I was four years old when my uncle, Jack Henderson, the program director of 50,000 watt KCUL-AM in Fort Worth/Dallas, came to visit my family in 1959. He brought me around one hundred and fifty 45 RPM records from his station (duplicate copies that they no longer needed) and a small record player that played only 45s (not albums). I played those records day and night, completely wore them out. From that point, I wanted to be a disc jockey. But instead of going for the usual “comedic” approach most DJs took, I tried to be more informative by dropping in tidbits of a song’s background, something that always fascinated me. Originally with my “Classic Country Music Stories” site on Facebook (which is still going strong), and now with this book, I can tell the whole story, something that time restraints on radio wouldn’t allow. I began deejaying as a career at the age of sixteen in 1971, most notably at Nashville’s WENO-AM and WKDA- AM, Lakeland, Florida’s WPCV-FM (past winner of the “Radio Station of the Year” award from the Country Music Association), and Springfield, Missouri’s KTTS AM & FM and KWTO-AM, but with syndication and automation which overwhelmed radio some twenty-five years ago, my final DJ position ended in 1992.

WHEREAS, the members of this General Assembly were saddened to learn of the passing of Reggie Young of Nashville, a humble gentleman whose talents as a guitarist were incomparable among his peers yet accessible to the average listener; and WHEREAS, during a brilliant career that spanned seven decades, Reggie Young served as the anchor of house bands at Memphis's Royal Studios/Hi Records and American Studios and was later one of Nashville's finest session players; and WHEREAS, greatly revered among his peers, Reggie Young was not a household name, but his signature work on guitar and sitar continues to be heard and appreciated worldwide; and WHEREAS, his talents earned him engagements with a stunning array of artists, from Bob Dylan to Gladys Knight, the Staple Singers to Paul Simon, Herbie Mann to Joe Cocker, and B.B. Nå var ikke Chips Moman noen hvem som helst. Med tidlig studioet i hjembyen, og i anledning 50-års-markeringen slippes musikerbakgrunn fra Johnny Burnette og Gene Vincent hadde han nå «American Sound 1969», en samling med fem CD’er fra disse tatt skrittet videre til å bli låtskriver og musiker for bl.a. selveste dagene, før strykere, blåsere, korister og andre gjorde sine pålegg.

    Profile: Gabriel Kelley ‘If you want something done right, do it yourself.’ That line of advice tends to get stated with a lot more frequency than it’s actually followed. In Gabriel Kelley’s case, though, it’s something he’s never needed to think about: It’s the way he’s always done things. The talented 27-year-old raised most of the funds for his debut album with a Kickstarter campaign, but his manner of conducting his life and music runs deeper. The saga of how IT DON’T COME EASY came to be is one of steadfast determination and self-sufficiency and a commitment to doing the right thing—often against challenging odds. And, as Kelley himself notes, there’s a corollary: Even when the creative process isn’t a walk in the park, it’s worth the effort when the work is honest. And it is. IT DON’T COME EASY is an uncompromising and heartfelt debut that, if it requires a category, would fit comfortably under “singer-songwriter.” In the best sense of that tradition, it doesn’t trifle with extraneous anythings: no wasted lines or unnecessary instrumental flourishes, just a communal effort from Kelley and his fellow musicians to, as he puts it, “serve the songs.” The album was a long time coming—Kelley reckons “I waited six years to make my first album”—largely because its ten songs express a pretty expansive range of life experience. That includes a rural, working-class boyhood in Georgia, a total-immersion living-abroad adolescence and an early adulthood spent—and subsequently walked away from—as a professional songwriter on Nashville’s Music Row.
