Typical for a Dick story, Report raises some interesting questions about the ethical implications of untrammeled technology, and its dystopian view - not to mention the dense, thorny plot - represented something of an evolu- tion for a director and star whose early work is synonymous with the sunny Technicolor vistas of the big-budget ‘80s. long-after-the-fact sequel to a classic movie, only loosely based on the source material, helmed by a director who admitted to taking the project in order to secure financing for the movie he really wanted to make? Tyler, Tom. "Playing Like a Loser."
Playing like a Loser Tom Tyler In February 1985, on a rainy morning early in the wet season at Kakadu National Park in northern Australia, the environmental activist and philosopher Val Plumwood set out in a borrowed canoe into the swampy wetlands to search for an Aboriginal rock-art site. Plumwood had been warned by the park rangers to keep away from the main river channel in order to avoid the many saltwater crocodiles for whom the wetlands were home, but over the course of the day she was unable to locate the route to the rock paintings in the swamp’s maze of shallow channels and found herself much closer to the river than she had intended to be. Heading home, she encountered a crocodile who attacked her canoe. She tried to leap for the relative safety of a tree on the muddy river bank but was dragged into the water. Three times she was subjected to the crocodile’s infamous death roll as the predator attempted violently to drown her. Plumwood would write later, in her essay “Being Prey” (1996) and else- where, of the absurd thoughts and feelings she experienced during and immediately after the attack: the incredulous sense that this was a dream or nightmare from which she would soon awake, a feeling of indignation that this should be happening to her, a worry that friends might think she had been killed whilst chancing a swim, the thought that she would have T. In Memoriam 1942 – 2013 | ★ ★ ★ ★ ROGEREBERT.COM Choose a Section REVIEWS EDGE OF TOMORROW ★ ★ ★ ☇ | Matt Zoller Seitz June 6, 2014 | ☄ 104 "Edge of Tomorrow" is less of a time travel movie than an experience movie; that statement might not make sense now, but it probably will after you've seen it. Based on Hiroshi Sikurazaka's novel "All You Need is Kill", it's a true science fiction film, highly Print Page conceptual, set during the aftermath of an alien invasion. Maybe "extra-dimensional being invasion" is more accurate. The fierce, Like 501 octopod-looking beasties known as Mimics are controlled hive-mind style by a creature that seems able to peer through time, or 6 rupture it, or something. When the tale begins, we don't have exact answers about the enemy's powers (that's for our intrepid heroes to find out), but we have a solid hunch that it can see possible futures through the eyes of specific humans, then treat them Tweet 37 as, essentially, video game characters, following their progress through the nasty "adventure" of the war, and making note of their tactical maneuvers, the better to ensure our collective extermination. Tom Cruise, who seems to be spending his fifties saving humanity, plays Major William Cage, an Army public relations officer. Cage is a surprising choice for the role of hero. He's never seen combat yet inexplicably finds himself thrown into the middle of a ferocious battle that will decide the outcome of the war. The film begins with Cage en route to European command headquarters in London, waking up in the belly of a transport chopper. -

GLOBALIZATION AND THE EMERGENCE OF JAPANESE INFLUENCE IN AMERICAN POPULAR CULTURE By GINA CELESTE O’MELIA A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School-Newark Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Global Affairs Written under the direction of R. ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Globalization and the Emergence of Japanese Influence in American Popular Culture By Gina Celeste O’Melia Dissertation Director: Dr. R. Brian Ferguson The contemporary and prevailing theories that critique globalization often focus on a central concept of the United States having an exceptional and pivotal role in the mechanisms of globalization. However, while Hegemonic Imperialism scholarship focuses on the concept of the United States exporting its cultural wares in order to transform foreign cultures into a homogeneous one, the fact that the United States’ own popular culture is being transformed by globalization is often overlooked. As better predicted by theories outside of this hegemonic imperialistic lens, American popular culture has been and continues to be influenced by Japanese cultural products. This study sought to explore this influence through a series of approaches. The first was through a brief survey of the shared American-Japanese historical and media relationships. Saturday Morning cartoons were then analyzed through both a quantitative content analysis and qualitative genre based analysis from 1987-2012.
