorologist Phil Connors from "Groundhog Day," it is cold, it is gray and it lasts the rest of your life. The city of Cleveland has had 68 of those salt-spreading, ice-chopping, snow-shoveling winters between Tribe titles, while Chicagoans with an affinity for the North Siders have all been biding their time in the wintry winds since, in all probability, well before birth. Remarkably, it's been 108 years since the Cubs were last on top of the baseball world. So if patience is a virtue, the Cubs and Tribe are as virtuous as they come. And the 2016 World Series that arrives with Monday's Media Day - - the pinch-us, we're-really-here appetizer to Tuesday's intensely anticipated Game 1 at Progressive Field -- is one pitting fan bases of shared circumstances and sentiments against each other. These are two cities, separated by just 350 miles, on the Great Lakes with no great shakes in the realm of baseball background, and that has instilled in their people a common and eventually unmet refrain of "Why not us?" But for one of them, the tide will soon turn and so, too, will the response: "Really? Us?" Yes, you. Imagine what that would feel like for Norman Rosen. He's 90 years old and wise to the patience required of Cubs fandom.

Thank you. A Summer Wildfire: How the greatest debut in baseball history peaked and dwindled over the course of three months by Colin Thomas Reynolds, M.A. The University of Texas at Austin, 2011 SUPERVISORS: Tracy Dahlby & Bill Minutaglio The narrative itself is an ageless one, a fundamental Shakespearean tragedy in its progression. A young man is deemed invaluable and exalted by the public. The hero is cast into the spotlight and bestowed with insurmountable expectations. But the acclamations and pressures are burdensome and the invented savior fails to fulfill the prospects once imagined by the public. He is cast aside, disregarded as a symbol of failure or one deserving of pity. It’s the quintessential tragedy of a fallen hero. The protagonist of this report is Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg, who enjoyed a phenomenal rookie season before it ended abruptly due to a severe elbow injury.

NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS ASSOCIATION (February 17, 2021) ncbwa.com FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Bo Carter (214‐418‐6132); Mike Montoro (304‐293‐2821) NCBWA DENOTES 21St ANNUAL 2021 NCAA DIVISION I PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA TEAMS DALLAS – After a season shortened by COVID‐19 and no NCAA Championship activity in 2020, the 21st annual NCBWA Division I preseason All‐America teams bring hope to student‐athletes, coaches and fans awaiting the beginning of 2021 DI play Friday. A two‐time member of the NCBWA preseason dream team, Vanderbilt pitching ace Kumar Rocker returns from a 2019 season when he paced the Commodores to the latest NCAA title with a 12‐5 record, 114 strikeouts in 99‐ plus innings and a first‐ever NCAA Super Regional no‐hitter against Duke. After going 2‐1 in 2020’s abbreviated action with a 1.80 earned run average and 28 strikeouts in 15 innings of work, the junior righthander headlines a stellar first team mound staff among the All‐America selections. The five starting pitchers on the top unit posted an impressive 13‐1 mark (.929 composite winning percentage), struck out 140 opposing hitters in 103 1/3 total innings (12.2 strikeouts every nine innings) and number besides Rocker team aces Jack Leiter of Vanderbilt, Jordan Wicks of Kansas State, Zach Pettway of UCLA and Connor Prielipp of Alabama. The first team relief corps put up equally impressive numbers with 22 saves in just 29 appearances and a pair of 0.00 ERAs by Oklahoma’s Jason Ruffcorn and Louisville’s Michael Kirian.
