HAL MARCH . . .
Hal March, 35-year-old actor-comedian, won the assignment of master of ceremonies for “The $64,000 Question” after some 300 candidates had been screened for the role, including top emcees in radio and television, commentators, Broadway actors, screen stars and others.
The career of the personable host of “The $64,000 Question” program has ranged from amateur welterweight boxer on the West Coast during his late teens to nightclub and vaudeville comedian, film actor and featured per former (dramatic actor as well as comedian) on some of the most popular radio and television shows.
March was bom in San Francisco. After graduation from high school there, he joined a nightclub act which traveled about California. Hal continued as a nightclub performer until 1941, when he joined the Army and served as a radar operator in the Coast Artillery.
After receiving his discharge from the Service at the end of 1943, he went into radio acting in San Francisco. Six months later he was in Hollywood as half of the comedy team of Sweeny and March, who were heard on CBS stations for 89 weeks.
In 1947 he appeared frequently as guest artist on the “Perry Como Supper Club” and did guest stints on many of the comedy programs, including those of Jack Benny, Jackie Gleason, Jimmy Durante, and Bob Hope. He was Harry Morton, the “next door neighbor” on the Burns and Allen radio program, and when the pair went on television he continued in the role for a while. Subsequently, the Sweeny and March combination was reactivated and performed as a disc jockey pair for a year. Last season Hal played the part of Imogene Coca’s husband on her television series and co-starred (and co-authored) with Tom d’Andrea in their own series, “The Soldiers,” In the movies, Hal played Gus Edwards in “The Eddie Cantor Story,” the second male lead in “Yankee Pasha” and was a prize-fighter in “It’s Always Pair Weather,” which starred Gene Kelly, Dan Dailey and Cyd Charisse. Most recently, he co-starred with Vivian Blaine in Elmer Rice’s “Dream Girl” on Maurice Evans * Hall of Fame color spectacular.
Hal is married to Candy Toxton. His mother, three sisters and a brother live in San Francisco. He is the first member of his family to enter show business. He says he was bitten by the acting bug at the age of 12, when he appeared in a homespun operetta staged by his junior high school class.
March has an emest ambition to become a “serious writer” some day and for a long time has been at work on a psychological novel in which he develops six conflicting facets of one man’s character.
He collects recordings and is avidly interested in sports. During his high school years he played football, basketball and baseball on the school teams and during his few years as an amateur boxer in San Francisco he fought 25 bouts. 11 Congratulations . . .

REIGNING APPLE FESTIVAL QUEEN
From a typical teen-ager to a state beauty queen is the brief, happy story of Murphysboro’s 1957 Apple Festival Queen.
Not a glamour girl, nor a sophisticated lady, Lyn Weatherly, at the age of 16 was a shy, pretty girl who had made the honors club each year and managed to engage in numerous extra-curricular activities.
A junior at Murphysboro Township High School, she danced to rock ’n roll, was a regular swimmer, sewed her own dresses, and centered her cooking around frying an egg or a hamburger.
A blue eyed, taffy-blond with a soft voice, she was the judges’ choice over 21 contestants for possessing the combined qualities of grace, charm, poise and beauty.
As the Apple Festival Queen for 1957, Lyn went on to represent the area in the Illinois Fruit Queen contest in Springfield, and came home with the honors and a new crown.
Born in Murphysboro, and named Marilyn Frances, Lyn is the daughter of Mrs. Almira Weatherly and the late Julian "Ridge" Weatherly, former physical education instructor at MTHS. She received her grade school education at Logan.
Hoping to follow in her “daddy’s” footsteps, Lyn plans to attend Car thage College and become a physical education teacher.
As a cheerleader for the past three years, she has been a familiar part of the scenery at MTHS sporting events.
In other activities at school, she was secretary-treasurer of her class in the freshman and sophomore years, vice president of the Future Teachers of America during the junior year, a member of the commerce club and the Sub Juniors, and was an attendant to the Homecoming Queen during her freshman and sophomore years.
She finds typing and shorthand her favorite subjects, and manages to get extra experience in those fields in her capacity as a part-time reception ist for her uncle, Dr. James A. Weatherly.
As a senior this year at MTHS, she will be accompanied to classes by her brother, 14-year-old Bill, who will be a freshman. Lyn and her family are members of the First Baptist Church.
As the reigning Murphysboro Apple Festival Queen, Lyn will be the center of attraction on a float in the grand parade, and will preside at the queen coronation Sept. 20 when she will be succeeded by the Apple Fes tival Queen of 1958. 15 KEEP YOUR DIAL SET AT 1420 KC E. A. KRAFT

