“POLIO’S WORST NIGHTMARE,” CONTINUES THE ROTARIAN FIGHT In an emotionally charged presentation to members of the Clayton County Rotary Club, Mr. William Nordmark (left) recently called on Rotarians worldwide to finish the fight against eradicating polio. Reporting that Rotary embraced the goal of eliminating polio in 1985, when the disease ravaged people in 125 countries, Mr. Nordmark said, “We are so very close and we do not want to be part of a group that did not finish what started so many years ago.”

Referred to as, “Polio’s Worst Nightmare,” Mr. Nordmark said that there are now only 306 cases of polio in three countries; however, factors in those three war-torn regions will make the last push extremely difficult for on-the- ground caregivers and supporters of the effort. Mr. Nordmark is the chair of the Polio Fundraising Campaign for District 6900. He has been an award-winning Rotarian since 1989 and opened his presentation with remarks on his long-standing relationships with Clayton County Rotarians Ben Loggins and Tommy Estes, and Tom and Claudia Mertl.

THIS WEEK’S ROTARY FOUNDATION MOMENT… HOW THE ROTARY FOUNDATION TOUCHED ONE PERSON’S LIFE: “What we do is touch other people . . . open the horizon to them . . . say ‘You matter.’ You see, the five men who chose me to become a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar are gone . . . but they are not. They never will be. Because along the way, I will in my own way share with others - and have - what those five men and the 60 members of the Marshall (Texas) Rotary and the tens of thousands of other members of Rotary did in 1956 when they said, ‘Bill Moyers, you can matter.’” Bill Moyers, TV Journalist, and former Deputy Director of the Peace Corps
