That love has resurfaced with a new energy through Mexican rock band Mexrrissey, a team of musical gunslingers from Mexico’s hottest bands. The group has taken the greatest hits of iconic artists Morrissey and The Smiths and reinvented them with Mexican flare. For one-night-only, these hits will be performed at the Kimmel Center’s Merriam Theater, on October 29 at 8:00 p.m. as part of the Kimmel Center’s Philly ¡En Vivo! series. “It takes great talent to reimagine beloved songs from a new cultural perspective and Mexrrissey has found a knack for that ability,” said Ed Cambron, Executive Vice President of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “The group provides a vibrant new twist on these songs with Mexican embellishments that help us to appreciate the music in new ways. The perfect addition to our Philly ¡En Vivo! series!” Mexrrissey, comprised of stars from Mexico’s rock and pop worlds, are known for their brass and string interpretations of Morrissey’s iconic songs.

The glorious seven-piece band, representing the crème de la crème of Mexico’s music scene, reimagine classic songs of The Smiths and Morrissey entirely in Spanish, using vibrant Latin rhythms. At first glance, the association might seem surprising: songs from a country Morrissey himself bewails as “silent and grey” being sung by musicians from one of the world’s most famously vibrant places. However, Morrissey’s ardent Mexican fan base is a force to be reckoned with, and when you consider the drama, romance and poetry inherent in The Smiths’ outsider anthems, it makes perfect sense. Morrissey himself once said “Nothing the world holds could match the love waiting for me in Mexico City”. Mexrrissey was founded by DJ Camilo Lara, the founder of the pioneering electronic band Mexican Institute of Sound, a project that adapts traditional Mexican music with beats and synthesisers.

Sonic Negations: Sound, Affect, and Unbelonging Between Mexico and the United States By Iván Alejandro Ramos A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy In Performance Studies And the Designated Emphasis In Women, Gender, and Sexuality In the Graduate Division Of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in Charge: Professor Brandi Wilkins Catanese, Co-Chair Professor Juana María Rodríguez, Co-Chair Professor Abigail De Kosnik Professor Melinda Y. Chen Spring 2015 1 Abstract Sonic Negations: Sound, Affect, and Unbelonging Between Mexico and the United States By Iván Alejandro Ramos Doctor of Philosophy in Performance Studies And the Designated Emphasis in Women, Gender, and Sexuality University of California, Berkeley Professor Brandi Wilkins Catanese, Co-Chair Professor Juana María Rodríguez, Co-Chair This dissertation uses the concept of auditory cultures to trace how Mexican and U.S. Latina/o subjects use sound and music to articulate political dissent. “Sonic Negations: Sound, Affect, and Unbelonging Between Mexico and the United States” brings together the fields of performance and sound studies to show how the sonic presents a contested political arena through which transnational Latina/o artists, musicians and listening publics construct alternative sensory realms detached from national forms of belonging. I contend that non-culturally dependent forms of sound—noise, metal, punk, and 80s British music—allow individuals to approach negative affects, such as melancholia, despair, and idleness. Drawing from recent work in performance studies and queer theory on the political potentialities of negative affects, the study argues for the importance of attending to the political critiques inherent in auditory cultures and practices within both Latina/o and Latin American contexts.