THE LAST SEVEN YEARS
Murphysboro’s 6-year-old Apple Festival hit the big time in 1957. The festival idea, born in Murphysboro in 1952 and expanded yearly, mark ed its greatest success in 1957, in a three-day-show. The 1958 show, billed for Sept. 18-19-20, is being groomed to take its place in a continuing line-of successful promotions. Last year the headline attraction was television star George DeWitt, of the weekly show, “Name That Tune.” This year the star of the big final day program on Saturday will be Hal March, the question man of the “$64,000 Question” show.
Last year the Murphysboro Festival received a well deserved boost when Festival Queen Lyn Weatherly went on to win top state honors as Miss Illinois Fruit Queen.

The 1957 drum and bugle corps contest on Saturday night was advanced to official contest status, and this year will be expanded to include eight of the top midwestem groups. Murphysboro’s first Apple Festival arose suddenly in September of 1952. The Retail Interest Committee of the Chamber of Commerce originated the promotion by staging a quickly-fashioned queen contest. The first choice proved an excellent one. Miss Shirley Eaton, a senior student at Murphysboro Township High School, won the first Miss Egypt Contest, and two weeks later walked off with the blue ribbon as Miss Illinois Fruit Queen in the state contest in Hardin. Another high school senior, Miss Dorothy Bergsmiller, won the 1953 Festi val crown, and represented Murphysboro the following night in the state contest in the shell at Riverside Park. Murphysboro had the big show in 1953..... the Illinois State Fruit Contest. As the home of the reigning queen, Murphysboro was host to queen con testants from all other fruit areas of the state. The Festival committee served 8 barrels of free cider the first year, a Festival trademark retained year by year, even through the years of the short apple crop in 1954-55. 21 A VOTE FOR THE DEMOCRATIC slate

In 1954 the opening day’s program was expanded through the Kiwanis’ kiddie parade, featuring pets and hobbies. Queen contestants were intro duced to a football crowd Friday night.
Miss Carol Carter of Ava, a trim blonde who captivated the judges with a poised attitude, breezed through the finals to take the 1954 Apple Festi val Queen Crown.
A killing frost early in 1955 wiped out a large part of the area’s crop, and apples were a scarce item in Southern Illinois.
The Eckert Orchards helped in the apple roundup, and the Festival’s free cider and donut policy continued without interruption.
The 1955 show marked the first appearance of the Black Knights Drum and Bugle Corps of Belleville. The snappy performance of the marching unit in the grand parade and in a night exhibition stamped the Black Knights as a Festival participant for years to come.
The 1955 queen contest drew 17 entries, one of the largest groups to seek queen honors. Miss Kathy Etherton, a Murphysboro High School senior, won the contest, and represented the Southern Illinois apple in dustry at the state contest in Moline.
The 1956 Festival produced a major innovation in a* drum and bugle corps exhibition featuring four of the visiting units, the Black Knights of Belleville, the Purple Panthers of St. Louis, the all-girl Bellettes of Belleville, and the Corvets of Jerseyville. 23 Fair Acres

Free cider and donut service will start Saturday morning. Other activities include the apple pie baking contest, the grand parade, preliminary queen judging at an afternoon tea, the drum and bugle corps contest, and the coronation of the 1958 queen. Hal March will be grand marshal of the parade, and master of ceremonies for the final queen coronation. The Festival committee is promoting its main product this year, the apple sales will be a primary feature in the courthouse concession stand area. Apples are to be sold in lots from one to a bushel, and they will be the cream of the crop from area producers. The 1958 show will open Thursday, Sept. 18, with rides and concession stands around the courthouse. The Murphysboro Red Hots will sponsor an outdoor square dance Thursday night near the southeast corner of the courthouse. Friday’s program will include the Kiwanis kiddie pet and hobby parade in the afternoon. Queen contestants will be introduced at a football game Friday night.

