Page 01 www.greatayton.play-cricket.com A Warm Welcome From The President

The Great Ayton Cricket and Football Club is thriving and is an important element of the wellbeing of the Village Community. It’s a club which punches above its peers. You will read in other parts of the brochure of the activities of the sections of the club. I would like to take some time in talking about the largely unseen volunteers without whom the clubs activities would grind to a halt. Cricket is the most high profile in the clubs activities and also the activity which attracts the most non playing supporters to the ground, and the bar. The cricket requires liaison and organising with both the local league and the ECB. During the recent seasons this has been carried out by Norman Thurlow, with the support of Jon Grainge, Norman has also taken the responsibility of maintaining the cricket playing area in perfect condition and collecting donations for the payment of the umpires. Just as important as the Senior Teams is the Junior Section. The presence and development of the Junior section is important for both the club and encouragement to all local juniors. The section needs both organising and coaching. For this we thank Sarah Thorogood and Andy Readman plus his coaching assistants. Senior Football is a very important element of the Club’s activities. The time consuming complex activity of arranging and rearranging fixtures, liaison with the local league management plus the provision of clean kits each week and keeping the ground in first class condition is carried out by Keith Wilcox assisted by the Team Manager, Ritchie Davey and kit lady Marge Bellamy. By far the most vibrant section of the Club is that of the Junior Football Section, avery important contribution to the local community, this can be clearly seen by the vast numbers of Junior players, cars and parents on both Saturday and Sunday mornings, 140 registered junior members! This activity requires an enormous amount of time and effort to organise. We owe a great deal of thanks to Rob Lacy and his Junior coaching assistants. Above all is the overall management of the Club. The Grounds, the Club House, the Finances, Liaison with the many local offices. The Club Committee has the overall responsibility however in all respects the driving force is Keith Willcox, the Club would not be in the condition it is without his enormous enthusiasm and input. This I see as a major weakness in the Club, who follows ? Keith receives important support from the likes of Sandra Pearson, Club Treasurer who maintains the financial records, Denis Readman for the 200 competition, George Watt for amongst other things keeping the Club Machinery in working order, Norman Davidson for keeping the bar stocked and acting as a ground refuse collector and David Brown for being the Club’s main DIY contributor. George Hougham and John Mayfield who keep the football pitches cut. My and all of our thanks to ALL volunteers without whom the playing sections would cease to exist. Page 05 www.greatayton.play-cricket.com Great Ayton Cricket Club Background

The club was formed in 1921 and joined the West Cleveland League in the following year, 1922 being their first year of league cricket. In December 1934 the club was accepted into the and South Durham League B Division, the 2nd team staying in the West Leveland League. During the 1950/60s the club expanded with junior sections and a 3rd team being formed and therefore all club teams were playing in NYSD Divisions, the club withdrawing from the Cleveland and Teesside league after 47 years membership. In 1976 Great Ayton Cricket and Football Clubs amalgamated and a clubhouse erected. The 1960/70s brought success on the field of play with championship wins in the B Division in 1969 and 1972 and four years consecutive from 1976 to 1980 (no promotion in those days), the second team won the C Division in 1972 and 1978, and the club also had outstanding cup successes in that period. Many fine players graced those successful Ayton teams, with Gary Readman at the forefront and Ian Russell amassing more than 1000 . The late 1980s saw the club having to rethink and they appointed a junior coach (Keith Brett), with new practice nets and an all-weather installed, and a junior section formed with age groups from U11 to U17s. This move proved an outstanding success and through the development of home grown players the senior teams began to benefit. In 2003 the first team again won the league and a long awaited promotion to the Premier Division was gained, and then in 2006 the Premier title was won for the first time in the Club’s history with David Grainge the captain. Success followed success over the next decade, with all the major cups won, and in 2014 Great Ayton appeared in front of the Sky TV Cameras at Wantage Road, Northampton having qualified as one of the 4 finalists in the National Club T20, their passage to the finals coming courtesy of Northern Area and North of regional successes. The Premier Division title was won again in 2017, success achieved from the very last ball of the season, Jon Grainge skippering the team 11 years after his brother started the Premier ball rolling. During this period of cup and league glory English professional Chris Batchelor has reached the heights, and the lad has now scored over 10,000 runs for his adopted club. Alongside sustained playing success many ground improvements have been completed in recent years, including refurbishment and extensions to the dressing rooms and clubhouse, new practice nets and ground levelling all now completed , these were made possible by the unstinting work and support of club officials, members, sponsors, players, tea ladies and supporters. We look forward to the 2021 season. www.greatayton.play-cricket.com - Clubhouse : 01642 723 723 Page 06 Mission of The Great Ayton Club 2021

