Sparrow Discography by Mike Callahan, David Edwards & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan Sparrow Records Discography Sparrow is a Contemporary Christian label founded in 1976 by Billy Ray Hearn. Hearn was the A&R Director for Word Records’ Myrrh label, founded a few years earlier also as a Contemporary Christian label. Sparrow also released records under their Birdwing subsidiary. Hearn’s Sparrow label was in competition with Hearn’s old boss, Word Records, and was quite successful. Even today, Sparrow is among the top Christian labels. Hearn sold the label to EMI in 1992, and it was placed under the Capitol Christian Music Group. Sparrow signed a distribution agreement with MCA in April, 1981 to release their product in the secular market while the regular Sparrow issues were distributed to Christian stores and Christian radio stations. The arrangement with MCA lasted until October, 1986, when Sparrow switched distribution to Capitol. This study narrates the import of rock music into church sanctuaries across America via the rise of contemporary worship music (CWM). While white evangelicals derided rock n’ roll as the “devil’s music” in the 1950s, it slowly made its way into their churches and beyond over the next fifty years, emerging as a multi-million dollar industry by the twenty-first century. This study is a cultural history of CWM, chronicling the rise of rock music in the worship life of American Christians. Pulling from several different primary and secondary sources, I argue that three main motivations fueled the rise of CWM in America: the desire to reach the lost, to commune in emotional intimacy with God, and to grow the flock.

  • Psalms, Lamentations, and Song of Songs
WHY SHOULD WE READ AND DISCUSS THE BOOKS OF THE BIBLE THAT ARE COLLECTIONS OF SONG LYRICS? We all know how to say the polite, respectable things about God. But how do we put into words our questions and doubts about God, our frustrations and disappointments with him? Is it proper to give a voice to our darkest spiritual experiences of suffering, depression, and despair? And if, on other occasions, we feel as if we’re experiencing a little bit of heaven right here on earth, how can we describe the glories we’re tasting? Where do we find the words, when words aren’t enough to begin with? Throughout the ages people have turned to song to express what the spoken word can barely convey. This has always been true of God’s people in particular. The songwriters of ancient Israel have left us a rich legacy. They created powerful expressions of the heights and depths of their experiences with God. Over the centuries people used those songs again and again to put their own experiences into words. Eventually many of these songs were gathered into the biblical books of Psalms, Lamentations, and Song of Songs. While their tunes have now been lost, their lyric poetry still speaks eloquently and evocatively today. In these compositions we encounter an incredibly broad and deep range of spiritual experiences, from people in the depths of despair barely hanging on to their faith to others basking in the glories of heaven on earth. We hear thoughts and feelings expressed that we may have had ourselves, but weren’t sure we could or should put into words.