The part that chance played in the development of the most famous apple in the world took place near Peru, Iowa. Jesse Hiatt was living on a farm near by. He had a cider-press, where he made cider forhimself and sometimes “accomodated” his neighbors. When he was through “pressing”, he would dump out the seeds. One spring he noticed that a seedling sprout had come up. He cut it down. But the next spring it was up again. He said, “I guess if it’s that anxious to live, I’ll let it. The sprout grew into a tree and at last the tree bore—dramatically—one apple. Jesse Hiatt sank a tooth and got a surprise; it was the best he’d ever tasted. Scientists, who have studied the whole thing, say it was a “seedling.” In case you’re not up on seedlings, a seedling comes from a seed. That is, a seed can be planted and, after nature has whispered to it, the seed becomes a tree. (Remember how Johnny Appleseed went through Ohio with a bag of apple seeds over his shoulder?) He would stomp a hole in the ground with his boot heel, drop some seeds and mosey on again. Seed lings came up. The seedling was probably what the professors call a mutant. It came from a seed in which the chromosome arrangement, which determines the variety, has been disturbed, maybe by a cosmic ray. The seed might have come from a Bellflower or a Pippin or a Maiden Blush. A mutant is a sud den departure from hereditary traits. Sometimes this happens in animals and farmers call them sports. Next year, instead of a lone sentinel, there was an apronful of apples on the tree and Jesse Hiatt’s heart thumped like a jaybird’s. The third year the tree really went to town and so did Jesse Hiatt, with the finest apples anybody ever did see. The apples were peculiarly shaped and pecularily colored. The color was a kind of strawberry roan. The shape oddest of all; on the blossom end were five knobs, each about as big as a baby’s knuckle. Ordinarily an apple has a smooth round end, but not this orphan that had suddenly appeared on the plains of Ioway. The old gentleman named the apple “Hawkeye,” built a fence around it and cared for it tenderly. Then Jesse Hiatt hit upon a nice little source of income: county fairs. Among the displays devoted to corn and wheat and mules there was al ways one given over to apples and other fruits of the farm. The apples were piled on plates, with the name of the grower on a piece of paper under the plate. When judging time came, three learned men would arrive and each take a bite out of an apple; then pass on to the next apple until they found one that set them dancing in the aisle. Each time Jesse Hiatt entered his apples, he walked off with first prize. The money was pretty handsome for those days, sometimes as much as $20. There was to be a fair at Louisiana, Missouri, and old Jesse Hiatt, of course, sent his apples, the year 1894.
Louisiana was the home of Stark Brothers, a nursery that had been passed down from father to son for eighty years. C. M. Stark, the senior member of the firm, was a judge at the fair and when he tasted one of the Hiatt apples his face lit up like a lantern in a barn. It was the best apple he’d ever come across in his life.
But the piece of paper under the plate had been lost and no man knew whence had come the apple. Naturally, as a Stark, he wanted it for his own.
Mr. Stark knew there would be an exhibit the following year, so he per sonally tripled the prize money. Sure enough, the apple turned up, just as he knew it would.
He sent off a letter to Peru, Iowa. Back came an answer in a stiffish hand, for a plow-handle doesn’t add to the art of penmanship. Yes, he had growed the apples, out by the turnip-patch, past the hayrick, said Jesse Hiatt.
Mr. Stark flew like a homing pigeon, straight to Peru and there, with his own eyes, saw the tree. Like Hiatt said, it “happened. ” All the scientists in the world might never have done the trick. Did the cutting down of the sprout have something to do with it? No one knew. The two looked upon it, like parents upon a new-born child. And something of the mystery of creation entered in upon them, for here was something that had never be fore existed in all the world and now it was here and smiling at them. Durned if the thing wasn’t miraculous.
“Will you sell me the right to propagate it?’’ asked Mr. Stark.
Jesse Hiatt pulled his beard, “I just don’t know, rightly. How much you got in mind to offer?’’
“I’ve got some marketing ideas. Could we work out a royalty arrange ment?’’
“Likely I’d be interested.’’ His voice filled up; Jesse Hiatt did indeed believe in his apple. “It’s a mighty good eatin’ fruit. I’d like to see it grown around, wide-spread.”
And so they made a deal, the two standing in front of the precocious tree. Stark took some of the sprouts back to Missouri. And on the way he mused. “Must have a suitable name, ” he said to himself. “Hawkeye is too local.”
He carried with him a little red book in which he jotted down, from time to time, names he thought would be suitable for Stark plants. This time he didn’t hesitate, for he knew the name he wanted—Delicious. C. M. Stark launched the biggest advertising campaign ever known in apple history. The apple was a success from the start and became the best liked and most famous apple in the world. The year he started to exploit it was 1895; in 1945 the Delicious celebrated its fiftieth birthday with speeches, seemingly, by everybody who had ever tasted one. 33 HIGHWAY 51, ONE MILE NORTH of DE SOTO

