1. The Fredericton Arts Alliance Artist in Residence Program 2015

A collaborative music project this week in the Barracks. Continuing from last week until July 19 musicians and artists Natalie Sappier and Nate Miller are joining forces to create music as the Artists in Residence for the Fredericton Arts Alliance in the Soldiers’ Barracks.

Natalie Sappier specializes in Aboriginal symbolism and storytelling of the Wolastoq and Maliseet People of New Brunswick.

Nate Miller is a professional drummer, who has been involved in underground music scenes across Canada. He promotes and leads spiritual drumming events and teaches hand drumming. In 2007 he founded his own production company, Emanate 7.

Miller will be recording the collaboration, and playing percussion. Sappier will be combining Aboriginal chanting with a dialog of sound and voice. Working collaboratively will be a new experience for them, and they are encouraging feedback from visitors, as part of their creative process.

The Artists in Residence program continues throughout the summer, with two artists sharing the space for a week at a time. While there, they are prepared to demonstrate their work, their tools and techniques and talk about the things that inspire their creations. The studio is open 10am to 5pm, Monday through Saturday and noon to 5pm on Sunday.

It’s the fourteenth year for the FAA program, which receives support from the city of Fredericton, Downtown Fredericton. For more information, please visit www.frederictonartsalliance.ca. Back to top

4. Hannah’s Tea Place is Becoming a Family Affair

The Fredericton Region Museum is excited to announce the launch of the 5th annual Hannah’s Tea Place – but this year there’s a twist! Since Hannah is out of town for the summer visiting her aunt, her father will be looking after the Tea Place. Join Benjamin Ingraham at the Officers’ Quarters for an afternoon of irresistible iced tea, scrumptious snickerdoodle cookies, and engaging tales of life as a Loyalist in Ste. Anne’s Point. If you’re feeling crafty, you can even try your hand at rug hooking, one of Benjamin’s favourite pass times. Hannah’s dad will be at the Museum all summer long, and would love to have you drop by to enjoy some tasty treats, unique crafts, and stories about the life of a New Brunswick Loyalist.

Hannah’s Tea Place runs every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoon from 1-4pm for the months of July and August. You can find Benjamin upstairs on the balcony of the Fredericton Region Museum, located at 571 Queen Street on the edge of Officers’ Square. As part of a community social project, all of Benjamin’s rug hooking projects will be donated to the Greener Village Community Food Centre. Any donations of yarn or burlap would be much appreciated (contact us at 455-6041).

Shannex Parkland Fredericton is showing the comedy film The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed out the Window and Disappeared on July 9 at 2pm in the Carleton Theatre Governor Hall.

After a long and colorful life working in munitions and getting entangled in the Spanish Civil War, the Manhattan Project, and other definitive events of the 20th Century, Allan Karlsson finds himself stuck in a nursing home. Determined to escape on his 100th birthday, he leaps out of a window and onto the nearest bus, kicking off an unexpected journey involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash, some wicked criminals, and an elephant named Sonya. Like an unruly Nordic cousin of Forrest Gump, Allan’s youthful escapades and current adventures weave together into an offbeat treat for anyone who’s young at heart. Starring beloved comedian Robert Gustafsson, this fanciful spin on world history is based on a best-selling novel and is also the highest-grossing Swedish film of all time.

9. Fredericton Botanic Garden Association presents the Annual Treasured Garden Tour Jul 12

The Fredericton Botanic Garden Association is pleased to announce the return of its annual Treasured Garden Tour. Post-tropical storm Arthur prevented the tour from going ahead last year but we are looking forward to its return this year. The tour will take place on Sunday afternoon, July 12. This year five Southside gardens will be showcased each featuring their own on-site visual artist and musician.

The gardens are very different and range from two beautifully designed downtown gardens, to an estate garden located in the centre of the Fredericton golf course (surrounded by fairways), and a wonderful garden in New Maryland that boasts a zen garden, water features and streams, a forest garden and more.

Visitors will be able to delight in the full summer scents and beauty behind the garden gates while at the same time watching a painting unfold followed by a tour and garden party at the Fredericton Botanic Garden. Guests should plan to spend a full afternoon appreciating the loving touches each gardener uses to enhance their garden; then enjoy the remainder of the day sipping rhubarb punch and nibbling sweet treats while Stephen Peacock performs on classical guitar.

We are also launching a new art auction of donated works created in the gardens alongside works donated by various local artists including Kris Leblanc, Peggy Holt, Brigid Toole Grant, and Lynda Rae Burke. This annual event serves as a fundraiser for the Association as well as providing a way to introduce new visitors to the Fredericton Botanic Garden. Past visitors of the Garden get to see what’s new and how the Garden is continuing to expand. ARTSnews July 9, 2015 5 Volume 16, Issue 27

13. Cineplex’s National Theatre Live presents Everyman Jul 16

BAFTA winner and Academy Award® nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) takes the title role in this dynamic new production of one of English drama’s oldest plays, directed by the National Theatre’s new Director Rufus Norris (Broken, London Road).

He is forced to abandon the life he has built and embark on a last, frantic search to recruit a friend, anyone, to speak in his defence. But Death is close behind, and time is running out. One of the great primal, spiritual myths, Everyman asks whether it is only in death that we can understand our lives.