To provide sporting opportunities for residents of Great Ayton and the surrounding districts which will enable people to participate in recreational, coaching and competitive sport for all available ages, gender and ethnicity groups within the resources available to the club. The club is administrated by an elected committee and all members serve in a voluntary capacity. Elected trustees serve to oversee and protect the general well being of the club. The club grounds both cricket and football are leased from local land agents, parish council and a bequest from a prominent local family. The club is constituted and the affairs of the club are run by a general committee, cricket and football senior and junior committees. The club offers membership to social members and the constitution of the club is open and unrestricted.

www.greatayton.play-cricket.com - Clubhouse : 01642 723 723 Page 08 Stephen Pennock - All Rounder

Stephen has played over 300 Premier League games for our club. We asked him to put together his thoughts and playing experiences over the 20 or so years. His player stats are very good: (League & Cup) 490 Innings - 59 Not Outs - 9946 Runs - 210 Highest Score - At An Average of 25.76 6 x 100 and 49 x 50s. His score of 210 is the highest individual score ever by amateur in the NYSD BOWLING (League & Cup) Overs Bowled 1808 - 216 Maidens - 7558 Runs - 378 wickets - Average 19.99 - Best 5/13. Stephen writes: During 2020 season I was informed that I had made my 300th Premier League appearance for Great Ayton. After playing Junior Cricket at the club then senior cricket at a young age and as Great Ayton were at the time a Division 1 team I took the decision at 17 years old to go and play for, at the time the NYSD powerhouse team Guisborough. At the time Guisborough were a big club with top players who were getting old and they needed some new young blood and at the time aged 17 I was given the chance to go and play at top level in a team that did well in national cups, so I made the move. After 3 seasons, lots of team success, 2 NYSD Championships and Kerridge and McMillan Cup wins the time was right to return to Great Ayton. On my return skipper David Grainge had a vision of how he wished the team to play their cricket and saw that with a top professional and some new faces the club could be up there challenging with the big boys. Come the 2006 season and the signing of Riaz ( A test player) our club won the NYSD Premier League with good all round contributions all season from the team players. Over the years from the initial Premier League title the club has gone on to break record after record, playing on Sky Sports from Wantage Road County Ground Northampton on National Finals Day, many Cup successes and the League title again in 2017. Personally I’ve played my part, lots of things to be proud of and some not so proud of!!. I am now 37 years old at the start of the 2021 season and I am just not sure how many more seasons there will be, but hopefully many. The group of players we have now are a decent mix of young and older players with things looking positive for the future. The NYSD League has changed so much over my last 18 seasons when playing in the top flight but one of the biggest things for me is that I stayed loyal to Great Ayton and not gone and taken financial offers from other clubs. Here is to the most successful NYSD Club over the past 20 years and long may that continue. I finish with my personal choice of the best eleven players over my playing career to date: Chris Batchelor (English Pro), Sam Moylan (Overseas Amateur), Chris Allinson, Phil Holdsworth, Whald Ghuari, Riaz Afridi (Overseas Pro), Stephen Pennock, Lewis Harper, David Grainge (Captain), Jon Grainge (Wicketkeeper), Joe Marsay and 12th man John Doyle. My thanks and regards to all for your support. Stephen Page 09 www.greatayton.play-cricket.com Great Ayton Cricket Club - Thank You

