Development of Chambal River for River Cruise (upstream of Kota Barrage & Upstream of Jawahar Sagar Dam) 6th Jan’ 2021 20th July 2020 Inland Waterways Authority of India Inland Waterways Authority of India(IWAI) Ministry of Shipping, Govt. of India NW 24 – An introduction The 960 km long Chambal River originates from the Singar Chouri Peak on the northern slopes of the Vindhyan escarpment, 15 kms West-South-West of Mhow in Indore District in Madhya Pradesh NAME Chambal River NATIONAL WATERWAY National Waterway - 24 LENGTH 60.86 km from Chakarpura to Awari STATE Uttar Pradesh Backwater area of Kota Barrage, Kota Kota Barrage Backwater area of Jawahar Sagar Dam, Kota Jawahar Sagar Dam Kota Barrage Garadiya Mahadev Temple Hanging Bridge (14 km) (5 km) Chambal Boat Safari (28 km) Chambal Garden (3 km) City Palace (1 km) Gopernath Tample (22 km) Jawahar Sagar Dam (27 km) Chambal river a tributary of Yamuna river flows through Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh and its total length is 960 km • MP - 346 km • Raj - 225 km • MP & Rajasthan(border) - 217 km • UP - 32 km • UP & MP (border) - 140 km Perennial river on the south of Vindhya Hydrographic survey of only 60 km in UP from Chakarpura to Awari (river Yamuna joining point) was conducted and declared as National Waterway -24 (NW-24) Govt. of MP and Rajasthan did not permitted to conduct the hydrographic survey Observations (1/2) The field visit was conducted in the month of Feb’ 20 of the Kota Barrage upstream upto about 20 km from Dam pond to Garadia Mahadev Temple site by mechanized boat and partially by road. A visit to Jawahar Sagar Dam was also conducted. The following were observed by the visiting team: - • Complete stretch of 20 km u/s of Kota Barrage is covered under National Chambal sanctuary under Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. • Both area is protected under Mukundra National Park and Tiger Reserve (MNPR) • More than 5m water depth is available round the year in the stretch Observations (2/2) • Under Rajasthan Regulation of Boat Act, 1957 tourist boats are being operated • Boat registration, survey and licensing etc. is under Transport Department, Govt. of Rajasthan • Both the bank of river stretch are rocky vertical banks with 10m to 15m high • No proper berthing platform with approach found in the stretch for safe embarkment & disembarkment • Local cruise vessel operators are interested subject to necessary clearances/ permissions by Govt. of Rajasthan Findings (1/2) On the basis of joint site visit and discussion with the State Govt. (Kota Administration officers including the cruise vessel operators) the findings are : - • Navigational water depth is 4m to 10m in both pondage (backwater) area i.e. Kota barrage and Jawahar Sagar dam. • Necessary environment / regulatory clearances / permissions from concerned State Govt. may take obtained. Findings (2/2) • IWAI may arrange necessary training to the vessel operators including vessel crew at National Inland Navigational Institute (NINI) in Patna. • The Vessels can be registered at any State Govt. IWT directorate. • Govt. of Rajasthan may establish a IWT directorate under Inland Vessel Act, 1917. • On design and construction of suitable floating jetties with identification of location, IWAI may provide necessary technical assistance Glimpse of the Site Visit held on 14th & 15th February, 2020 • A Webinar on stakeholder’s conference on 06.01.2021 at 1100 hrs. • Role of IWAI is limited to facilitation survey & support in navigation. • Role of State Govt. is crucial in supporting Tourism. • River Cruise Tourism policy is also being promoted by Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India.
