ZooNotes 47: 1-5 (2013) …47… www.zoonotes.bio.uni-plovdiv.bg ISSN 1313-9916 Contribution to the butterfly species of Belasitsa Mountain (SW Bulgaria) and second record of Gonepteryx cleopatra (Linnaeus, 1767) from Bulgaria LYUBEN DOMOZETSKI [email protected] Abstract. At present, according to the literature data for Belasitsa Mountain are published 139 butterfly species. This article contributes to the knowleage of the butterfly fauna of the mountain by adding five more species. With this supplement the number of the butterflies’ fauna of Belasitsa Mountain increase to 144 species. This article also presents information about the second record of Gonepteryx cleopatra (Linnaeus, 1767) in Bulgaria. Key words: Belasitsa Mountain, Alibotoush Mountain, Rupite locality, Gonepteryx cleopatra, butterblies, faunistic data. Introduction Belasitsa Mountain is a mountain range in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula. Currently the southern slope of the mountain belongs to the territory of Greece, the southwestern slope to Republic of Macedonia and the southeastern slope – to Bulgaria. The considerable displacement, the specific geographical location and the distinctive climate are the main reasons which determine the diverse butterflies’ fauna of Belasitsa Mt. Unlike any other borderline areas (for example the Vlahina Mountain), the butterflies of Belasitsa Mt. are studied very well. Material and methods The current report presents a summary of the published faunistic data of butterfly taxa inhabiting the Bulgarian section of Belasitsa Mt. (Fig. 1). In addition, 5 species, not registered before in Belasitsa Mt. are reported here with locations, data of records, number and sex of specimens. Short faunistic analysis is made based on the comparison between the butterflies of Belasitsa Mt.

KNOWLEDGE – International Journal Vol.38.5 RURAL YOUTH CIVIC ENGAGEMENT: A CASE STUDY IN THE MUNICIPALITIES OF PETRICH AND SANDANSKI (REPUBLIC OF BULGARIA) Petrana Stoykova South-West University „Neofit Rilski” – Blagoevgrad, Republic of Bulgaria [email protected] Abstract: Data from the official censuses in Bulgaria over the last 110 years clearly show the dynamic change towards urbanization (as a continuous process of increasing the number, the role and the size of cities) in the country. According to Eurostat data as of 2018, a steady tendency of rural areas depopulation and migration of citizens to the major cities is observed in Bulgaria. The Bulgarian village has to deal with a large number of difficulties. They are a particular challenge for the rural youth. The civic engagement of young people is one of the main prerequisites for overcoming some of the most important problems in the village and its longer life. The analysis of the civic engagement among rural youth is made on the basis of a non-representative quantitative survey entitled „Village life and challenges facing young people“. This research was conducted within the framework of the project „We, the young people can do“, performed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the NGO „BECAUSE WE CAN“. The object of the study are the young people between the ages of 15 and 29, whose permanent residence is in one of the villages in the municipalities of Petrich and Sandanski. The sample consists of 98 people and the period of the field survey is dated from 01.12.2019 to 22.12.2019.

Originalveröffentlichung in: The lower Strumešnica valley in prehistoric, ancient and early medieval times, Kraków 1983, S. 75-91 Janusz A. Ostrowski THE LOWER STRULIESNICA VALLEY DURING THE ROMAN PERIOD' AND IN THE LATE ANTIQUITY * Polish-Bulgarian surface and trial investigations in south-western Bulgaria, on the lower StrumeSnica (the ancient Doberus') allow us to make a preliminary estimation of the distribution and character of set tlement in this area in ancient times, and consequently enable the role played by the river valley in ancient times to be specified. These in vestigations have confirmed the previous hypotheses of numerous scholars2 as to the importance of one of the three natural routes running along the parallel of latitude, and connecting the valley of the Axius (now Vardor) with the valley of the Strymon (now Struma)3. Complex investigations on the territory bounded on west by the Bul- garian-Yugoslavi8n frontier, on the south by the northern slopes of the Belasica Mts. (the Bulgarian-Greek frontier runs along the peaks), on the east by the Struma valley and on the north by the southern slopes of the OgraSden - a practically unknown area constituting ipso facto a "terra incognita" in Bulgarian archaeology - introduce many essential elements into the problems connected with the history of this region from prehistoric times up to the period of Turkish rule. The conclusions which may so far be drawn from the investigations are still very gener al, though of sufficient importance to- deserve a short rdsumd, although only a preliminary exploration of the area has been made. Eefore the results of the investigations on the settlement from the Roman and.

Wine with personality Identity The idea to create Orbelus was born during a vivid discus- sion on the deserted vineyards in the Struma river valley that we, two families of friends, had at the end of the 1990s. Gradually the idea started taking shape and the more we discussed it, the more we knew that it is something worth pursuing. We wanted to show thе character and our un- derstanding of the Struma river valley and its unique grape variety – the Melnik grape. From that point onward our path was clear. For some years we selected lands, accumulated knowledge and ad- vice from local winegrowers – who are now part of the Orbelus family. In 2006 we planted the first vines, in 2009 we presented our first vintage of Orbelus wines, and in 2014 the winery – the “home” of Orbelus – opened its doors. For us biological winegrowing has been the natural path since the beginning. Our understanding is that we can only truly reveal the identity of a region and its fruits when work- ing in harmony with nature and preserving the land that we will leave to generations to come. This path leads us to today: Orbelus is the first certified organic winery in Bulgaria (and we are happy to say that it is no longer the only one!). All of us, parents, friends and also our grown up children take part in and stand behind the Orbelus wines – from the vineyard to the bottle! 1 Terroir and vineyards The vineyards of Orbelus are situated in one of the most Southern parts of Bulgaria, the East bank of the Struma river, in the territory of four villages – Kromidovo, Kapato- vo, Harsovo and Marikostinovo.