Great Ayton Cricket Club - Juniors

The Junior Section continued to grow in 2020 which given the challenges of COVID was a great effort by all at the club. Winter training kicked off in January for the younger contingent (U9 to U12s) at Stokesley Leisure Centre and the older sections (U13 to U17s) had winter Net sessions at Saltburn. The pre-season training was well attended until the ‘lock-down’ kicked in, and it provided an excellent foundation for the Juniors and meant they were raring to go for the summer albeit one that was curtailed by events. A number from our Junior section were put forward for the Cleveland and the Yorkshire Pathway Programmes with Charlie Doyle (U15) , Ed Fawcett (U14) AND Alex Davis (U10) successful in being selected. When the season started in June attendance at training was excellent from the off and the introduction of the new net facilities was central to the quality of the practices that could be organised. The U11, U13, U15 and U17 teams played regularly through the season with matches con- tinuing until late September. The number of Juniors wanting to play competitive cricket for the club continues to climb and we hope to continue this trend in 2021. We are very proud to now have 5 members in the North Yorkshire & South Durham Cricket League Hall of Fame: CHRIS ALLINSON (Outstanding Player) - Chris was an outstanding cricketing talent who sadly passed away in 2018 at the tender age of 28. From his early days at Guisborough, and with the Cleveland Schools representative sides, it seemed inevitable he was destined for greater things and indeed his talent was soon to earn him a place in Yorkshire’s Academy side. His progress was rapid. By the age of 17 he was playing for England under 19’s alongside talents such as James Taylor and Chris Woakes, and hit a century for his country. He had some highs in Yorkshire’s second string, notably in his debut game for the second team against Somerset when he hit 199 runs in the match, which included another century. Chris enjoyed professional stints with a number of clubs in the NYSD League, so highly were his services valued. During his various spells with Guisborough, Marske, Stokesley, Great Ayton and Marton he accumulated over 6,500 Premier Division runs and took 277 wickets. In all cricket he will undoubtedly have scored well over 10,000 runs—how many more would have scored in his career if his innings had not been so tragically cut short? He performed at the top level for more than a decade, and during that time he featured heavily in NYSD League representative successes—whenever there was an inter-league game scheduled he was always first to want to play, and he enjoyed many memorable games. Notably, when still just 18, he played in the famous ground breaking national success of 2008 when the NYSD became the first and only non-ECB Premier League ever to lift the Presidents Trophy, playing an important part as Nottinghamshire were defeated in the final. He was enduringly personable, an outgoing and likeable character and a great lad to talk about the game with. On the field he was, as his talent might suggest, a tremendous competitor, who demanded excellence from his teammates as well as himself … he was not a great lover of the lbw rule … unless he was bowling of course. The abiding memory of Chris was that he lived for cricket - simply, he had an insatiable appetite for the game both on and off the field.

IAN RUSSELL (Outstanding Player) - Ian began his cricketing life at Great Ayton in the juniors, graduating to the first team at an early age. Throughout the 1970’s he regularly took 50 to 60 league wickets per season, and was the principal spearhead behind the Club’s outstanding successes of that decade when they won the then B Division championship in four consecutive seasons from 1977 to 1980. During this period Ian returned his personal best match figures of 10 wickets for 9 runs against Stockton, although one interesting aside is that the umpire at his end during this remarkable performance was Roscoe Butler who was a great admirer of Ian! The number of lbw’s is not detailed. In the early 1980’s Ian moved to near neighbours Guisborough and quickly became one of the leading bowlers in the A Division, helping the club to a couple of championship successes as well back to back Kerridge Cup wins. During his spell at Fountain’s Garth the world famous Desmond Haynes was the professional for a period, and he singled Ian out as one of the best amateur bowlers who he had played with or against. Ian returned to Great Ayton in the 1990’s, latterly finishing his career in the second and third teams, but by which time he had amassed around 1500 wickets at an impressively low average. Ian was also a more than capable batsman and outstanding slip fielder, but it was his bowling that set him apart as one of the leading NYSD bowlers of his generation. www.greatayton.play-cricket.com - Clubhouse : 01642 723 723 Page 16 NYSDL Hall of Fame Members

