or the winningest program in City Section history the bar is always high. A championship is the goal every year for the Palisades High Fgirls volleyball team, but the Dolphins enter this season as underdogs after losing nine of their best players to graduation. Having guided Palisades to the finals in four of his first five seasons, head coach Carlos Gray believes that to reach the pinnacle again his squad must improve by leaps and bounds over the next three months. “The City favorites are Taft and Granada Hills and right now I’d also put Chatsworth and Carson ahead of us,” Gray said. “I’ve had to put Annie Eckert at outside hitter and she was supposed to be our libero We don’t have anyone returning at middle hitter and Keely McMahon has to be a 5-1 setter. We’re going to have to work our tails off.” How far the Dolphins go could hinge on the return of reigning City Player of the Year Alex Laita, who has been battling knee and shin is- sues suffered during her club season with Sunshine Volleyball. “I’m so excited... I think this team has lots of potential,” said Mc- Mahon, who partnered with Eckert on Pali High’s beach team in the spring. “I do think playing beach helps for indoor and setter is like be- ing the quarterback because you touch the ball every play. We had such a good team last year that there was a lot of built-in competition. I was doing everything I could to earn playing time and now that I’m a senior it’s paying off. We were in a similar situation my sophomore year when a lot of players graduated so it’s happened before.” Backing up McMahon will be freshman Kaia Kanan, junior Elena Kilowski and junior Ally Bierschenk, who will also play opposite. Back- ing up Eckert at libero will be juniors Michal Weinberg and Bridgtte Lloyd. Senior Annie Wibblesman will play middle blocker alongside sophomore Alexa Hogan. Senior Caroline Kedeshian will play opposite and hitters will include juniors Ashtyn Evans and Sydney Conway and 12th-grader Danica Yeh. “Defense is my strongpoint but hitting is really fun for me,” said Eckert, who plays libero on her Active club. “It’s a big change but I’m enjoying it and I’m trying to get more consistent. Coach told me during tryouts that he might need me to change positions. Alex is an amazing hitter and it’s always good to have her feedback. I started playing beach to stay in shape but it’s made me into an all-around better player.” Palisades opens the season with home matches against Eagle Rock and El Camino Real next Tuesday and Thursday. The nonleague slate also includes Carson and the Dolphins are entered in all three City tour- naments: Venice, Chastworth and Sylmar. More than a century ago, the Pacific Palisades began to undergo a transformation from undeveloped open fields into a vibrant family community. In 1922, Reverend Charles Scott bought the Pacific Palisades and three years later over 100 homes had been built. In these days, real estate prices ranged from $2,000- $3,000. $3,000 would buy you a palace.

Although that was before my time, my great-grandfather, Herman Michel, a Swiss immigrant, worked in the Palisades,

Herman Michel was an example of hard work, dedication, and great vision. From humble beginnings, he became a successful businessman and was eventually elected mayor of Santa Monica. As his great-grandson, I approach my work with the same dedication, energy, and enthusiasm. Most recently, I was presented with an award from the National Association of Realtors as one of America’s Top Agents. Milkman in front of an Edgemar Farms delivery truck in Pacific Palisades, California, 1938. Real estate values have changed dramatically. What was once a $3,000 palace may be a $10,000,000 home. Although prices have changed, much remains the same - our spectacular location, near-perfect weather, and a fourth generation resident who continues to value hard work, personal service, and a commitment to our neighborhood.
