One of the most useful tools for the Athletic Department at Magruder High School is the Athletic Coaches’ Manual. Almost all associations including the Maryland Public Secondary School Athletic Association, counties, leagues, and various conferences, publish a handbook with specific regulations that member coaches and schools must follow. Each individual school is unique and thus has its own set of additional rules that may be different or more restrictive than those at other schools.

It is because of these differences that each coach is issued a handbook to communicate our expectations. Karl Heimbach, CMAA The coaches get a copy at the pre-season staff meeting and are strongly encouraged to familiarize themselves with its contents.

Our Athletic Coaches’ Manual describes the rules, policies, procedures and framework by which our Athletic Department functions. This manual is revised on an annual basis so that changes and improvements can be made as warranted. Suggestions for changes or additions can come from the Athletic Department, the Administration or the Coaching Staff. Each coach is required to sign the last page as evidence that they have read and understand the policies by which Magruder High School operates.

The following topics are included in our Athletic Coaches’ Manual:

Philosophy of Interscholastic Athletics Medical Examination and Records Academic Progress and Reports Medical Supplies Administration Officials Awards Out of Area / Overnight Trips Building Use and Requests Parent Meetings Cheerleaders Parent Permission Slips/Forms County Meetings PomPoms Early Dismissal of Students Postponement Procedures Early Practice Risk Management Procedures Extracurricular Fee Reporting Scores Evaluation Procedures Requisitions and Purchasing Faculty and Departmental Meetings Scheduling Field Preparation Security Fundraising Activities Sportsmanship Forms Injuries Student Attendance Inventory Procedures Student Eligibility Job Description Substance Abuse Policy Keys Team Rosters Locker Room Supervision Team Standards Lost Equipment Telephone Calls Maintenance of Locker and Team Rooms Volunteer Coaches Requirements Medical Cards Transportation Policies Weight Room Policies

With the increasing number of coaches who either instruct outside our building or are classified as emergency coaches and not unit members of Montgomery County Public Schools, they need to have a complete coaches’ manual with explanations and sample forms. This is vital. The few minutes spent at the coaches meeting, highlighting key points of emphasis and changes from the previous year will save time in the long run and avoid potential problems during each season. A Copy of our Athletic Coaches’ Manual can be received as an attachment by sending 2 an e-mail to Karl Heimbach at [email protected] Maryland State Athletic Directors Association 2006 MSADA Conference Highlights

Each year the officers or representatives from Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia and District of Columbia gather at a pre-determined location, in a host state, for these meetings. Discussion this summer centered around the NIAAA’s five year Strategic Plan. The NIAAA, like the MSADA is a professional organization for Athletic Administrators. “The mission of the NIAAA is to develop, enhance and preserve the educational values of interscholastic athletics. The NIAAA serves its members by providing resources to develop and enhance leadership skills and by offering opportunities for professional growth.” The new Strategic Plan is designed to continue to meet this mission.

You as members of the MSADA should take advantage of the opportunity to become a member of the NIAAA, if you have not already done so. This organization exists for you. Our goal in Maryland is to continue to encourage our state members to join this worthwhile professional organization. The benefits of membership far outweigh the annual fee. For information about the NIAAA please go to the website at: www.niaaa.org Apologies Apologies Apologies

Our apologies to Mike Lafferty, CAA at Dulaney High School for the mistakes in our conference wrap up newsletter. Below is the correct information

Help Wanted With so many talented Athletic Administrators within the State of Maryland it only seems feasible to assume that out there somewhere is an individual who has the inner talents of vocabulary, penmanship, and creative writing. If these qualities describe you, then the MSADA is looking for your help. The Executive Council is seeking a qualified person for the position of Editor for the MSADA Newsletter.

The newsletter goes out three times a year and a trained eye for grammar, a keen literary sense, and a polished use of vocabulary would be a welcomed commodity by the Executive Council. If you would like to get involved with your state organization by offering your time in this capacity please contact Lee Dove, CAA, your MSADA President at: [email protected] ○ ○

Summer Institute 2005 and New AD Workshop Wrap-Up MSADA held its second “Summer Institute” at Magruder High School on July 25, 2005 and everyone who attended enjoyed a day of professional development while seeing old friends and making new contacts in a relaxed setting. At the “Summer Institute”, five LTC classes were offered and the CAA exam. Over thirty athletic administrators took advantage of the classes and two individuals took the CAA exam. The courses offered were: LTC 501 Philosophy, Leadership Organizations and Professional Programs Taught by Dr. David Hoch, CMAA, Loch Raven High School and Jim Horn, CAA, South Carroll High School

LTC 503 Citizenship Through Sports and Fine Arts Taught by Mike Lafferty, CAA, Dulaney High School and Winfield Johnson of Virginia

LTC 508 Management Strategies and Organization Techniques Taught by Karl Heimbach, CMAA, Magruder High School

LTC 504 Legal Issues 1 (Risk Management) Taught by Mike Williams, CMAA, Coordinator of Athletics for Howard County and Ron Belinko, CMAA, Coordinator of Athletics for Baltimore County

LTC 514 Dealing With Challenging Personalities Taught by Dr. David Hoch, CMAA, Loch Raven High School

The first annual “New AD Workshop” which included LTC 502 was held at Magruder High School on July 28, 2005 and attended by 22 individuals. The workshop included practical suggestions, guidelines and handouts from experienced athletic directors from around the state to help the new athletic director succeed. This workshop was designed by Dr. David Hoch, CMAA, Loch Raven High School and included the help from the following athletic directors:

Karl Heimbach, CMAA, Magruder High School and Mike Lafferty, CAA, Dulaney High School

One of the main goals of the MSADA is to promote the NIAAA certification process and to enhance the professional development for our members. The “Summer Institute” and “New AD Workshop” allowed individuals to complete the requirements for RAA certification in one week within our own state while also allowing athletic directors the opportunity to take the CAA exam or take additional courses necessary for CAA or CMAA certification.

Plans are underway for the 3rd “Summer Institute” and “New AD Workshop” for next summer. In addition, we hope that more counties will host LTC courses like Washington and Baltimore counties did this summer as part of their In-service Meetings or Professional Development Days. The expansion of our state faculty and the ability to offer new and different LTC classes that have not been offered before by the MSADA is an 10 important aspect of the MSADA as we move forward to meet your needs. 2005-2006 MSADA Membership Name School Name School ALLEN, BARBARA PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR HS JOHNSON, OWEN RETIRED AMBROSE, TIM MIDDLETOWN HIGH SCHOOL KALISZ, MIKE (CAA) HEREFORD HIGH SCHOOL ANDERSON, DAVID (CAA) HENRY E LACKEY HIGH SCHOOL KALMANOWICZ, THAD QUEEN ANNE’S COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOL SYS ANSELL, CAROL (CAA) DR SAMUEL L BANKS HIGH SCHOOL KEENEY, MIKE HIGH SCHOOL BAKER, PERRY BRUNSWICK HIGH SCHOOL KELLINGER, MICHAEL RICHARD MONTGOMERY HIGH SCHOOL BATES, BARBARA (CAA) W.
