    Biographical Description for The HistoryMakers® Video Oral History with Harold Wheeler PERSON Wheeler, Harold Alternative Names: Harold Wheeler; William Harold Wheeler, Jr. Life Dates: July 14, 1943- Place of Birth: St. Louis, Missouri, USA Residence: Encino, CA Occupations: Music Composer; Music Producer Biographical Note Producer and composer Harold Wheeler was born William Harold Wheeler, Jr. on July 14, 1943 in St. Louis, Missouri to Roxetta McGee and William Harold Wheeler, Sr. At Antioch Baptist Church, where the members included Chuck Berry and Ike and Tina Turner, Wheeler played the piano for Sunday school at age five. Wheeler attended Turner Branch Elementary School and graduated from Sumner High School in 1960. He then attended Howard University, where he earned his B.A. degree in 1964. Wheeler earned his 1960. He then attended Howard University, where he earned his B.A. degree in 1964. Wheeler earned his M.A. degree in music from Manhattan School of Music in 1968. From 1968 to 1971, Wheeler worked as an assistant program director for CBS-FM Radio in New York. In 1971, Wheeler left CBS in order to compose his own music and coach other performers. That same year, composer Burt Bacharach hired Wheeler for his new musical Promises, Promises, making him the youngest conductor on Broadway. Wheeler was soon working with Michael Bennett composing dance music for A Chorus Line, going on to work with Bennett on Dreamgirls, Coco and SCANDAL. In 1971, Wheeler worked as musical director for Melvin Van Peeble’s groundbreaking musical Ain’t Supposed to Die a Natural Death, and for Don’t Play Us Cheap in 1972.

Having engineered the disco landscape of the seventies, Moroder brought electronic music to the mainstream with frequent collaborator Donna Summer and their anthemic hits ‘Love To Love You Baby’, ‘Hot Stuff’ and ‘I Feel Love’. As well as his title as godfather of dance, Moroder has composed some of the most recognizable film scores in cinema history, including The Never Ending Story, American Gigolo, Cat People, Superman III, Scarface, Rambo III, and Beverly Hills Cop II as well as hit soundtrack singles ‘Take My Breath Away’ by Berlin (Top Gun), ‘Flashdance’ by Irene Cara and ‘Call Me’ by Blondie (American Gigolo). His work for film has seen him win no less than three Academy Awards that sit proudly alongside his four Golden Globes, four Grammys and in 2004 was an inductee into the Dance Music Hall of Fame for his outstanding contribution to the music industry. As well as his own esteemed work as a solo artist Moroder has worked with a veritable who’s who of icons including Elton John, Cher, Janet Jackson, Freddy Mercury, David Bowie, Chaka Khan, Cheap Trick, and Pat Benatar.

SCHWARTZ* Many public companies have shed takeover defenses in recent years, on the theory that such defenses reduce share price. Yet new data presented here shows that practically all new public companies—those launching their initial public offering (IPO)—go public with powerful takeover defenses in place. This behav- ior is puzzling because the adoption of takeover defenses presumably lowers the price at which the pre-IPO shareholders can sell their own shares in and after the IPO. Why would founders and early investors engage in this seemingly counterproductive behavior? Building on prior attempts to solve this mystery, this Article claims that IPO firms adopt takeover defenses, at least in part, so that they can remain independent indefinitely and create corporate legacies that last for generations. Throughout human history, people have sought to overcome the human condition and achieve the only form of immortality reasonably available to us: a legacy that “lives on” after we are gone. Legacies can be established in count- less ways, including art (Leonardo da Vinci), literature (William Shakespeare), and athletics (Babe Ruth). The corporate form, though not previously recognized as such, can likewise serve as a vehicle for achieving an enduring legacy be- cause corporations are endowed by the law with “perpetual existence.” Publicly traded corporations in particular are well suited for this purpose, given the significant social and cultural role they play. Once a company goes public in an IPO, however, it suddenly becomes vulnerable to takeovers, which can end its corporate existence and thereby any hope of an enduring legacy.
