June 2019 Issue
January to June 2019 OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE CONSULATE GENERAL OF THE PHILIPPINES IN NEW YORK 556 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10036 • Telephone: 212-764-1330 • Website: www.newyorkpcg.org • Email: [email protected] • Visit us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PHLinNY/ Message on the Occasion of 121st Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence His Excellency Rodrigo Roa Duterte, President of the Philippines I am one with the Filipino people in commemorating the Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence. A hundred and twenty-one years has passed since our forefathers bound their fates, their lives and their fortunes to proclaim the independence of the Filipino people. It was the most significant event in our country’s history. Not only did we put an end to more than three centuries of subservience but we also resolved to determine the course of our own destiny as a nation. But the freedom we achieved back then was not without cost. The tree of liberty blossomed on these lands because it was nourished by the sweat and blood or our patriots, heroes and martyrs. Let us commit ourselves to ensure that their sacrifices have not been in vain and that their dream of a truly independent Philippines - whose people live freely in a secure, stable and prosperous society - will be achieved within our lifetimes. May we have a solemn and meaningful observance. ittle anila LOCT. - NOVEMBERM. Confidential2013 Boost Defense MANILA - China has to learn to “play by the rules” and the Philippines must sharply boost its defences to keep South China Sea territorial spats from escalating, two former US officials said Friday. The Philippines has consistently accused China of aggressively pressing its claim to most of the South China Sea, even up to the coasts of neighbours like the Philippines, raising tensions in the Asia-Pacific region. Speaking at the sidelines of a maritime security forum in Manila, ex-US defence undersecretary Walter Slocombe stressed that no one wanted to see a confrontation with China over territory. “We (military allies the Philippines and the United States) must find a way to defend our interests and our sovereignty, the rule of law and the proposition that issues like this are to be resolved peacefully and not by the threat of the use of force.” Josie de Leon School for the He warned: “There is a real danger of an incident blowing up and becoming a Performing Arts source of a much bigger conflict.” Dennis Blair, former commander of US forces in the Pacific, added: “We have to convince China that as it involves the rest of the region and the world in solving its problems, it has to play by the rules whether those rules are in business, Disney diplomacy or in military force.” Both men said they could not fully explain why China was now pressing its territorial claims. It could be a case of leaders manipulating nationalism, a mistaken assumption that the United States was withdrawing from Asia, or even the belief is a Smash Hit of some important Chinese figures that “China should run the world”, Slocombe Lara Capistrano plays Mulan in the Josie de Leon School for the Performing Arts production of Disney. -

It is a particular pleasure to return to Bristol following the very successful Research Students’ Conference three years ago. Once again we have had an overwhelming national and international response to the call for papers, compositions and presentations – a testament to the extraordinary range of music research being carried out today. The conference highlights the Edward J. Dent medal presentation and Lecture by Alejandro L. Madrid and the Peter Le Huray Lecture by Robert Adlington; and selected acoustic and electroacoustic compositions will be premiered by the Bristol Ensemble and the Bristol University Loudspeaker Orchestra. In addition there are the Annual General Meeting of the Association, a reception sponsored by Routledge, and an exhibition of books and other materials.