CHRIS BATCHELOR (Outstanding Player) - Chris Batchelor joined Great Ayton as a replacement professional for an injured Darren Hickey in 2006. It was to prove a dramatic start to his career with the Villagers as his first six games for the club in that memorable season saw Ayton claim the Premier Division championship for the first time in their history. And this was just the start of a tremendous period of team success, built on the back of Chris’ run scoring abilities. Now in his 14th season with the Club, the domestic trophy ‘count’ during his tenure as English professional is 2 Premier titles, 4 Macmillan Cups, 4 NYSD Fifteens Premier wins and a Kerridge Cup – a clean sweep of the four Premier honours which few players can claim on their CV. In the 12 full seasons that Chris has played he has scored 1,000 + runs in nine of those…and in the other three campaigns his lowest aggregate was 853! This prolific run scoring sees him as far and away Ayton’s leading scorer in top flight cricket with, at 4.8.19, 14,556 scored at an average of more than 40, this total including 21 centuries and 101 fifties. Also recognised as one of the very best fielders in the NYSD he has taken 150 catches, and added to that are 189 wickets at a very respectable of 21.73. Chris’ highest score came at Marske in 2012 when he made 156 . He obviously likes the Windy Hill Lane ground as it was there, in 2010, he recorded the highest ever individual score in national inter-league cricket when he smashed the NEPL attack, which included Andrew Tye, for a pulsating 185 (119 balls, 24 fours and 9 sixes). Two years prior to this Chris captained the League’s White Rose team to trophy winning success in the final against the Bradford League and became an integral part of successful League teams in that era. It is rare to see a club professional stay loyal to one team for such a long period of time, and it is testament to his outlook on playing cricket as much for the enjoyment of the game itself as for the rewards it can bring.

GARY READMAN (Lifetime Achievement) - Gary made his playing debut for Great Ayton in 1958 when the under 17’s were a ‘man’ short (his dad ran the team), and he started playing regularly at the age of 13 in 1961. The rest, as they say, is history. Gary played up until his retirement in 1996 – a total of 35 years during which he scored in excess of 20,000 runs – this is only an estimate as the records for the 11 early years from 1963 to 1971 are missing, but a factual total of 17,581 from 1972 onwards tells its own story. His run scoring feats including 3 seasons in which he scored over 1,000 runs – 1981, 1988 and 1991 – and he closed his career with 13 league centuries to his name, his highest score being 113 against in 1989. He claimed 3 NYSD league awards – the B Division fielding medal in 1975 and the batting averages in 1976 and 1988. He took over the captaincy of the first team in 1976 and held the role for 20 years, and therefore led the renowned Great Ayton team who won the B Division championship in four consecutive seasons from 1977 to 1980. Notwithstanding his abilities as a player Gary also contributed to club life in a tremendous way. He was very active on the Club committee for over 35 years, was part of the team that organised the levelling of the outfield, setting up the clubhouse, building the new scorebox and cricket nets. His wife Michelle made teas for over 30 years. During his time on the committee he organised a ‘100 Club’ and ran it for 32 years during which it raised over £19,000, and also organised the Club’s annual dinner and awards evening for 33 years.

NORMAN THURLOW (Lifetime Achievement) - Norman arrived in Great Ayton from Fryup (where his nickname was ‘Rabbit’) in 1978, since when he has become something of a legend – indeed, when the first team pulled off the remarkable feat of winning the Premier Division championship in 2006 such was his stature he even made the Daily Telegraph. Norman’s enthusiasm to see his club prosper has manifested itself in numerous forms over the years – secretary, treasurer, groundsman, event organiser….whatever you want to mention he’s done it, and there is little doubt that the remarkable things a small village club like Ayton have achieved over the last decade or so have a lot to do with the work this man has done behind the scenes. For the past umpteen years those visiting Leven Park have witnessed the ‘Silver Fox’ – he graduated from being a rabbit – cutting grass, sweeping dressing rooms, rolling wickets, mending covers…..and much much more. Has captained all club teams at various times (and last turned out in 2014 at the age of 78), he was a league umpire from 1988 to 2011, and served on the League Management Committee for some 20 years.