MURPHYSBORO APPLE FESTIVAL JUNIOR DRUM AND BUGLE CORPS CONTEST . . .
On Saturday evening, September the 20th at 6:30 PM CST, on the Mur physboro High School Athletic Field, there will be held the biggest Drum and Bugle Contest ever seen in Southern Illinois. Some of the finest units in the country will participate in this Second Annual Contest held in conjunction with the 7th Annual Murphysboro Apple Festival. This con test is open to the world and is held under the auspices of the 49th State Drum and Bugle Corps Association. The judges are All-American Associ ation Judges, who are authorities in their respective fields and it is their bounden duty to determine the capability of each unit in the respective department which they are judging. There are judges for inspection, marching and maneuvering, bugling, drumming, general effects, and tim ing. You the people can enjoy a competition because of the watchfulness and hard work of these judges. This contest is for Junior Drum and Bugle Corps only. The following cash awards will be made.

68 TOPSY TURVY APPLE PECAN PIE cup1/4 softened butter or margarine 6 cups sliced summer apples 1/2 cup pecan halves (about 2 1/2 lbs.) 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 2/3 cup brown sugar, 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg firmly packed 1 tablespoon flour 1/4 teaspoon salt Pastry for 2-crust pie 1/2 cup sugar Spread softened butter evenly on botton and sides of 9-inch pie pan. Press pecan halves, rounded side down into butter. Pat brown sugar evenly over pecans. Roll out enough pastry for 1 crust; place in pie pan over sugar; trim, leaving 1/2-inch overhang. Combine apples, lemon juice, flour, sugar, spices and salt; pour into pie pan, keeping top level. Top with remaining pastry; trim even with bottom crust; fold edges together, flush with rim, and flute. Prick top of pie with fork. Bake in hot oven, 450F., 10 minutes; reduce heat to moderate, 350F.; bake 30 to 45 minutes longer, or until apples are tender. Remove from oven. When syrup in pan stops bubbling, place serving plate over pie and invert. Care fully remove pie pan. Serve hot.

70 SLICED BAKED APPLES, DIXIE 8 cups thinly sliced apples 2 tablespoons butter or 1/2 cup golden, seedless raisins margarine 1 cup orange Juice 2 tablespoons grated 1/3 cup flour orange peel 1/3 cup sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 4 tablespoons peanut butter 1/2 cup salted peanuts
Pour apples into 2-qt. casserole. Add raisins and orange juice. Combine remaining ingredients, except peanuts; mix until crumbly; sprinkle over apples. Scatter salted peanuts over all. Bake in moderate oven, 375F., about 45 minutes, or until apples are soft. Makes 8 to 10 servings.

72 DUTCH APPLE CAKE 2 cups sifted enriched flour 1 cup whipping cream 3 tablespoons sugar 3 to 4 summer apples 3 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 2 tablespoons melted butter or margarine
Mix and sift first 4 ingredients. Whip cream; blend in lightly with a fork. Spread in greased 9-inch square cake pan. Pare, core and quarter apples; cut each quar ter into 3 slices. Arrange in parallel rows on dough; pressing edges into dough. Combine remaining 1/4 cup sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle evenly over apples. Pour melted butter or maragrine over all. Bake in hot oven, 400F., 30 minutes or until done when tested with a cake tester. Cut in squares. Serve with foamy sauce or cream. Make 9 servings. Nothing better was ever invented by the Dutch housewives of the American apple-growing districts. Serve hot or cold, with coffee.

Drain cranberry sauce, reserving juice. Add water to juice to make 2 cups. Set aside. Combine apples, sugar, butter, lemon juice, salt, spices and water in a deep frying pan. Cover; simmer over medium heat until apples are transparent, about 10 minutes. Baste occasionally with liquid in pan. Remove apples to heat proof serving dish. Add drained cranberries and brandy flavoring. Add cranberry liquid and tapioca to frying pan. Cook and stir over medium heat until mixture comes to a boil. Pour over fruit. Let stand 15 minutes; stir. Cool 15 minutes longer before serving. Serve with plain or whipped cream. Makes 6 servings. Here They Come!
